Five Cult Classic Fantasy Movies As Inspiration For Your Old School Campaigns

Here's five old school fantasy films that are essential viewing for your old school fantasy campaigns. Coming up upon Winter these are perfect fantasy fodder for designing OD&D or AD&D 1st edition adventures .
Excalibur 1981

The inspiration for 40K, countless fantasy Camelot adventures, with a look & feel of gritty mud soaked sword and sorcery goodness. Still a classic.

One of the first movies that actually treated Dragons as more then simple monsters. But incredibly complex and incredibly dangerous creatures whose power weaves itself into the pattern of magic and wizards. This one shows what happens when an age of wizards ends and the ascension of  kings. Ninety eighty one is a banner year for fantasy.
Dragon's Slayer 1981

Jason and The Argonauts from 1963 is another classic which deals with so many classic elements from the politics of the Gods, to the incredibly weird take on classic Greek mythology, and the stop motion work of Ray Harryhausen. Then there is the mini quests that surround every little niche of the mythology of this one.

The original Clash of the Titans is one of my all time favorite fantasy films to fall back on for old school gaming. Mini quests surrounding the politics of the Gods and stop motion work of Ray Harryhausen not to mention the perfect ad hoc mythological monsters of myth and legend.

For my last film is the classic from 1974 The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. I wanted to really mix it up a bit of classic fantasy work. This one has a nice variety of creatures set against an epic quest with a great old school score and some of the most classic production bits to come out of the 70's. This film makes a nice switch up on a chilly October night to pull ideas and mine for a great old school campaign. Lots of potential with this classic.

Five Cult Classic Films As Inspiration For Your Old School Campaigns

There are times when a DM has to unleash the bigger guns into their campaigns and challenge a party here are a few movie nasties to play hard ball with your adventurers. Nineteen Fifty Four and earlier must have been a heck of a time for monster movies. So many cult classics of that era allow us see where the trends of yesteryear can become the gaming gold standard of today.
These horrors could be encountered out in the post apocalyptic wasteland just as easily as within the past eras of the Atomic Age.A time travel angle will enable PC's to fight or escape these horrors of the Atomic Age and perhaps save the world to boot.

The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms 1953

The Deadly Mantis From 1957

Earth Vs The Flying Saucers 1957
The Tarantula 1955
Godzilla 1954

It Conquered The World 1954

More coming up in the morning!

In no particular order here they are and as always your mileage may vary.
