OSR Module Redux - EX1 Dungeonland (1e) By Gary Gygax For Old School Campaign Use

"As adventurers, you may think you have seen everything: certainly your skills have brought you through unimaginable dangers. But now you suddenly find yourself in a place unlike any through which you have traveled: astounding, dangerous, and even amusing things confront you as you journey, both indoors and outdoors, through unique and wondrous realm of Dungeonland. "

Let's get the basics out of the way right off the bat & use the EX1 Dungeonland Wiki entry to get the very basics of the module out of the way; "Dungeonland (EX1) is an adventure module for the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) roleplaying game, written by Gary Gygax for use with the First Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) rules. It is an adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, with the various characters from the book translated into AD&D terms" Personally I think its one of Gary Gygax's more inventive & interesting modules.

Hoping everyone had a brilliant Christmas holiday or whatever your celebrating. I've been doing a lot of thinking about demi planes or specifically those associated with EX1 & EX2 for Dungeons & Dragons. EX1 Dungeonland by Gary Gygax is intimately tied in with Castle Greyhawk. It has a reputation for both deadliness & a sense of whimsy. But this is one of those module series with a quietly underlying fairytale madness to both modules laced with lots of Gary Gygax's warped sense of humor.  But its the idea that both EX1 "Dungeonland" & EX2: "The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror" exist as both mini campaign & as demi planes tied to Castle Greyhawk. But where else are these module's tied to?! This question came up over the Christmas holiday speaking with friends. Reading through the EX1 Dungeonland product description on Drivethru rpg we get a solid history of the module's background in Gary Gygax's home game ( maybe it seems that there are some doubts about this but let's go with it. Read the comments section the module's Drivethrurpg entry.); "About Castle Greyhawk. Gary Gygax probably created Castle Greyhawk in late 1972, taking the idea of exploring dungeons beneath a castle from Dave Arneson's own Castle Blackmoor. Castle Greyhawk was thus perhaps the first actual D&D adventure location - which makes it all the more surprising that in the decade afterward, Gygax never produced a Castle Greyhawk supplement for TSR.

He offered hints of Castle Greyhawk's contents as early as Supplement I: Greyhawk (1975), when he mentioned the dungeon's "living room" and the fact that the dungeons contained a fountain of endless snakes. However, it wasn't until Gygax produced the World of Greyhawk Folio (1980) that he finally committed to detailing D&D's primordial dungeon, saying in The Dragon #35 (March 1980) that he was now hoping to produce "a huge map of the City of Greyhawk, modules based on the original Castle Greyhawk, and a series of offerings which depict the Elemental Planes of Greyhawk."

None of those ever come about. However, before he was forced to leave TSR, Gygax did manage to produce three adventures based on "demiplanes" - which were strange places that you could get to from Castle Greyhawk. EX1: "Dungeonland" (1983) and EX2: "The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror"(1983) detailed the first of them."

So the official Castle Greyhawk is dust & rubble in the worlds of TSR. But I'm not at all concerned about that instead I'm more interested in what happens to the demi plane of Dungeonland. We know that Mystara & Blackmoor have adventure elements of "Alice in Wonderland"  & Edgar Allen Poe in their background. The fact that both of these worlds might be connected to the demi plane of dreams is out there floating on the internet. Be damned if I can find it this morning but its out there.

What if Dungeonland got a bit more aggressive? What if this dreamland wanted out & got a bit greedy for its own sense of self preservation. After all the barrel entrance to the realm was destroyed in Castle Greyhawk. If the realm of Dungeonland was a subrealm of Fairy or Fairyland then its quirky & deadliness makes a whole lot of sense. This is right in line with some of the themes of Edgar Allen Poe & even Clark Ashton Smith. The idea of the decaying dream realm becoming parasitic.
"By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named Night,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly
From an ultimate dim Thule—
From a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime,
Out of Space—out of Time.
Bottomless vales and boundless floods,
And chasms, and caves, and Titan woods,
With forms that no man can discover
For the dews that drip all over;
Mountains toppling evermore
Into seas without a shore;
Seas that restlessly aspire,
Surging, unto skies of fire;
Lakes that endlessly outspread
Their lone waters—lone and dead,—
Their still waters—still and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily.
By the lakes that thus outspread
Their lone waters, lone and dead,—
Their sad waters, sad and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily,—
By the mountains—near the river
Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,—
By the grey woods,—by the swamp
Where the toad and the newt encamp,—
By the dismal tarns and pools
Where dwell the Ghouls,—
By each spot the most unholy—
In each nook most melancholy,—
There the traveller meets aghast
Sheeted Memories of the Past—
Shrouded forms that start and sigh
As they pass the wanderer by—
White-robed forms of friends long given,
In agony, to the Earth—and Heaven.
For the heart whose woes are legion
'Tis a peaceful, soothing region—
For the spirit that walks in shadow
'Tis—oh 'tis an Eldorado!
But the traveller, travelling through it,
May not—dare not openly view it;
Never its mysteries are exposed
To the weak human eye unclosed;
So wills its King, who hath forbid
The uplifting of the fringed lid;
And thus the sad Soul that here passes
Beholds it but through darkened glasses.
By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named Night,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have wandered home but newly
From this ultimate dim Thule."

 Dream-Land

EX1 & EX2 are very high level adventures & have some quietly nasty surprises in store for the PC's & it makes sense. This demi plane is going to have to fight for existence among the myriad of planes. But Dungeonland isn't a place that ticks with the horrors of an 'in your face monster'. No this is the demi plane that feels like a fever dream happening all around your PC's. Its just as deadly but has the patience to take its time with the PC's & this is 'Alice in Wonderland' translated by the lens of Gary Gygax. There are some seriously dangerous NPC's to hand pick from these modules to get the motifs just so. Imagine PC's encountering these NPC's in a dark alley in their own home campaign & the confuse it would create. A slightly charred barrel lays at the back of the alley innocently. I've got some more twisted ideas about EX2 The Land Beyond The Magic Mirror.

The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg - Shifting Powers

Still upon my mind is our Victorious rpg campaign  after having a beer with a fellow DM today. Would the world powers of the 1890's be actively searching for & exploiting for monsters & Kaiju?! So I dragged out my Advanced Dungeons & Dragons first edition Monster Manual & Monster Manual & Monster Manual II to think about this end of the campaign.

So as the evening draws in here, thoughts of what a Martian invasion would mean to an 1897 Earth have been on my mind. A combination of classic AD&D or D&D immediately springs to mind. Imagine if you will for a moment that the Elves, Dwarves, & other mythological creatures of Europe had a foot hold or so on the elite & royal families of Europe. Every once in a while a portal to the Wilderlands of High Fantasy might open perhaps AD&D's Greyhawk.

So basically you've got monsters & tribes of myth & legend still in the far corners of the globe perhaps even the Amazons, etc. all looking into the modern world of the Nineteenth century  with more then a bit of distain. Why?! Well what if the powers of this world started exploiting the giant Kaiju for their own technological & military benefit. Godzilla would be the latest kaiju  in a string of Earth's immune system from a huge variety of otherworldly & interdimensional threats.

Does this set this world up for an all out early World War? What if Germany knows all about the Kaiju & knows about the Martian invasion by 1880 or so?! This throws everything in  Germany 1880's military machine  into overdrive with fear & panic. Germany begins an age of exploration across the globe in an effort to A. gain as many military resources as possible & B. to expand their own ranks of Kaiju or gain a technological edge. This leads to the possible invasion of the United States in 1897 all part of the  Imperial German plans for the invasion of the United States in  reality. This set up Mexico & Cuba in our Victorious game two years ago. Let's talk about Christopher Tamm of Elf Maids & Ocotopi blog, over the years Chris has been instrumental in killing off several of player's PC & having several of my characters killed off. Chris is completely unaware of this little fact. But every now & then we all need a bit of a boost. Chris has a free download Great Weird War which has been fueling a singular point.

Does the Martian Invasion of 1897 & the presence of Kaiju bring an early World War I?! Personally yes, the reason for this is that these two pressures set up perfectly for the technological march of HG Wells War in the Air , & even possibly the World Set Free..

The War in the Air is a completely alternate history & its one possible timeline that happens as a result of the Martian invasion. Both of these Wellsian peusdo historical events bring about Well's Shape of Things to Come.  This was an alternative  time line visited by the PC's in 2019 but they weren't huge fans of the Well's  one world state.

And before the fire & pitch forks start Wells was one of the first writers to do an entire shared universe for his fictional creations. But does this set up a full on post invasion war?! Only time will tell as the player's decisions shape the future of this campaign world. The presence of Kaiju excelerates many things including the development of technology & the path of alterative history.
There was also some talk today about leading the adventurers down into Gary Gygax's EX1 Dungeonland. But once again I had to remind the fellow DM & player of their encounter with the Jabberwocky  from The Dragon issue #54. This thing is a nasty customer. The player's PC's ran from the thing the last time they were in Wonderland.
And in the aftermath of the invasion there are going to be tons of undead & ghosts to deal with. Fortunely James Mishler has Ghosts The Incorporeal Undead to help generate some really nasty spirits & ghosts from the left over alien & weird radiation.

The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg - Campaign Update

My Victorious rpg has been on hiatus for sometime now. But one of the things that's been happening is minor events given the backdrop of New York City. The city is in ruins, the streets are filled with blood, & there's a new menace that's been taking out bits & pieces of the underworld. Draco El Gante is a black dragon whose migrated over from the Wilderlands of High Fantasy via Florida. He's been cutting a path up the East coast with a group of Mafia mauraders until he's gotten to New York City.

In one of my Castles & Crusades rpg campaigns a black dragon controls the underworld of New York City. Why?! Black Dragons are one of the most nasty & dangerous of the Chromatic dragons around. They have the sort of conniving disposition to handle the New York city underworld. This was after the red dragon Lady Demona  bit the dust literally against eight or so Martian walkers. Now why wasn't a red dragon going up against a Godzilla?! Are you kidding?! Why do all of the work when a radioactive lizard is doing it for you? None the less the Martians got a bit too close for comfort & so action had to be taken out. The red dragon bit the big one because of bad dice rolls on my part. So the underworld hates a vaccuum and left an opportunity for Draco El Gante & his gang to move in. Meanwhile several other wizards & evil doers who have been laying low in the fairy land of  EX1 & EX2 through a portal in barrel. Have recently decided to take quick look over the rubble is New York.

They figure now is the perfect time to take down the opposition & the Martians. So now plans are underway for them. Alliances & double crosses may result from these events. But we'll have to get back into the swing of things once the players get their collective work shedules back in shift. So the heroes are in for a real fight once they get back or will they?!

The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg Campaign Session Report - Fiend Folio Rumble in Lower Manhatten!

Its about two A.M. & & we've just broken up our
The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! game session tonight.  During tonight's game the players's PC's ran smack into a huge load of goat headed mutates & their chaos worshipping cult. They had their  around the downed remains of a Martian war machine in lower Manhatten. It was all out war! The party went into full on war mode as we took down every mutate we could find!

The problem was the fact that the war machine wasn't as inactive as it first seemed! My PC changed into werewolf form & cleaved through mutates left, right, & center! But it was getting to the back of the wreck of the war machine that revealed the biggest surprise! A live Martian with a crystal egg in its clutches! My werewolf recieved a huge blast of psionic energy right in the head!

My PC went down for the count missing his saving throw! There was also the fact that the Martian had a Grell bodyguard! That's right an honest to goodness Grell was this high ranking Martian's bodyguard. And the party's dwarf warrior went into full war mode on this thing!

He rolled a natural twenty & got a great hit on it! But the Grell was guarding something & it seemed awfully reluctant to give it up! That's when we found the Zilla eggs! This night just got better & better! Before they could hatch our Victorian lady heroine Match lighter did her thing! She torched the entire nest as we retreated!

The downside?! The Martian escaped! The Grell did not however! Fighting to the very last to cover its master's escape things got very weird very fast!

Now our party of Supermankind is in rough shape. We're down ammo, weapons, & equipment so a trip to the local Hunter & Hunter is going to be in order. There's a question of where what we think might be a Martian warlord is loose in New York. We had to call in the police to arrest the human cult members. We incapacitated them but that Grell really has the party spooked. They weren't expecting it in tonight's game.

So now its off to deal with the first church of the mind a revolting & heinous organization of mentalists, ESpers, & mentallly powered psionics who might if their in the mood for it help our party of adventurers out. We'll of course have to contibute something to the church's coffers. Meanwhile the Crimson Crusader (our paladin is on the course of the chaos energies that we saw from the Martian walker powersource. Maybe The Crimson Crusader may surive if he calls in backup if he runs into the Martians!
Next week's Victorious rpg session is shaping up to be really dangerous stay tuned!

The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg Campaign Session Report

Its two A.M. & we've just broke up our The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg Campaign Session Report. In tonight's game our little band of heroes found itself tracking through the back alleys of New York City. We were hot on the trail of a group of smugglers who we thought were dealing in illegal & highly dangerous 'lost world' contraband. That was the rumor, the reality that DM Steve had set up was quite nasty. Now before I get emails or messages explaining that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World' came out in 1912. The contraband in question came from a lost prehistoric world straight from HG Wells 1897 "A Story of the Stone Age". We tracked the 'smugglers' to a ware house & when we went inside. We found a giant mirror staring straight at us! The giant mirror sucked us right in!

We knew that we were headed straight back into Gary Gygax's EX1 Dungeon Land series! But we didn't know how vendictive DM Steve was! Out group landed straight into the back end of the Wonderland in the wastelands. Wonderland is not only a part of a barrel & demi plane in Castle Greyhawk! Oh no we found ourselves face to face with a nightmare!  The nightmare in question was a Jabberwocky, not just any Jabberwocky this thing was an ancient member of Wonderland's elite!

The Jabberwocky first appeared in Dragon magazine issue #54 and this thing was absolutely nasty.  Their described in the article;"
The Jabberwock is a huge reptilian beast which inhabits light forests or broken wastelands. The creatures resemble dragons in some respects and are occasionally mistaken for them in conditions of poor lighting. Jabberwocks, however, are wingless and far more ungainly than dragons. They do share the dragon’s interest in hoarding treasure. Jabberwocks are fierce fighters, carnivores by nature, and fond of human meat."

We say the white queen nearby watching & all of the pieces suddenly fell into place! She wanted her sister's enemies dead no matter what!

And that's when we ran away! Yup as a quick smoking break we decided to run away & regroup. We completely baffled the white queen!  And just took off in the opposite direction & didn't look back! Seriously there's nothing in the rulebook of Victorious about running away!

My were wolf PC proved cover & we beat it outta there! And the Jabberwocky is pissed! WE bolted back through the mirror taking out several card warriors as we went!

We found ourselves just outside of the alley where we had crossed over into Wonderland! Our fire starter burnt the whole pack of playing card warriors all about 4th level outside in the alley. Several of the north American monsters Amazing Adventures Manual of Monsters  make excellent enemies & the stats from Dragon issue #54 got an upgrade from the  Victorious rpg & The Amazing Adventures Book of Powers
.We know that there's dragon cult operating outta of Manhatten but we have yet to run into it!

We had to wrap up because it was getting close to almost two & there's more to go over. But I'm off to bed now!

The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg Campaign Session Report & Troll Lords Mail Call

Last night we finally got to sit down & play some The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg Campaign!  So instead of constantly being behind the screen this was a chance to actually play! We were tracking our way through the dark underbelly of 1898 New York City! This obviously is an alternative history Earth with all of the bells & whistles that go with it. We've just gotten done with a quick round of dealing with some of the horrors of OZ & Wonderland via  Gary Gygax's EX1 Dungeon Land series!

We finished off the last of a group of 3rd level card  fighter guards & just about got our heads copped off via the Queen of Heart. Her enchanted +3 vorpal battle ax is nasty as is her disposition! She's about as evil as it gets & we dealt with her scouting mission to New York on the otherside of the magick mirror last night. The cards were scattered to the four winds by the team of adventurers & murder ho erm heroes. Two of our heroes fell to the ax of the queen before she & the king of hearts retreated. That left us down a wizard & an adventurer our paragon Sir Thadius the Light of Broadway assured us he had a plan for a replacement. I didn't like the sound of this.

Alice in Wonderland by Arthur Rackham - 10 - Off with her head!

Next it was dealing & bribing with the captillar for the gateway home, we could have gone the OZ route but that would have taken too long. We had no desire to deal with the 'deadly desert' nor the Wheeliers. So it was a bribe of a saucy story, a poem of New York, & the first memory of a childhood dream to the catipillar.
File:Alice in Wonderland by Arthur Rackham - 05 - Advice from a Caterpillar.jpg

"Advice from a Caterpillar" Arthur Rackhem

We made it back to New York City with time to spare but our paragon Sir Thadius knows about the second Martian invasion coming! So he uses the brimstone letter of introduction to Dr.Charles Clamonot the detestable head  occultist belonging to the cult of Asmodeus.

So we drop in on Dr.Charles Clamonot & using the brimstone letter he can't refuse to either see us or afford us our party's favor. Needless to say he looks exactly like Boris Karloff from 1934's The Black Cat.
EDGAR G. ULMER’S THE BLACK CAT (1934) | ALFRED EAKER

Almost immediately my werewolf doesn't like him in the least. There's the smell of death around him & after a few rolls some of his coven/guests are undead of several varieties. I succeed on several of my rolls to stay in control but the rest of the party knows not to pull anything at his penthouse scene. I file away the information for later & know that there was mention of some ladies missing around the city. My wolf senses say that this guy has some presverved corpses in the basement. But we'll handle him later.
We explain that we need a replacement team member fast for our team. He knows someone who might help but it will be dangerous. We need to trust him, now I know what your thinking there's got to be plenty of heroes or D&D characters who can handle the load. We nod but don't trust him at all.
The Black Cat. (Trailer 1934). - YouTube

He gathers his coven around him & opens a planar portal to some desert on a strange world. We step through & no one askss him how we get back! The letter of the law of Hell with the brimstone letter is done & it disappears from Sir Thadius hand in a puff of smoke!
So we find ourselves face to face to face with an elaborate pyramid in the middle of an alien desert!?! The sky is red as Hell & there are seven stars in the sky. Make of that what you will if you know Bram Stroker. Not a good scene?! Then several mummies pop from the sands! And we engage in battle! They are destroyed & we check for signs of mummy rot immediately!
Nothing something is not right?!
443 best images about Old School TSR RPG's Rock:Dungeons ...

Just as we're about to have more of the mummies burst from the sand a voice calls them off one by one in Greek. And that's when we're confronted by Liz our player's new PC's Fantomah, Daughter of the Pharaohs! After her wizard was killed off earlier the game by the Queen of Hearts I grabbed a copy of
The Three Lives of Fantomah: Daughter of the Pharaohs by NUELOW Games

With some quick work from the  Victorious rpg & The Amazing Adventures Book of Powers  we were able to adapt all of  Fantomah, Daughter of the Pharaohs as a team member very quickly. So with some very quick neogatitions in Greek we were able to jump back to New York. And that's where we were attacked by strange cultists as we made our way to our head quarters!

Swords, knives, & battle brought the police but we were able to collect a strange implant from the neck of one of the cultists after our new team mate decaptitated one of em. DM Steve is a crafty bastard & personally used one my monsters against me. In this case it was A Merrit's Metal Monster radio  implants!

Metal monster sharp.jpg

My werewolf was wounded badly by a teleforce weapon that one of the bastards was wielding!
The Metal Monster tecnology came straight outta  the
TLG 77051 Victorious: Hunter & Hunter Catalog.

That bastard DM has a plan to work in Godzilla for next week's game! And today look what appeared on my doorstep today! But the Kickstarter rewards from
Castles & Crusades Codex Egyptium!

I also got two other Castles & Crusade books that go with this lovely hard cover book. For sometime now I've been looking forward to getting these. Now with them you can expect reviews to be forth coming.

The real star of the show has to be  Castles & Crusades Codex Egyptium!  which has been on my mind for sometime now. The Castle & Crusades facebook has been posting pictures months now & now that I've joined the club I'm looking forward to using these at the table top level.

War of the Worlds Godzilla 1914 - Years Zero 1912 -1913 A Troll Lord Games OSR/ Victorious rpg Campaign

"At any rate, in all the bodies of the Martians that were examined after the war, no bacteria except those already known as terrestrial species were found. That they did not bury any of their dead, and the reckless slaughter they perpetrated, point also to an entire ignorance of the putrefactive process. But probable as this seems, it is by no means a proven conclusion.
Neither is the composition of the Black Smoke known, which the Martians used with such deadly effect, and the generator of the Heat- Rays remains a puzzle. The terrible disasters at the Ealing and South Kensington laboratories have disinclined analysts for further investigations upon the latter. Spectrum analysis of the black powder points unmistakably to the presence of an unknown element with a brilliant group of three lines in the green, and it is possible that it combines with argon to form a compound which acts at once with deadly effect upon some constituent in the blood. But such unproven speculations will scarcely be of interest to the general reader, to whom this story is addressed. None of the brown scum that drifted down the Thames after the destruction of Shepperton was examined at the time, and now none is forthcoming.
The results of an anatomical examination of the Martians, so far as the prowling dogs had left such an examination possible, I have already given. But everyone is familiar with the magnificent and almost complete specimen in spirits at the Natural History Museum, and the countless drawings that have been made from it; and beyond that the interest of their physiology and structure is purely scientific."
The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells
Chapter 10: The Epilogue

So War of the Worlds Godzilla 1914 got a bit of traction yesterday or today depending upon your side of the Atlantic or sea.  But I heard that there wasn't any room for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons characters or Castles & Crusades characters. In fact I'm gonna be doing this with the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master's Guide! The Europe of 1912-13 of War of the Worlds Godzilla 1914 is rotten with ruins. The Random Dungeon Generator in the Advanced Dungeon Master's Guide is perfect for creating them.

The Martian Invaders  weren't through with Earth after the 1898 invasion & in fact the overgrown ruins scattered across Europe became the dungeons of the coming years. Rubble & ruins breed all kinds of conspiracies in the dark. And it also breeds occult  secret societies & much worse such as the terrorists organizations. Add to this the fact that just like the previous invasions the Martian invaders used psychic probes in the form of the Crystal Eggs. These were scattered across Europe and so fell into the hands of all kinds of organizations & secret occult societies. Now details on the Crystal Egg were written up by The Old School Heretic Blog back in 2012.  Throughout Europe Victorious rpg operatives & agents are engaged in a shadow war.

Not every nation had been so forth coming with their discoveries & break down of the Martian invaders technologies. Wilhelm The Second's scientists & departments had quite successfully developed an atomic bomb from the Martian Invaders power sources. The Germans were actually quite horrified by some of their black technologies. The biggest problem came with the testing of the Martian planar gate & special warp technologies. Men & soldiers were cut in half, many were burnt up in elemental fires, and some were swapped with other worldly counterparts.

This planar gate  experimentation is one of the things that triggered the awakening of the Martian invaders for the second round. But many of the monsters that were triggered prior to the 1914 invasion were from both many world wide lost worlds & from elsewhere. These monsters are easily drawn from Castles & Crusades Monster & Treasure books with extra powers &  Kaiju abilities drawn from the Siege Engine Book of Powers.

Make no mistake that this is a world where the crown heads of Europe are not only a reality but a historical fact. The traditional royal families are in full effect here giving the DM ample opportunity to add in magic or even D&D style classes into the mix as royal retainers. Here's the perfect spot to add in Lion & Dragon rpg  or even Dark Albion's setting or Cults of Chaos books. The Cult of the Star Gazer for example might be the perfect way of adding in a very dangerous alien or outsider element to the mix whist giving the party even more of a scare.  The Martian Invaders technologies & power sources are perfectly suited to be Chaotic by their very nature causing mutation, insanity or worse.

This is the perfect time to use a Ruritanian romance element to this campaign; "Ruritanian romance is a genre of literature, film and theatre comprising novels, stories, plays and films set in a fictional country, usually in Central or Eastern Europe, such as the "Ruritania" that gave the genre its name.[1]

Such stories are typically swashbuckling adventure novels, tales of high romance and intrigue, centered on the ruling classes, almost always aristocracy and royalty,[1] although (for instance) Winston Churchill's novel Savrola, in every other way a typical example of the genre, concerns a revolution to restore rightful parliamentary government in the republican country of Laurania. The themes of honor, loyalty and love predominate, and the works frequently feature the restoration of legitimate government after a period of usurpation or dictatorship"

Fictional countries are established only to obliterated in the shadow of the on coming war & the invasion coming up. PC's could be working hard to avert the on coming horrors by globe trotting & trying to get a handle on both the espionage, saving heads of Europe, dealing with hidden witch covens, & trying to survive against the monstrous spawn of Kaiju. Add to the mix on very dangerous arch wizard in the form of the d' Amberville family & things get extremely weird.  Yeah that's right X2: "Castle Amber (Chateau d' Amberville)" (1981), by Tom Moldvay, is the perfect pre war kick in the teeth for a Pulp campaign such as this. Stephen
d' Amberville is undead & not taking it lying down! He's got his fingers in the coming invasion & he's quite pissed about it.

Stephen d' Amberville has been playing chess with the rest of pre WWI Europe & especially against his dedicated partner/opponent Otto von Bismarck. With his successor coming up & now this invasion business his game will be interrupted, again. This may never do. He's going to summon the party to his home & employ them for a series of missions!

But Castle Amber is only the half of it.

War of the Worlds Godzilla 1914 - The Opening Salvo A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg Campaign

"At any rate, whether we expect another invasion or not, our views of the human future must be greatly modified by these events. We have learned now that we cannot regard this planet as being fenced in and a secure abiding place for Man; we can never anticipate the unseen good or evil that may come upon us suddenly out of space. It may be that in the larger design of the universe this invasion from Mars is not without its ultimate benefit for men; it has robbed us of that serene confidence in the future which is the most fruitful source of decadence, the gifts to human science it has brought are enormous, and it has done much to promote the conception of the commonweal of mankind. It may be that across the immensity of space the Martians have watched the fate of these pioneers of theirs and learned their lesson, and that on the planet Venus they have found a securer settlement. Be that as it may, for many years yet there will certainly be no relaxation of the eager scrutiny of the Martian disk, and those fiery darts of the sky, the shooting stars, will bring with them as they fall an unavoidable apprehension to all the sons of men."The War of the Worlds by H. The other day I spoke of
The War of the Worlds Godzilla 1898! - A Troll Lord Games Victorious rpg Campaign Set Up here on the blog. The Martian Invasion of 1898  is securely in the rear window of the history of mankind. We can get back to the business of killing each other as the events of World War One begin to heat up. Super human operatives have been increasing as the weird radiations of the Earth absorbed during the first invasion have spread across the planet due to the  Van Allen Belt.  Troll Lord's Victorious rpg system not only has the Martian Invasion of 1898 covered but some of the Barsoomian nation's technology who were speaking with mankind since the 1898 invasion in the Hunter & Hunter catalog.

Godzilla hasn't been seen anywhere since the last invasion, he's disappeared, & several expeditions haven't been able to locate him. A disparate warning comes across the Gridley wave, the warning from the Martian nation city state of Helium. The city ruins of the Invaders have roared to life. The Thark tribal nations warriors have seen the trails of the rocket launches! The second invasion has begun. The hyper spacial warp trail signature of the Martians is unmistakable.  But mankind is too busy to notice.

The Earth caught within its own conflicts in Europe & is ill prepared for the coming onslaught! The opening events of World War I are interrupted by the sudden invasion of the Martians coming in full force during 1914! A solid overview of a possible docudrama resource for this Victorious rpg campaign is the excellent The Great Martian War 1914 -1917.

One of the prophets of the coming horrors might already be among the population but incarcerated within one of the most infamous prisons within the Victorious setting. One of Darkmore Prison's most infamous inmates may already hold the key to the Martian invasion!
TLG 77041 Victorious: Phantasmagrio has an array of incredible NPC's perfect for piercing the vale of the Martian's vicious plans for mankind.

This is the perfect time to send a band of intrepid heroes deep into the jungles of South America. With information provided to them by a certain master of evil the party of adventurers makes their way to Maple White Land. The prehistoric realm described in British writer Arthur Conan Doyle
, 'The Lost World'. Godzilla has used the underwater & inner Earth tunnels to return to his ancient home land in the wilds of South America. The PC's must brave life & limb to awaken the great beast!

Meanwhile the Martians are far more dangerous then the last time. They have adapted to Earth's atmosphere & the begun to twist their way through Europe! Their war machines are even more dangerous then the last time!

Another warning comes from within the Fey realms of Gary Gygax's Ex2   "Land Beyond the Magic. Mirror" The Fey know more about the coming darkness then anyone has guessed & the PC's must make a journey & a leap of faith.

Here Troll Lord's The Codex Celtarum is the classic Castles & Crusades resource to add a bit more gravitas to the Fey of Dungeon Land.

Can the players make it back in time to deal with not only the British government but the effects of having the Martians on their own door step?! Find out next time!
