OSR Adventure Commentary - Using B10 Nights Dark Terror by Jim Bambra, Graeme Morris, and Phil Gallagher with Bloody Arduin & ACKS II Rpg

Running B10: Night’s Dark Terror using ACKS II (Adventurer Conqueror King System II) for core campaign/economic mechanics and layered with Bloody Arduin (ABA) for critical hits, gonzo magic, and raw lethality produces an unforgettable hybrid.

  • ACKS II supplies the simulationist spine, domain rules, campaign economy, and tactical mass-combat/siege framework.

  • Bloody Arduin injects visceral combat lethality, horrific critical damage, spell-point over-channeling, and bizarre pulp/dimensional flavor.

  • B10: Night’s Dark Terror acts as the narrative structure, transitioning characters from localized skirmishes up to domain-scale wilderness exploration.

1. System Integration Framework

ComponentACKS II RoleBloody Arduin (ABA) RoleApplication in B10
Combat & SavesAttack throws, Proficiency throws, Mortally Wounded tables.Critical hit/fumble tables, direct limb severing, shock, blood loss.Use ACKS II hit probabilities, but resolve natural 20s or severe HP depletion through Bloody Arduin’s brutal critical hit charts.
Magic SystemSpell repertoires, campaign ritual research, cross-breeding monsters.Mana Point / Spell-point over-channeling, spell corruption, strain.Casters use ABA Mana Pools to power ACKS II/B10 spells, allowing desperate over-casting at the cost of ABA physical strain or mutation.
Structure & DomainsHex-clearing rules, strongholds, siege engines, morale/loyalty, unit warfare.High-lethality encounter lethality, weird magic items, gonzo traps. The Siege of Sukiskyn and goblin raids use ACKS II war/tactical rules, while individual assaults carry ABA lethal consequences.

2. Converting B10 Modules & Set-Pieces

Act I: The Siege of Sukiskyn (Farmstead Defense)

  • ACKS II Siege Mechanics: Use ACKS II tactical combat for defending the farmstead. Track door/wall structural hit points and morale throws for defenders (Stephan, Pyotr) and goblins (Viper, Wolfskull tribes).

  • Bloody Arduin Lethality: Night assaults during the siege become terrifying. Fire arrows causing burning damage use ABA fire hazard rules, and goblin archers landing critical hits cause gruesome wounds that require ACKS II Field Medicine/Proficiencies or ABA magical healing to survive.

Act II: Wilderness Sandbox & Goblin Lairs

  • ACKS II Hex-Crawling: Map out the Black Peak Mountain foothills into 6-mile hexes using ACKS II wilderness travel rates, encumbrance, foraging, and supply tracking.

  • Petrified Forest & Dymrak Forest:

    • Replace standard goblin/orc stats with ACKS II tactical monster stats, but give leaders ABA-style exotic equipment (e.g., alien alchemy vials, bleeding weapons).

    • The Iron Ring Slaves & Slavers: Slaver patrols act as structured ACKS II military units.

Act III: Xitaqa & The Lost Valley of Hutaaka

  • Hutaakan Lore & ABA Micro-Cosmology: Enhance the ancient jackal-headed Hutaakans from simple B10 humanoids into an ancient, dimensional-nexus civilization (quintessential Arduin style).

  • The Tapestry / Golden Thread Map: Finding the Hutaakan tapestry uses ACKS II Magical Research / Investigation proficiencies.

  • The Cult of Pflarr: The clerics of Pflarr use ACKS II divine spell repertoires infused with ABA Mana Point rituals and horrifying necrotic curses.

3. Key Conversion Rules & Mechanics

Combat & Critical Hits

  1. Attack Rolls: Roll d20 against ACKS II Ascending AC.

  2. Critical Hits: On a Natural 20, roll on the Bloody Arduin Critical Hit Table based on weapon type (Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeoning, Magic).

  3. Downed Characters: When a PC hits 0 HP, apply the ACKS II Mortally Wounded table modified by any direct structural limb destruction from Bloody Arduin criticals.

Magic & Mana Points

  • Mana Pool: Max Mana = (Casting Stat Modifier + Level) x ACKS II Spell Tier Factor.

  • Over-Channeling: PCs can cast spells beyond their remaining Mana by drawing from Constitution/Hit Points, triggering a roll on the Bloody Arduin Spell Strain / Backfire Chart.

Domain Play & Mass Warfare

  • Sukiskyn & Beyond: If PCs defeat the Iron Ring, they can use ACKS II Domain Rules to claim and clear the surrounding hexes, build a fortified base at Sukiskyn or Xitaqa, and establish trade routes down the river to Kelven.

4. Example Campaign Progression (Levels 1–6)

  1. Levels 1–2 (Sukiskyn Siege & Local Raids): Gritty, high-lethality survival. Players rely heavily on tactical cover, traps, and ABA Mana over-channeling in emergencies.

  2. Levels 3–4 (Wilderness Hunt & Xitaqa): Hex-crawling across the Black Peaks using ACKS II wilderness rules. Encounters with Werewolves, Loshad the Horse Spirit, and Iron Ring strongholds.

  3. Levels 5–6 (Valley of Hutaaka & Domain Conquest): Unlocking the Lost Valley, fighting/negotiating with Hutaakan cults, and using ACKS II domain mechanics to secure the region against Iron Ring retaliations.

Here is a custom 2d10 / d100 Wilderness & Special Encounter Table tailored for the wilderness hexes of B10: Night’s Dark Terror (the Radlebb Woods, River Volaga, and the foothills leading to the Lost Valley of Hutaaka), infused with classic Arduin Grimoire gonzo lethality, weird magic, and technological remnants, while retaining full compatibility with ACKS II stat structures.

Arduin-Style Wilderness Encounter Table (2d10 Table)

To capture Arduin’s non-linear probability curve, roll 2d10 (generating a range of 2–20). Common regional threats land in the middle (10–12), while bizarre, lethal, or campaign-altering anomalies lie at the extreme ends (2 & 20).

Arduin Special Hazards & Critical Integration

When using this table in your B10 sessions, apply these two Arduin-style overlay rules to heighten tension:

1. The Arduin Critical / Blunder Trigger

  • Whenever any creature or player rolls a Natural 20 during an encounter generated by this table, roll on the Arduin Critical Hit Chart (e.g., severed limbs, shattered armor, decapitation).

  • Whenever a Natural 1 is rolled, roll on the Arduin Fumble Table (e.g., weapon shatters, spell backfires on ally, falls prone into hazards).

2. ACKS II Loot & Domain Scaling

  • Syndicate Clues: Any Iron Ring encounter (5, 14) awards +10% progress toward discovering an Iron Ring Hideout hex in your ACKS II campaign map.

  • Domain Value: Defeating top-tier threats (15, 17, 19) permanently cleanses the hex, raising the land's Domain Security Rating and increasing potential ACKS II land value/settlement revenue.
