Debuting in Ace Magazines’ Super-Mystery Comics Vol. 1 #1 (July 1940), The Clown (actor/playwright Michael Cray) is one of the Golden Age's most unique public domain vigilantes. After witnessing a tragic gangland crime, Cray designs a ghastly, colorful clown costume to strike psychological terror into the underworld. Relying on master-level acrobatics, theatrical misdirection, physical brawl, and hidden trick gadgets rather than true superpowers, he wages a one-man war on crime. This blog post picks right up from OSR NPC's - The Death Battlalion For The Victorious Rpg & The Red Room's Belle Epoque Rpg
Here is how to bring The Clown to life in both Troll Lord Games’ Victorious (d20 SIEGE Engine) and The Red Room’s Belle Époque (d6 MicroRed Engine).
1. The Clown for Victorious (Troll Lord Games)
In the SIEGE Engine framework, Michael Cray functions as an Infiltrator / Vigilante (Hero). He balances acrobatic mobility, theatrical fear tactics, and non-lethal street-level combat.

DEX: 18 (+3) [Prime]

WIS: 16 (+2) [Prime]
CHA: 17 (+2) [Prime]
Superpowers, Devices & Skills
Acrobatic Mastery (Rank 3 Skill/Knack): Adds +3 to Armor Class when unencumbered. Gains a +4 bonus on Dexterity checks for vaulting, leaping across rooftops, slipping restraints, and balancing on high-wires.
Theatrical Fear Visage (Rank 2 Fear Effect): When popping out from shadows in full greasepaint and clown regalia, foes must pass a Wisdom Saving Throw against a Challenge Base of 16 or be rattled with fear (-2 penalty to attack rolls and checks for 1d4 rounds).
Trick Gadgetry (Devices):
Sneeze Powder & Smoke Grenades: Creates a 10-ft radius cloud forcing targets to pass a Constitution save or suffer a -2 penalty to perception and attack rolls for 1 round.
Weighted Jester’s Cane: Deals 1d6 bludgeoning damage and grants a +2 bonus to disarm/trip maneuvers.
Stage Acting & Voice Mimicry (Rank 3 Skill): Receives a +3 bonus on Charisma checks to disguise his voice, imitate officials, or project vocal illusions around a room.
Shortcoming
Theatrical Compulsion: Cray cannot resist dramatic flair. He will often give villains a fair warning, drop a theatrical rhyme, or put on a show before striking, preventing him from gaining surprise benefits in extended combats.
2. The Clown for Belle Époque (MicroRed Engine)
In the d6-based Belle Époque setting, Michael Cray is reframed as a Parisian mime, circus acrobat, or grand-guignol performer who dons terrifying greasepaint to protect the common folk from corrupt elites, organized crime rings, and street gangs (Apaches).

Slight of Hand Trickery: Uses smoke vials, blinding powders, and cane hooks to disarm opponents or break combat line-of-sight without incurring opportunity attacks on a successful Subterfuge check.
Scenario & GM Usage
Plot Hook: "The Final Bow at the Boulevard"
A syndicate of crooked property developers and gang leaders are burning down working-class theaters and tenements along the Boulevard du Crime in Paris (or an equivalent theater district).
The Player Characters are tracking down the arsonists when they spot a figure in brightly colored silk tights and ghastly clown face paint swinging from a stage rope, snatching the syndicate's ledger directly out of the mob boss's hands. The PCs must decide whether to help this eccentric vigilante escape the police cordon or compete with him to bring down the arson ring.
