OSR Room Stocking Quick-Rules (d6 Overlay)
If you prefer rolling a quick 1d6 per room during live play or prep, use these classic ratios:
1-3: Empty / Feature / Hazard (Roll d100 on rows 01-50 above for flavor)
4-5: Monster (Roll d100 on rows 51-90; 1-in-3 chance to hold treasure)
6: Special / Trap / Major Treasure (Roll d100 on rows 31-45 or 91-00)
d50 Interactive OSR Tricks, Weird Objects, and Eldritch Machines
The Basin of Silver Mercury: A still pool of liquid metal. Dipping a metal weapon permanently coats it in silver, but reduces its hit die/damage by 1 step due to softening. Drinking requires a Save vs. Poison or turns the creature's blood to mercury (speed halved, immune to non-magical pierces, vulnerable to lightning).
The Brass Astrolabe of the Void: A wall-mounted brass ring device. Turning the rings changes the gravity direction in the room. A character who fails an Intelligence check while operating it flips gravity globally for the whole dungeon level for 1 turn.
The Sarcophagus of Glass: Completely clear, unbreachable glass containing an ancient king. Placing a corpse on top dissolves the corpse over 1 turn and opens the lid for 10 minutes.
The Obsidian Dial: A floor dial numbered 1 to 12. Turning the hand advances local dungeon time by that many hours instantly (torches burn out, wandering monster checks are made all at once, spells expire).
The Weeping Altar: A stone statue bleeding clear sap. Smearing the sap on eyelids grants Detect Invisible for 1 hour, but causes permanent colorblindness.
The Bell of Forgotten Names: A cracked bronze handbell. Ringing it makes the user completely invisible and unremembered by all allies and enemies for 3 turns. Afterwards, everyone forgets one spell, language, or memory chosen at random.
The Copper Battery Tree: A mechanical tree with humming copper fruits. Plucking a fruit deals 1d8 shock damage. Feeding a copper coin into a bark slot charges a fruit; a charged fruit acts as a 2d6 lighting grenade when thrown.
The Mirror of Inverse Flesh: Shows the user's skeleton instead of their reflection. Touching the glass swaps the PC's current and maximum Hit Points with their Armor Class (base AC becomes HP, base HP becomes AC) for 24 hours.
The Alchemist’s Distillation Globe: A giant glass sphere filled with yellow vapor. Breaking it unleashes a cloud that transforms all mundane iron items into solid gold, but rots all leather, cloth, and wood within 30 feet.
The Tapestry of the Unseen Room: Depicts a room identical to the current one, but with an extra chest. Reaching into the fabric requires a DEX check; success lets a PC pull out 2d6x10 gp. Failure means a spectral hand pulls them inside (trapped inside the fabric).
The Iron Font of Transmutation: Filled with bubbling green sludge. Immersing a mundane weapon grants it a +1 enchantment, but gives it a hunger: it must draw blood from its wielder once per day or permanently rust into dust.
The Ivory Organ: Playing a music-capable character's song requires a CHA or Performance check. Success opens a secret passage. Failure summons 1d4 Spectres drawn to the discordant noise.
The Clockwork Oracle: A bronze head that accepts gold coins. Inserting 50 gp grants a truthful "Yes/No" answer to a question about the dungeon. Roll 1d6 each time used: on a 1, it overheats and explodes for 3d6 shrapnel damage.
The Sun-Lens Array: Lenses focus an intense beam of light into a dark pit. Blocking the beam disables all traps in the dungeon section, but spawns 1d3 Shadow creatures in the room.
The Well of Echoing Thoughts: Looking down shows a starry void. Dropping a coin allows a character to cast ESP on any named target in the dungeon once. Dropping a weapon causes the well to hurl a Lightning Bolt back up the shaft.
The Skull of the First Lich: Mounted on a pedestal with glowing emerald eyes. Whispering a secret to it cures all diseases and curses, but the Lich gains total mental scrying on the speaker forever.
The Pedestal of Great Weight: A floating stone block. Placing a weapon on it doubles its damage dice but quadruples its weight slot/encumbrance. Removing it restores original stats.
The Cage of the Soul-Wasp: A brass cage holding a golden insect. Crushing the insect instantly revives a dead party member with 1 HP, but the person who crushed it loses 1 permanent Constitution point.
The Cauldron of Boiling Stars: A glowing cauldron filled with liquid cosmos. Scooping it with a vial creates a Potion of Invisibility. Scooping it with bare hands permanently burns off the user's fingers (-2 DEX, cannot wield two-handed weapons).
The Door of Unmaking: A door made of pure pitch-black shadow with no handle. Throwing a magic item at it destroys the item permanently and opens the door.
The Singing Crystal Column: Vibrates softly. Touching it cures 1d8 HP but forces a Save vs. Spell; failure causes the PC to continuously hum loudly for 1 day, negating surprise.
The Flesh-Weaver’s Loom: A biological loom strung with tendons. Feeding it 10 lbs of meat weaves a suit of biological armor (+2 AC, regenerates 1 HP/turn, but eats 1 ration from the wearer per day).
The Anvil of the Star-Metal: Striking an item on this anvil converts its material to meteoric iron (indestructible, counts as silver/magical). Roll 1d6: on a 1-2, the wielder's arm shatters (permanently useless without magic).
The Globe of Frozen Time: A suspended orb of ice. Cracking it creates a 20-foot field where time completely stops for 3 rounds. Anyone inside cannot move, take actions, or be harmed.
The Horn of the Red Dragon: Mounted on a stone wall. Blowing it unleashes a 30-foot cone of fire (3d6 damage), but immediately triggers a wandering monster check across the entire dungeon floor.
The Skeleton of the Geometer: A ribcage holding three polyhedral dice. Rolling them applies random effects to the room: 1) Gravity flips, 2) Room fills with water, 3) Room becomes pitch dark, 4-6) Nothing happens.
The Fountain of Youthful Folly: Drinking reverses the character's age by 2d6 years. If age drops below 12, mental stats drop to 6 and maximum HP is halved.
The Brass Chimney of Combustion: Throwing a corpse inside burns it to ash instantly and generates a Scroll of Fireball. Throwing a living creature inside produces a Scroll of Resurrection.
The Pool of Liquid Light: Radiates bright light for 60 feet. Bathing a shield in the water makes it flash blinding light once per day (enemies fail save or are blinded for 1d4 rounds).
The Idol of the Hungry God: A stone maw. Feeding it 100 gp worth of gems grants +1 to hit for 24 hours. Feeding it copper or iron causes it to spit acid (2d6 damage to all nearby).
The Sundial of the Eclipse: Moving the gnomon blocks the sun. Instantly plunges the overland area outside into total darkness for 1 hour, allowing nocturnal dungeon monsters to surface.
The Crucible of Blood: A stone basin with a dagger attached by a chain. Sacrificing 1d6 HP into the basin fills a flask with a Potion of Healing equal to the HP lost.
The Sphere of Absolute Silence: A 5-foot floating black orb. Within a 15-foot radius, no sound can be made (negates spellcasting with verbal components, automatic surprise for characters).
The Monolith of Memory: Touching the monolith restores all expended spell slots instantly, but the caster forgets all standard languages for 1 week.
The Marionette Rig: Wood and string harness suspended from the ceiling. A PC strapped in can be controlled by another player: grants +4 to AC and attack rolls, but all damage taken is split between controller and marionette.
The Jar of Endless Teeth: A glass jar filled with human teeth. Scattering them on the floor creates a hazard equivalent to caltrops that automatically animates into 1d4 skeletal jaws attacking ankles (1 damage/round, reduces speed by half).
The Prism of Split Alignment: Looking through the prism flips the character's moral alignment for 12 hours and reveals hidden planar gates.
The Furnace of the Iron Golem: Cold forge shaped like a titan. Loading 200 lbs of coal and lighting it activates the arm to smash down walls or open jammed portcullises once.
The Crown of the Worm-King: Resting on a skeleton. Putting it on grants command over all vermin/insects within 100 feet, but lowers Charisma to 3 while worn due to squirming maggots under the skin.
The Arch of the Long Step: Step through to instantly teleport to any other archway in the dungeon. Roll 1d100: on a 01-05, the PC is deposited into the Astral Plane instead.
The Tomb of the Doppelganger: A mirror-lined coffin. Opening it spawns an exact duplicate of the opener. The duplicate believes it is the real character and attempts to kill and replace them.
The Incubator of the Homunculus: A glass vat of yellow brine. Dropping a drop of blood inside creates a loyal homunculus helper over 1 turn, but permanently reduces max HP by 1 until the creature dies.
The Pendulum of Inevitability: A giant blade swinging across the room. Timed movement requires a DEX check. Stopping the pendulum unlocks the doors, but causes the ceiling to slowly lower (10 turns until crushed).
The Book of Blank Fate: Pages are blank. Writing a PC's name in blood removes one curse or disease, but inscribes a random magical phobia on their mind.
The Idol of the Slumbering Wurm: Smells of sulfur. Offering it a magical item puts all monsters in the current dungeon room to sleep for 1 hour.
The Resonant Tuning Fork: Giant 6-foot metal fork struck into the stone floor. Striking it shatters all glass and potion vials within 50 feet and stuns all creatures wearing metal armor for 1 round.
The Basin of Star-Silt: Glowing dust. Coating leather armor in it grants advantage on stealth checks in shadows, but makes the wearer burn for double damage from fire attacks.
The Wheel of Fortune: A carnival-style wooden wheel. Spinning costs 10 gp:
1: Lose 1d6 STR permanently.
2: Gain 500 XP.
3: Summon 1d6 Ghouls.
4: Gain a random +1 weapon.
The Eye of the Void: A giant eye floating in a jar. Staring into it grants darkvision 120ft, but light sources burn 2x faster when held by this character due to an aura of darkness.
The Heart of the Dungeon: A pulsing, organ-like stone in the lowest room. Hitting it deals 1 damage to the dungeon itself, causing a localized cave-in (2d6 damage to all in room). Destroying it collapses the entire dungeon floor.
d100 OSR Strange Magic Items, Artifacts & Subtle Curses
Designed for Old School Renaissance (OSR) play, these items emphasize creative problem-solving, narrative utility, and meaningful tradeoffs rather than flat numerical bonuses (+1 swords).
| d100 | Item Name | Mechanical Effect & Narrative Utility | Subtle Curse / Unexpected Tradeoff |
| 01 | Lantern of the Unseen Thread | Sheds dim blue light (30ft radius) that reveals invisible creature footprints and secret door seams. | All light-sensitive monsters target the bearer first; mundane shadows cast by the light appear to twitch independent of motion. |
| 02 | Chime of Opening (Cracked) | Vibrates open any locked door or chest within 20ft instantly. | Emits an ear-splitting bell chime audible across the entire dungeon level (triggers immediate wandering monster check). |
| 03 | Mask of the Wax Faceless | When pressed against a fresh corpse, morphs to match its face, granting flawless physical disguise. | While worn, the user cannot speak aloud—only raspy, dry whispers in the dead person’s native tongue. |
| 04 | Boots of the Striding Ant | Wielder can carry double their normal encumbrance limit without penalty. | The user’s footprints are pressed 3 inches deep into any surface (even solid stone), leaving an un-eraseable trail. |
| 05 | The Iron Siphon | Drains 10ft of standing liquid (water, oil, wine) into a pocket dimensional brass flask once per day. | The flask leaks a slow, foul sulfuric smell that alerts scavengers and tracking hounds within 100ft. |
| 06 | Rope of the Hanged Sentinel | 50ft hemp rope that ties itself, climbs smooth walls, and anchors instantly on command. | If used to bind a living creature, it slowly strangulates them (1d4 damage/turn) unless actively held back by the owner. |
| 07 | Ring of the Copper Leech | Converts incoming electricity or lightning damage into temporary Hit Points (lasts 1 hour). | Magically attracts non-magical copper coins; carrying copper causes the ring to constrict, dealing 1 bludgeoning damage/turn. |
| 08 | Goggles of the Coal-Miner | Grants 60ft Darkvision in total darkness. | Bright light (torches, sunlight) blinds the wearer for 1d4 rounds unless they spend a turn removing the goggles. |
| 09 | The Sinking Anchor Key | When thrown into water, instantly sinks and locks the nearest underwater gate, chest, or door within 50ft. | Requires a Bend Bars / Lift Gates check to pull back out; weighs as much as an anvil while submerged. |
| 10 | Quill of the Silent Scribe | Copies any book, scroll, or map instantly when placed alongside a blank sheet. | Uses the scribe’s own blood as ink (deals 1 point of permanent Constitution damage until a full week of rest). |
| 11 | Needle of the Bone-Stitcher | Mends non-magical cloth, leather, or hide armor back to full durability in 1 turn. | Stitches fuse painfully into the wearer's skin; removing the mended armor deals 1d6 damage. |
| 12 | Stone of the Hungry Well | When dropped down a shaft, telepathically reports depth, liquid presence, and air quality. | The stone screams loudly like a dying goat when it hits bottom, echoing up the shaft. |
| 13 | Cloak of the Dust-Mote | Wearer can turn into a cloud of swirling dust for 1 turn (cannot attack, passes through keyholes). | Highly flammable; taking fire damage while in dust form doubles the fire damage taken. |
| 14 | Grease-Pot of the Gremlin | Generates infinite slippery lard used to bypass traps or coat floors (counts as 10ft Grease spell). | Smells appetizingly like roasted pork; hungry beasts prioritize targeting the user's pack. |
| 15 | Dagger of the Tooth-Fairy | Ignores natural armor/hide; deals maximum damage against skeleton or bone-based creatures. | Every successful hit pulls one of the wielder's own teeth out (lowers Charisma by 1 per 5 teeth lost). |
| 16 | The Lead Sarcophagus Box | Storing a corpse inside prevents all decomposition, decay, and reanimation into undead indefinitely. | Weighs 3 slots of encumbrance; any magical potion placed inside permanently turns into muddy water. |
| 17 | Candle of the Corpse-Light | Burns with a green flame that reveals the cause of death of any body in its 15ft light radius. | Dripping wax permanently stains the holder's hands black; undead can sense the candle's location from 1 mile. |
| 18 | Hammer of the Tunneler | Breaks through 1 foot of solid stone or masonry per strike with zero noise. | Leaves behind a trail of fine stone-dust that causes coughing fits (Save vs. Poison or take -2 to attack rolls for 1 hour). |
| 19 | Coin of the Greedy Merchant | Always flips to heads; looks like a standard gold piece. | If spent, magically teleports back into the owner's purse at midnight, leaving behind a worthless lead slug. |
| 20 | Bandage of the Martyr | Instantly stabilizes a dying character at 1 HP. | Transfers the wounded character’s worst injury or status effect directly onto the person applying the bandage. |
| 21 | Horn of the Stampede | Summons a spectral herd of bulls that breaks down barricades and wooden doors in a 30ft line. | Deafens the user and all allies within 20ft for 1 turn after blowing it. |
| 22 | Mirror of the Split Self | Step through to create a duplicate self for 1 hour to scout ahead. | The duplicate holds half of the original PC's current HP; if the duplicate dies, the real PC loses those HP permanently. |
| 23 | Flask of the Endless Salt | Pours endless sea salt; useful for preserving rations, salting soil, or blinding eyes. | Drinking water within 10ft of the flask tastes unpalatably brackish. |
| 24 | Glove of the Iron Grip | Grants automatic success on climbing rolls or holding onto slipping ledges. | Takes 1 full turn of painful prying to release grip from whatever metal object was grabbed. |
| 25 | Whistle of the Rat-King | Draws all rats, mice, and vermin within 300ft to form a distraction swarm for 3 turns. | The swarm turns hostile toward the caller once the whistle stops sounding. |
| 26 | Pouch of the Star-Dust | Throwing a handful reveals invisible creatures and magical auras for 1 turn. | Glitters intensely; renders stealth checks impossible while carried in open pockets. |
| 27 | Scythe of the Harvester | Clears dense foliage, roots, and vines in a 10ft path instantly. | Cuts through mundane wooden weapons and staff-weapons if wielded carelessly near allies. |
| 28 | Eye of the Gorgon (Fossilized) | Looking through the pupil grants the ability to turn small animals (size of a dog) to stone once/day. | User's skin slowly calcifies (+1 AC, but -2 Dexterity and double weight encumbrance). |

| 30 | Key of the Skeleton Key | Fits into any keyhole and turns the tumbler automatically. | Has a 2-in-6 chance to snap off in the lock, jamming it permanently and triggering a alarm trap. |
| 31 | Vial of the Liquid Shadow | Pouring on a weapon grants +2 to hit from ambush / surprise rounds. | The shadow creeps onto the user's arms; casts no shadow in daylight, provoking suspicion in towns. |
