Rodan from the Monsterverse Movies for Cepheus Engine Rpg Including Scaling The Weapons of The Cepheus Engine Rpg To Damage Titans

Rodan, known as the "Fire Demon" in the Monsterverse, is a Titan-class aerial predator. In The Cepheus Engine, he is not just a monster; he is a force of nature. Because his scale dwarfs standard characters, he is best treated as a "Vehicle/Titan" archetype.
This blog entry picks up from Godzilla from the Monsterverse Movies for Cepheus Engine Rpg Including Radiation Sickness Rules, and Protection for classic 2d6 Science Fiction GameS

Rodan, The Fire Demon

Rodan is essentially immune to infantry-scale weaponry (lasers, slugthrowers). Treat his hide as having high Damage Reduction (DR). Only Heavy Ordnance (ship-mounted weapons, missiles, or specialized kaiju-tech) can reliably penetrate his armor.

CharacteristicValueNotes
STR80Immense mass and kinetic energy.
DEX10Unnaturally agile for his size.
END60Can survive volcanic interiors.
INT4Instinct-driven, predatory intelligence.
  • Armor (Natural Hide): 20

  • Melee Attacks:

    • Talons/Beak: 8d6+15 damage.

  • Special Abilities:

    • Sonic Boom (AoE): By flying at supersonic speeds near the ground, Rodan creates a shockwave. This functions as an area-of-effect attack dealing 4d6 damage to all structures and organic targets within 100 meters of his flight path.

    • Volcanic Hide: Immune to fire and heat damage.

    • Flight: Rodan possesses a flight speed of Mach 3+.

    • Titan Scale: Small arms (TL 7-12) deal zero damage unless a Critical Hit (Effect 6+) is rolled with a heavy weapon.

GM Tactics & Encounter Advice

Rodan is a glass cannon compared to Godzilla—he is extremely fast and aggressive, but he does not have the sheer regenerative endurance of the other Titans.

  1. The "Flyby" Strategy: Don't have him land immediately. Use the Sonic Boom ability to soften up player fortifications or vehicles. Rodan should be a hit-and-run nightmare, not a stationary boss.

  2. Environment Hazard: In the Monsterverse, Rodan carries intense heat. Standing within 50 meters of him should force an END check to avoid heat exhaustion or damage every round.

  3. Managing the Scale: If your players try to fight him with personal weapons, emphasize the futility. Their laser rifles will just scorch his scales; he won't even notice them unless they manage a "lucky hit" on an eye or a sensitive membrane. He should feel like a moving disaster, not a standard combatant.

To make vehicle or starship weapons feel effective against a Titan-class threat like Rodan without breaking your existing campaign balance, you need to convert Personal Scale damage to Vehicle Scale (often called Starship Scale in Cepheus).

The easiest method is to use a 10:1 scaling factor.

1. The 10:1 Scaling Rule

In Cepheus Engine, vehicle and starship weapons are designed to punch through hardened hulls. To reflect this against Rodan:

  • Multiply Titan Armor by 0.1: Rodan’s Personal Scale Armor of 20 becomes Vehicle Scale Armor 2.

  • Divide Personal Scale Damage by 10: If a player somehow shoots Rodan with a heavy infantry weapon dealing 30 points of damage, it only inflicts 3 points of damage at the Vehicle Scale.

  • Keep Vehicle Damage As-Is: Standard vehicle and starship weapons roll their listed damage directly against Rodan's scaled armor.

2. Vehicle Weapon Conversion Table

Here is how common Cepheus Engine heavy weapons interact with Rodan using this scale:

Weapon TypeTypical DamageEffective vs. Rodan?Tactical Notes
Autocannon (Light)2d6 VehicleYesConsistent damage; strips away his health slowly.
Heavy Missile1d6 $\times$ 10 VehicleExtremelyHigh burst damage. Perfect for forcing him to retreat.
Plasma/Fusion Gun (Vehicle)1d6 $\times$ 5 VehicleYesBypasses some armor, but Rodan is highly fire-resistant.
Laser Cannon (Starship)1d10 VehicleYesHigh accuracy, great for hitting him at supersonic speeds.

The Fire Demon Exception: Because Rodan is born from a volcano, reduce all damage from Plasma, Fusion, or Flamethrower vehicle weapons by 50%, even after scaling. Kinetic weapons (autocannons, missiles) and lasers work normally.

3. Modifying the Damage Track

Instead of giving Rodan thousands of Personal Scale hit points, give him a Vehicle Structure Track.

Give Rodan 60 Structure Points (derived from his 60 END).

  • Lightly Wounded (45-59 Structure): No mechanical effect. He is enraged.

  • Wing Damaged (30-44 Structure): Flight speed drops to Mach 1. DEX drops to 6.

  • Grounded (15-29 Structure): Cannot fly. Forced to fight on land.

  • Retreating/Defeated (0-14 Structure): Rodan flies away to hibernate or crashes.

Using this system, a single hit from a Heavy Missile (averaging 35 damage) won't instantly kill him, but it will severely injure him and change his behavior, making the players feel powerful without making the Titan look weak.

Godzilla from the Monsterverse Movies for Cepheus Engine Rpg Including Radiation Sickness Rules, and Protection for classic 2d6 Science Fiction Games

Here is a stat block and breakdown for Godzilla, adapted for the Cepheus Engine (and classic 2D6 sci-fi roleplaying systems).Because the Monsterverse Godzilla is an apocalyptic, 100,000-ton titan, his physical stats go far beyond the standard human scale. He is treated as a unique, planet-shaping threat.

Godzilla, Titanus Gojira

Plaintext
Animal: Titan (Apex Predator)
Mass: 90,000 metric tons
Habitat: Open Ocean / Subterranean Hollow Earth

STR: 50 (+12) DEX: 06 (+0) END: 60 (+15) INT: 04 (-1) EDU: 00 (-3) SOC: 00 (-3)

Skills: Athletics-2, Melee (Unarmed)-4, Survival-4

Armor: 40 (Bio-nuclear hide)
Wounds: 500 (Massive Scale)

Attacks

  • Crushing Stomp / Tail Swipe: Melee, Damage: 6D6 x 10 (Vehicle Scale).

  • Atomic Breath: Ranged (Extreme), Damage: 2D6 x 50 (Starship Scale). Requires 1 round to charge (dorsal plates glow bright blue). Inflicts intense radiation in a 500-meter radius around the blast zone.

Special Traits

  • Massive Scale: Human-scale weapons (pistols, rifles) cannot damage Godzilla; their damage is reduced to 0. Heavy vehicle or starship-scale weapons damage him normally, subtracting his Armor rating first.

  • Amphibious: Godzilla breathes underwater, swims at high speeds (up to 40 knots), and suffers no penalties for aquatic combat.

  • Bio-Nuclear Sustenance: Godzilla feeds directly on radiation. If targeted by nuclear weapons or fission-based starship weapons, he does not take damage; instead, he completely restores his Wounds and enters an "Overcharged" state, doubling the damage of his next Atomic Breath attack.

  • Territorial Instinct: He automatically senses other Titan-class entities within a planetary radius.

Running Godzilla in your Campaign

Godzilla works best not as a standard monster to fight in initiative rounds, but as an environmental disaster or a moving plot device.

  • The "Kaiju" Scale: If characters are in a standard starship or a heavy planetary tank, they can attempt to distract or annoy him. If they are on foot, their only viable action is the Survival skill to flee the collapsing infrastructure.

  • Collateral Damage: Every round Godzilla moves through an urban center, assume any building in his path takes automatic structural destruction. Characters inside must make an Average (8+) DEX or Athletics check to avoid taking falling debris damage (3D6).

In the Cepheus Engine (and traditional 2D6 sci-fi roleplaying), radiation is tracked using rads (radiation absorbed dose). It accumulates over time and directly attacks a character's physical characteristics.

Here is how radiation exposure, tracking, and sickness work:

1. Exposure and Accumulation

Whenever a character enters a radioactive area (like a nuclear wasteland, a breached starship reactor, or the wake of Godzilla's atomic breath), they absorb a specific number of rads per round, minute, or hour depending on the severity:

Environment SeverityRads Absorbed
Low (Leaking pipe, orbital background cosmic rays)1d6 rads per hour
Medium (Unshielded reactor room, solar flare)1d6 x 10 rads per minute
High (Direct nuclear blast zone, atomic breath wake)1d6 x 100 rads per round

Note: Standard armor offers no protection unless it is specifically rated for radiation or sealed environmental vacc suits (which typically absorb a set amount of rads before failing).

2. Radiation Sickness Thresholds

As rads accumulate in a character's body, they trigger progressive levels of radiation sickness. The effects are determined by the total cumulative rads currently absorbed:

  • 0–50 rads: No immediate symptoms.

  • 51–100 rads: Mild nausea and headache. Reduce all physical actions (attribute checks involving STR, DEX, or END) by -1.

  • 101–200 rads: Light radiation sickness. The character loses 1 point of END permanently until treated. All physical actions are at -2.

  • 201–400 rads: Severe radiation sickness. The character immediately loses 1d6 STR, 1d6 DEX, and 1d6 END. They suffer hair loss and internal bleeding.

  • 401–800 rads: Lethal dose range. The character loses 2d6 from all physical attributes. If any attribute hits 0, they fall into a coma.

  • 801+ rads: Absolute lethal dose. Incapacitation occurs within minutes; death follows within 1d6 hours.

3. Recovery and Treatment

Rads do not disappear on their own. Without medical intervention, the damage to attributes remains permanent.

  • Decontamination: The first step is scrubbing away radioactive particles. This requires an Easy (6+) Survival or Medic check to stop further accumulation from fallout clinging to gear or skin.

  • Anti-Rad Drugs: Standard TL9+ sci-fi medical kits contain anti-radiation drugs. Administering these requires an Average (8+) Medical check. A successful treatment flushes out 1d6 x 10 rads from the patient's system.

  • Attribute Restoration: Once a patient's total rad count is brought back down to 0, their damaged attributes will naturally heal at a rate of 1 point per attribute per day of complete bed rest.

ItemTLCostDescription & Stats
Anti-Radiation Drugs8Cr1,000A standard medical dose. Requires an Average (8+) Medical check to administer. A successful dose flushes 1d6 x 10 absorbed rads from the patient's system.
Panacea8Cr200A broad-spectrum cellular repair drug. While not as effective as pure anti-rad medication, it can be used to treat the symptoms of mild radiation sickness, halting the temporary physical attribute decay for 24 hours.

'The Godzilla vs Cthulhu' OSR Campaign Set Up Revised For Mutant Future

Tonight its been one of those nights where classic 50's, 60's,70's, & even the 90's giant  monster flicks have occupied my thoughts with the release of King Kong Vs Godzilla film material with the first look. There's a bit of a big reveal folks on the video below & I was throwing down with Dangerville folks. Major possible spoilers in the video for King Kong Vs Godzilla. As G fan its a great time to be waiting on the film.

Its been one of those days where I find myself drifting back to thoughts about Ishihara Gōjin the incredible children's artist & illustrator from Japan. Going back to 2011 & an article by Cyriaque Lamar on Gizmodo the incredible artwork of Ishihara Gōjin came my way. This stuff is just great for a resource for an old school or OSR giant monster campaign! This inner Earth world might be the actual source of both the strange radiations & giant mutant monsters of the Mutant Future rpg
Mutant Future: Revised Edition (no-art version ...

According to the article;  "Gōjin Ishihara's profoundly weird children's art. In 1969. a Japanese magazine published these exceedingly intense depictions of life at the center of our planet. Taking cues from Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Lost World, these drawings and diagrams are the strange remnants of some plesiosaur-filled fever dream."
These children's magazine artwork are like something that a nine year old would be dreaming up. These would be perfect fodder for a Gamma World or Mutant Future rpg campaign.

This is one of the most normal art pieces that I've seen. But the second one in the article is like something straight out of the classic Journey to the Center of Earth Verne book on steroids! And has a spin on the classic 'giant mushrooms at the center of the Earth trope.

There is so much going on here that it reminds me of the classic Eighties cartoon 'The  Inhumanoids!' The Evil That Lies Within' another creation from the mind of Flint Dille from Eighty Six a line of toys, comic books & a very dark cartoon. This property was balls to the walls nuts!

This is  especially the second piece of artwork which references the magnetic anomalies pf the Earth's poles & center of the Earth as giant magnetic generator! Better hand onto that hand gun & your air tanks!

things really start to heat up with the lava rivers & fiery monsters that is normal for the inner world! There is so much to unpack in this piece of artwork from the bone fields to the full on river rafting down the lava!

We get into the fire kaiju. salamander style mutant  antagonist in the final art piece that references both the Verne book 'Journey to the Center of the Earth'  & the classic Edgar  Rice Burroughs 'Pellucidar' stories! These elementally immune mutant monster species  reminds me of several Dungeons & Dragons monsters that we've seen over the years especially the  tarrasque. Those eggs pictured are going to be very valuable. But watch out for that hatchling!

The next piece we get into the actual layout & locations of the inner Earth featured in the magazine article prime pieces for the enterprising dungeon master who wants to use these adventure locations! We get a bit of a layout for the inner Earth's diagram & possible physical locations.

We get a Richer Shaver mystery style magnetic rail car system left over from the Ancients. This system seems incredibly dangerous to me & crosses the Earth at different points with the pictographs indicating a world spanning system.

Finally we get one a spin off of the Mahar splinter colony with a mutant shoggoth slaves/servants. This is one of the most dangerous areas that PC's could find themselves in! So there is a such a great deal of material that Ishihara Gōjin packs into his art & material.

So besides using Ishihara Gōjin's artwork as inspiration for an old school campaign there's lots of gaming inspiration & adventure influence that can be had here. Now besides the obvious Gamma World/Mutant Future campaign material here. What I would do is take Ishihara Gōjin's artwork & go that extra mile with it. I'd take AC9 'The Creature Catalog' & use that source of an Inner Earth campaign.

Add in Big Jim's P.A.C.K. which we covered last we & your ready to go with an off beat and very well done campaign jump off point. Take this whole cloth campaign & simmer with X1 'Isle of Dread' & your ready to run a complete campaign!
Quag Keep: D&D - X1: Isle of Dread

Add in a planar gate way or two to Carcosa & you've got one of the sources of every mutant monster & Kaiju induced mutation on planet Earth for ages to come! But let's say you want even more of a Lovecraftian tie in?! Well if we take Call of Cthulhu's 'Secrets of Japan' then we get a complete break down of Godzilla even though he isn't called Godzilla.

In fact this inner Earth sets up a complete Godzilla vs Cthulhu campaign setting from the ground up! We've got everything completely to explain every single Lovecraftian monster, mutant, and deviant from the ground up! This was a perfect set up from Famous Monsters of Filmland artwork by "Godzilla Vs. Cthulhu" artwork by Bob Eggleton!

Godzilla VS Cthulhu Poster - Captain Company

This is exactly where Goblinoid Games Realms of Crawling Chaos comes in very handy! The book literally can create scads of weird Lovecraftian relics & monsters at the drop of a hat! Really well done OSR book & perfect for just this sort of a campaign.

Through The Atomic Glass Darkly - Commentary On The Godzilla Extended Look Trailer For Your Old School Post Apocalyptic Campaign

The trailer has  great visuals, fantastic dialogue, and just about everything a Godzilla fan could want! But will it live up to the hype of this trailer? Only time will tell. But there are more then enough elements here to keep a DM busy! I've posted some thoughts about the first Godzilla Trailer HERE
This trailer really draws the Godzilla monster as an incredible force of nature. This is a monster that can not be dealt with, human reasoning fails and we are left with another possibility for our nuclear wastelands of the future of our imagination. This truly is a hearkening back to the giant monster pictures of the fifties with the volume turned up to eleven. Even the press release statement put out by Legendary Pictures says this:

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
—Legendary Pictures, in official press release
But where will this all lead? Are we on the verge of a new beginning so to speak?
File:Godzilla (2014) poster.jpg

Are we seeing the dawn of a new Dark Age and the ascension of Kaiju into the dominant species of this planet?
Naw... We're seeing one of the best new giant monster films to come out since Pacific Rim though. A film rife with gamible giant  monster old school goodness and a possible stepping stone into a great post apocalyptic campaign.

Many plot hooks are dangled in this new Godzilla film campaign and now more then ever I'm convinced that we've got a creature that goes all the way back to the Fifties in it's history. The change in clothing style from the nineteen Seventies of the main characters. There may be other giant monsters lurking right in plain sight. Could we be seeing the beginnings of a brand new set of giant monster pictures? If we look into the past of the original 1954 Godzilla films for some possible answers.  Here's the final design of the creature from the cover of Empire Magazine.

Godzilla in the 1954 movie was the great unknown force of nature, a shadow or ghost of the coming atomic age. This wasn't a force that could be stood against merely survived. The entire

Are there other giant monsters in the new Godzilla film?

Major Monster Spoilers Ahead!
 According To Wiki :

In October 2013, toy and collectible web sites offering pre-orders of merchandise for the film revealed aspects of the other creatures to appear in the movie. The other creatures are, as a group, known as "Mutos", with some having the ability to fly and being multi-limbed.[56]
In a January 2014 interview in Total Film magazine, it was revealed that Godzilla will be 350 feet (110 meters) tall. According to special effect chief Jim Rygiel, the mechanics of Godzilla's fighting style is based on the study of animals, primarily bearsand Komodo dragons.[8]
For Empire magazine's April 2014 issue, the magazine cover featured a picture of Godzilla, revealing the monster's design. According to director Edwards, elements of the faces of bears, dogs and eagles were incorporated into the design of Godzilla's face.[57] Motion capture by the special effects firm The Imaginarium was also utilized in the movement of the movie's monsters in film sequences.[57] According to director Edwards, Andy Serkis did motion capture sequences to "control the souls" of the creatures
There is a lot of information packed into the background supplied by several interviews and  bit and pieces from Empire magazine as well as other sources.
The bottom line is that from all indications this is a rebirth. A connection to other monsters and maybe a foreshadowing of a hook up with Pacific Rim?

Using The Godzilla Film As Basis For Your Old School
 Post Apocalyptic Campaigns

The day that Godzilla appeared everything changed

Imagine a humanity that is trying to cope with the on rush of  Kaijui and the devestation caused by such creatures as well as the smaller monsters spawned by the deadly alien energies of these creatures. The world would be forever changed but eventually mankind would have to adapt, study, and change to deal with such things.
The mutants, mutates, deviants, freaks, and things spawned by the ecosystems that we've seen in countless sci fi movies over the years are easily connected into the old school back doors of post apocapytic games. Gamma World, Mutant Future, Mutant Epoch, etc. all have the tools that allow a DM to not only create but plug into this new wave vibe of Godzilla spawned movies that may follow in the wake of  this incarnation of  Giant prehistoric mutated monstrous horrors stalking our screens.
Power armor, energy weapons, massive weapons, etc. might all be spawned and jump started by studying the kaiju up close. Using the enemy's own biological fingerprint as technological jump start would not only be necessary but vital to the survival of humanity.
Perhaps a Pacific Rim style future is a direct result of the appearance of such monsters. Could the energies released from such horrors awaken other monsters, ancient gods, and demons across the world?
If we look at the flocks of mutant monsters in the various post apocalyptic games one thing always stands out. They're evolution makes makes no biological sense. There is a very solid reason why such a thing is. That's because they didn't evolve but where left behind in the wake of the Kaiju. Each one of these walking forces of nature carries it's own toxic waste dump of creatures with it. That's right the monsters live in the skin, organs, etc. of the monsters. As they pass through the countryside they're leaving monsters, energy, and god knows what else in their wake.
Humanity and the animals of the local eco systems are going to be well and truly changed by the appearance of such monsters. The monsters are terra forming the Earth around them by their very appearance.  Each one of these things is an avatar of a new mother nature. This isn't a new formula but one that appeared in the original 1954 Godzilla and to a greater extent in Rodan. Then Gamera had similar submonsters. But there is more to the appearance of such creatures.
Could the mental mutations that appear in many classic post apocalyptic games be a direct result of the various alien energies that these horrors admit? Is the appearance of so many biological humanoid mutations a direct result of the pressures of the appearance of giant monsters?
To go further, could the appearance of the Kaiji be a signal that the stars are right. We know that from various games such as Call of Cthulhu and many others that there are alien cycles of history. Could the appearance of the monsters be simply a signal that our time is over?
Imagine an old school game of adventurers and mercenaries living and dealing with the shadow of giant monsters. Perhaps a combination of giant mecha, power armor, and relic weaponry might be the only edge such a group might have. A campaign where 'drifting' or a similar mental mutation allows the pilots to match the dexterity and lethality of such mutated giants.
The entire campaign might be moving from one safe vault to another as the giants stride the Earth and you are humanity's last hope.
Now imagine a campaign where the PC's are a village of slayers moving across the landscape in mecha trying to slay one of these beasties on a track  of destruction across the countryside.
What kind of effort would it take to dismantle and carve up one of these giant monsters? Imagine the haul it's carcass would bring in neo materials and artifacts. Think of this style of campaign in terms of the American Indian and the buffalo. No part would go to waste here. So to would the carcass of such a monster go to waste.
There would be a constant run for ammo, supplies, and man power to hunt and bring such horrors down. Not to mention the dooms day cults, the weird monsters lurking in the ruins, the psychic tracking of such beasties and the full on going trauma of going toe to toe with the greatest horrors to roam the Earth.

Commentary On The New International Godzilla Trailer And Your Old School Post Apocalyptic Campaigns

The newest trailer for Godzilla is out for the 2014 version is out and once again there are echoes of the 1954 movie running through it. One of the reasons is that we are reminded of when Gozilla was a fully realized force of nature. An atomic horror rampaging through the world bringing horror and devastation wherever it went.  This thing was a walking post apocalyptic wasteland on two legs and it had its own mutant ecosystem living within it. There were the trilobites living upon the original Godzilla and the whole idea was fully realized in the original Rodan movie. The original Rodan from 1956 had some interesting ideas and are my eyes fooling me or are we seeing a glimpse of a new Rodan in the newest Godzilla trailer toward the end?

Every time lately I see this new Godzilla trailer,I find myself looking into possibly planning a Mutant Future or old school post apocalyptic campaign where the monsters are the cause of a brand new dark age.
Mutant Future has had since its release a weird over lap with cheesy Saturday matinee sci fi movies from the Nineteen Fifties  through Seventies not helped at all by the likes of suppliments like the Free Devastation Drive in family of free material available right over HERE ( available right under the free download section)

Add to this fact that these monster unleash not only swaths of destruction but incredible energies of a dark sinister and mutating nature and you've got the makings for a dark and somewhat weird campaign of post apocalyptic madness.
Recently The Realms of Crawling Chaos book came out for Mutant Future. The book has the definitive Lovecraftian dark fantasy element to it going on which can easily be added to Mutant Future.

But what happens to the Earth after these engines of giant destruction lay waste to it? Mutants, horrors from beyond the stars, and worse are unleashed. But surely there can not be any old school classes that can help?
What if the arrival of giant monsters is also the alignment of the stars and the return of magic. Perhaps druids, elementalists, sorcerers, and  the rise of magic allows the Earth to use power of magic to help heal and terraform itself through the devastation. Add in the technological acceleration of giant monsters vs weird Pacific Rim style artifact technology and suddenly the relic technology found among the ruins isn't so weird. I know its not realistic but well you get the idea.
One thing that has always bothered me when I look at post apocalyptic gaming is the OD&D style cross overs. There has to be more to it then simply gonzo old school goodness. Add in the ecosystem changing gambit of the
Kaiju. Suddenly there's a whole other dimension of strangeness to the post apocalyptic trope.
 Have a few
Kaiju walk through a major city and suddenly those ruins, weird energy, mutated animals, and post apocalyptic set dressings are right there.

Recently I was reading One Year In The Savage Afterworld by Tim Sniderman for ideas and much of the material from his collection of adventure seeds and post apocalyptic data really seem to echo some of the vibes that I'm getting off of the new Godzilla trailer. Available right over -HERE Inside this crumbling tome is a collection of unique micro-adventures through a post-apocalyptic world! One Year In The Savage AfterWorld presents 52 "dangerous encounters" that originally appeared at The Savage AfterWorld!
I really think that the micro adventure formula is the way to introduce this style of old school post apocalyptic madness without committing to a full scale campaign!
Add in a few mythos inspired dooms day cults from Call of Cthulhu along with a list of half a dozen Giant Monster movies dating back to the fifties and your just about ready to go.

You can find that list of giant monster movies right over HERE
More Godzilla inspire post apocalyptic stuff coming up!

Commentary On The 1954/2014 Godzilla trailers And Your Old School Post Apocalyptic Campaigns

I started looking into the original Godzilla movie from 1954 after all the new Godzilla trailer and movie echoes it in both spirit and substance. There is a ton of stuff going on with the new movie that parallels the old 1954 classic.

Owen Gliberman sums up the movie quite well with the following:
In Entertainment Weekly, Owen Glieberman, who gave the film an A- rating, wrote:
"Godzilla, an ancient beast roused from the ocean depths and irradiated by Japanese H-bomb tests, reduces Tokyo to a pile of ash, yet, like Kong, he grows more sympathetic as his rampage goes on. The characters talk about him not as an enemy but as a force of destiny, a "god". The inescapable subtext is that Japan, in some bizarre way, deserves this hell. Godzilla is pop culture's grandest symbol of nuclear apocalypse, but he is also the primordial spirit of Japanese aggression turned, with something like fate, against itself.
Could this world ending agression not merely turn on itself but us as well? A sign of the times when a Godzilla is returned as an OSR force of nature. Call of Cthlhu may hold the answer for the beginning of a kick ass OSR campaign.
File:Godzilla '54 design.jpg

The 1954 trailer might be considered ancient history in this style of world. A place of eldrith horror and abominable legends that plump the deepest fears of mankind. For more on this,we need to look into the 1954 movie's history and its connection to the new movie.
Major Plot Spoiler ahead From Wiki :
When a Japanese fishing boat is attacked by a flash of light near Odo Island, another ship is sent to investigate only to meet the same fate, with only a few surviving. On Odo Island, a village elder blames their poor fishing on a sea monster known as "Godzilla" and recalls that in earlier times native girls were sacrificed to appease the giant sea monster. Word gets out and a helicopter arrives on the island with curious, but skeptical, reporters. Frightened natives perform a night-time ceremony to keep the monster away. However, that night, while the natives sleep, a storm arrives and something else comes with it, bringing death and destruction. A boy sees the cause during the midst of the destruction.
The next day, witnesses arrive in Tokyo. Archeologist Kyohei Yamane suggests that investigators be sent to the island. On arrival, Yamane finds giant radioactive footprints, and atrilobite. When an alarm sounds, the villagers arm themselves with sticks and various weapons and run to the hills, only to be confronted by Godzilla, who is revealed to be an enormous dinosaur-like creature. After a quick skirmish, the villagers run for safety and Godzilla heads to the ocean.
Yamane returns to Tokyo to present his findings and concludes that Godzilla was unleashed by a nuclear explosion. Some want to conceal that fact, fearing international repercussions. Others say the truth must be revealed. They prevail and Godzilla's origins are announced to the public. Ships are sent with depth charges to kill the monster. When that fails, Godzilla appears again, frightening patrons on a party boat, and causing nationwide panic. Officials appeal to Dr. Yamane for some way to kill the monster, but Yamane wants him kept alive and studied.
Meanwhile, Emiko, Yamane's daughter, decides to break off her arranged engagement to Yamane's colleague, Daisuke Serizawa, because of her love for Hideto Ogata, a salvage ship captain. Before she can do that, Serizawa tells her about his secret experiment. He gives a small demonstration, using a fish tank in the lab. Shocked, Emiko is sworn to secrecy and never gets a chance to break off the engagement. That night Godzilla climbs from Tokyo Bay and attacks the city. Though the attack is over quickly, there is much death and destruction. The next morning, the army constructs a line of 40-meter electrical towers along the coast of Tokyo that will send 50,000 volts of electricity through Godzilla, should he appear again. Civilians are evacuated from the city and put into bomb shelters. As night falls, Godzilla does indeed attack again. He easily breaks through the electric fence, melting the wires with his atomic breath. A bombardment of shells from the army tanks has no effect. Godzilla continues his rampage until much of the city is destroyed and thousands of civilians are dead or wounded. Godzilla descends unscathed into Tokyo Bay, despite a squadron of fighter jets' last-ditch attack.
The next morning finds Tokyo in ruins. Hospitals overflow with victims, including some with radiation poisoning. Witnessing the devastation, Emiko tells Ogata about Serizawa's secret Oxygen Destroyer, a device that disintegrates oxygen atoms and organisms die of asphyxiation, and that it accidentally created a new energy source. She hopes that the two can persuade Serizawa to use it to stop Godzilla. When Serizawa realizes Emiko has betrayed his secret, he refuses, and Ogata and Serizawa fight and Ogata receives a minor head wound. As Emiko treats Ogata's wound, Serizawa apologizes, but he refuses to use the weapon on Godzilla, citing the public bedlam his weapon could cause. Then a newscast shows the devastation Godzilla has caused. Choirs of children are shown singing a hymn. Finally realizing this, Serizawa decides he will use the weapon once and then its secret must be destroyed for the good of humanity. He then burns all his papers and research. Emiko breaks down and cries when she sees this, as she understands that Serizawa is sacrificing his life's work and himself to stop Godzilla.
A navy ship takes Ogata and Serizawa to plant the device in Tokyo Bay. They don diving gear and descend into the water, where they find Godzilla at rest. Ogata returns to the surface as Serizawa activates the device. Serizawa watches as Godzilla dies then tells Ogata to be with Emiko. At the cost of his own life, Serizawa cuts his own oxygen cord so his knowledge of the device cannot be used to harm mankind. A dying Godzilla surfaces, lets out a final roar, and sinks to the bottom before completely disintegrating.
Although the monster is gone, those aboard ship mourn the unexpected loss of Serizawa. Godzilla's death has come at a terrible price and Dr. Yamane believes that if mankind continues to test nuclear weapons, another Godzilla may appear again one day.
Which he will in 2014 and far beyond into the Shadow Years of Mutant Future.

Old School Gaming With The Big 'G'

One really nice write up for Godzilla that I've seen recently is the 2005 release from Chaosuim called Secrets of Japan.
This is a really well done book and Godzilla gets a pretty small two page write up but its a write up that reveals some pretty cool little OSR gems.

From RPG manufacture Chaosium Inc.'s highly successful Call of Cthulhu series its "Gazira," Japan's defender against unspeakable elder gods.  That's right Call of Cthhlu's Godzilla battled Lovecraftian gods and paid for it with unspeakable scars and horror left in the wake of those battles. Now imagine that its two hundred years from the Rise of the Old Ones and the battles with giant monsters.
If we start looking into the implications of this. There are some really weird possibilities for a central event that might have caused a post apocalyptic world shattering to happen. What would it be like suddenly if the 'Rise of The Old Ones' and the clash of giant monsters shattered a future world sending it back to the stone age. Suddenly, Mutant Future coupled with Realms of Crawling Chaos seems to be not only a viable OSR campaign but one many of the elements of Labyrinth Lord don't seem so far off.

Where might all of this lead? What possibilities might happen? Well one possibility might be the ideas laid down in Pacific Rim. Giant Robots vs Lovecraftian horror on a scale well beyond the pale of mortal man.
Surely there isn't a way to involve adventurers and treasure seekers into this equation. Well actually. Here's a chance to introduce your PC's into the giant monster black market.
In fact there has been talk about a crossover even though its only talk at this point. According to wiki :
At WonderCon 2013, Guillermo del Toro expressed enthusiasm for a potential crossover between Godzilla and del Toro's Pacific Rim—another Legendary Pictures kaiju film—but stressed that no such plans are in place.[113] In an interview at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, Edwards expressed an interest in making a sequel that uses the "Monster Island" concept used in Destroy All Monsters.[114]

These ideas are easily converted over to a post apocalyptic old school gaming as well as adventuring and even now folks are looking at playing this sort of campaign.
As always your mileage may vary.
