Review & Commentary The 'Pay What You'd Like' OSR Pulp Adventure - The Paranoia Pit From Griffon Publishing Studio For Your Old School Campaigns

I love Twenties thru Fifties perhaps into Sixties  pulp role playing and its my second love right after DYI D&D. For this set up I highly suggest that you visit David Bay Miller's OSR Library. There your going to find a ton of OD&D/Swords and Wizardry modern resources including Firearms rules, equipment, PC classes, etc. all that can easily fit this module/adventure for free.

Right now on to the Paranoia Pit! This is a ten page free or pay what you'd like adventure set during the heyday of the forth age of exploration during the 1930's or so.
The set up is classic monster movie or Saturday matinee serial fare, 'The heroes fly to a remote island (close
to the Japanese Mandate) noted in pencil on the chart. An executive of the Standard Oil
Company provided the coordinates when he contracted the heroes to run cargo to a fiveman
survey there; the information is considered proprietary and therefore not on any established maps.'
Yes, I already know that this an attempt to sell the author's rpg the Heroes of Rura - Tonga. I say more power to him. He's offering a free pdf adventure and there are number of titles also available for pay what you like purchase. This is part of an island hopping campaign style of adventure role playing. Now where have I seen that idea before?Oh yeah!

So you've got the perfect set up for any number of OSR game adventures. Now I've heard some folks using this adventure for a Call of Cthulhu style game adventure and other friends of mine have run this with Lamentations of the Flame Princess using David Bay Miller's OSR add ons.
The module puts your PC's right into the heart of a weird pulpy supernatural happening and adventure style that emulates a few early pulp era conventions. This isn't a bad thing at all. And we get a bit of a preview of Rura-Tonga and its environs.
So there's also a preview of the 'Any System Key' in there as well, this is rules lite conversion tool for your post and premodern games. Not too bad if this is the rules set that your aiming for.
So what can be done with "The Paranoia Pit"? Well what can't really? This adventure could with a bit of work be used as a jump off point for a series of dungeon explorations as you as the dungeon master place a small dungeon or ruin of a forgotten Pacific people some place on the island and its environs. Its really not a badly done little package for setting up for an investigative style series of occult  adventures in the tradition of Indiana Jones . I really don't want to give away too much of the plot of this short set up and dive into adventure. As a pulpy modern Lovecraftian adventure  The Paranoia Pit has the potential to act as a spring board into a full blown modern occult campaign. There are a number of retroclones rpg systems that could work for taking this adventure to the next level. We'll get into some of those coming up in another blog entry soon. I'd give the Paranoia Pit an even four out of five stars as a free jump off point for adventuring into the pulp era and lifting the veil from your player's eyes!

Review of the 'Pay What You Want' OSR Adventure - The EIGHTH Psychedelic Fantasies module For Your Old School Science Fantasy Campaigns

Its always a good night when I come home to a new copy of a Psychedelic Fantasies adventure but its even better when its one from Bjorn Waredal whose work is very familiar to me. Once again this wonderful little line of high weirdness system neutral OSR goodness delivers the goods. Here we have an eleven page adventure location based goodness in an old school mini campaign but one that does its job in style and with a sense of fun that really compliments the adventure in spades. Here's far warning ahead, pick this adventure up! Seriously this is a perfect vehicle as a middle of the campaign flash or bridge gap. There's literally a ton of links to tie this little adventure in with your favorite retroclone OD&D style, science fantasy  or post apocalyptic old school campaign. With little modification this adventure could be used with Lamentations of the Flame Princess's Carcosa. Best of all its on 'Pay what you'd Want'

Proteus Sinking (Psychedelic Fantasies #8)

Proteus Sinking by Bjorn Warmedal

As you can imagine Proteus Sinking is a low level science fantasy campaign adventure that puts the PC's right into the middle of the action. The author has taken the unbridled creativity into a whole other directions then other adventures in this line.
From the Rpgnow blurb:
This adventure is set on a crashed starship of gelatinous beings. You do not have to wait until the PCs are high-level to get them into crazy sci-fi weirdness, for this module is for character levels 1-3. Start them off right away with the crazy. Don't let the Globo-Zen, Globo-Disco, and hallucinogenic mushrooms fool you into letting your guard down. This dungeon will kill you.

Compatible with every old school version of the original fantasy role-playing game.

Each stand-alone adventure module in the Psychedelic Fantasies line revels in unconstrained imagination. Every monster, every magic power, and every magic spell is a unique and never-before-seen creation of the author. No orcs, fireballs, or +1 swords will be found within. Leave the familiar behind to explore hitherto undreamed of wonders…

Even though this is a low level adventure it does a really nice job with its encounters of keeping events interesting, room descriptions inventive, and monster encounters deadly. This is one of the those adventures that can easily be plugged into a deep post apoclapytic wasteland campaign or a sword & planet location. This entire adventure could take place within one hex upon Carcosa easily and become a mini campaign for a few weeks as the PC's go from room to room dealing with the high weirdness and alien devices. Make no mistake that if the PC's are not wise they will end up dead or worse.
The monsters have a definite tongue & cheek quality to them but this for me part of the appeal of them. That does not make them any less deadly at all. Certain parts of this adventure remind me of the 'Mother Ship Zeta' expansion to the Fall Out Three video game. But this is in a good way, because this adventure is going to keep the PC's  guessing.
And that's really one of the strengths of this adventure the fact that while its well done its going to move the PC's into completely unexpected directions. This is a nice bridge gap adventure to take PC's from a fantasy setting to science fantasy or science fiction setting climate.
Ten pages isn't a huge module but its a decent change of pace for an old school dungeon romp through this adventure location.  In other words pick this adventure up and get into some really nice old school dungeon crawl with a high room count in an unexpected adventure location. In other words pick this one up as soon as possible.

Review On 'The Pay What You'd Like' The 1000 Items Scavenged in the Post-Apocalypse From The Amazing List of Things

Grab It Right Over
HERE
This product does exactly what it says on the outer label, 1000 items for a post apocalyptic campaign. Any PA dungeon master knows that you can't ever have enough items or artifacts to throw into the mix. This isn't a bad little mix of stuff. The problem is that its simply more artifacts. How its used is strictly up to the DM and that's not so much a problem as it is a question of imagination.
1000 Items Scavenged in the Post-Apocalypse contains an assorted collection of items both strange and ordinary, both dangerous and useful, that a scavenger might find in the ruins of civilization.
Some items you might scavenge:
301. False teeth
375. Gravy boat
567. Mummified hand
783. Six-pack of beer
The Amazing List of Things is dedicated to bringing you quality lists for randomly generating campaign content.
This product is system agnostic and can be used in any campaign with any game system.

This product is truly system agnostic and we'll get more into that below.

Using The
The 1000 Items Scavenged in the Post-Apocalypse
For Your Old School PA Campaign

There are a number of applications for this material, one as an alternative item and artifact chart for your favorite PA system, as random item generator for your favorite failed space colony, or as an item generator for an 'alternative Earth' adventure. The variety is solid and interesting but there needs something a bit more behind this supplement but that on the DM's part not the writer and designer. This is a nice go to generic list and item generator. The fact is that the writer and designer created a perfect product for DYI old school gaming. And it does its job and its a perfect filler for your system. This is really one of the reasons why this product is true system neutral and its made to fit any post apocalyptic gaming campaign.
If you need an additional PA item generator and true system neutral old school artifact generator look into this one.
