1d20 Random Weird Space Treasures Table For Venger Satanis's 'Cha'alt or Alpha Blue Rpg System For Your Your Old School Campaigns - Updated

There are many treasures in the depths of interstellar space and between the planes, things that are better left not found actually by the unsteady hands of adventurers and outlaws in the depths of space. Things and relics that are often used to pay the usual rabble of facilitators and shape shifting hookers.

For more powerful or dangerous Alpha Blue adventures allow PC's to roll once on the table below for a minor relic to use for adventuring.

1d20 Random  Weird Space Treasures Table

  1. The golden gallbladder of Emperor Po, this object enables the owner to purify 40 pounds of air and water almost instantly once a day but the thing weighs twenty pounds and seems to get heavier each time its used. Worth 60,000 bucks it currently has been MIA for six years after being stolen by Vermont Smith who thought it belonged in a museum and not storage unit of a space hooker.
  2. The artificial diamond of Virgin Purpose  was once owned by the Holy Order of Manhood part of the church of Orthodox  Pure Aggression. The item is cursed and tortures its owner with visions and partially real androids of these visions only to make them impotent and powerless in these visions presence. The owner can and will fly into a berserk rage when going into battle as these visions drive them to the edge of sanity and beyond.
  3. The ring of Ta'rdfu this ring uses alien super science to bath its target's in strange colours from beyond the spectrum of reality. They may 10% try to commit suicide as the soul crushing realizations of the greater dimensional reality come crashing in on them.
  4. The sword of no when beautifully gilded and jeweled alien sword can mystically cut the cord between a body and soul. This relic has been used as a clever method for murder several times throughout the centuries.
  7. Pressure gun - This weird and futuristic weapon projects a beam of energy within a twenty foot range of this weapon creating a micro dimensional gate pressure wave that does 3d6 +1 points of damage as the first two inches are warped or changed. The problem is that this isn't an illusion at all and it try to eat the victim and possibly the owner.

OSR Commentary - The Adventurer, Conqueror, King, Rpg, Wretched Space, &.... Cha'alt The Fosaken Sinkhole Of Evil

So last night late the cover of Adventurer,Conqueror, King's rule book was staring at me & over the last day or so as has Wretched Space.  And because we've been running the Cha'altverse lately. There occurs to me the idea from the ACK's rule book in the appearance  of 'sinkholes of evil'. These have to do with dungeon locations & places of pure evil according to the ACK's rule book page 253; "Some campaigns feature places that are corrupted by the energies of the Nether Darkness. In ACKS these are known as sinkholes of evil. Profane powers and undead creatures are stronger there, while the divine and the living are weakened. Sinkholes of evil can develop anywhere that death and decay predominate. Sinkholes of evil can be shadowed, blighted, or forsaken. The table below summarizes the effects of the various types of sinkholes of evil."

With the appearance of the Beyond within  Wretched Space these are perfect areas for sinkholes of evil from ACK's  rule book page 253;"SINKHOLES OF EVIL Some campaigns feature places that are corrupted by the energies of the Nether Darkness. In ACKS these are known as sinkholes of evil. Profane powers and undead creatures are stronger there, while the divine and the living are weakened. Sinkholes of evil can develop anywhere that death and decay predominate. Sinkholes of evil can be shadowed, blighted, or forsaken. The table below summarizes the effects of the various types of sinkholes of evil. Shadowed Sinkholes Shadowed sinkholes develop from two sources of corruption: Chaotic altars (such as those in evil shrines, temples, or churches) and places of death (such as cemeteries, catacombs, and battlegrounds). Chaotic altars create shadowed sinkholes as soon as they are erected. The size of the shadowed sinkhole around the altar will be 100 square feet per 100gp spent on the altar. For instance, a 10,000gp altar would create a 100' x 100' shadowed sinkhole around the altar. At the Judge’s discretion, meeting the gp value of the altar might require special components or blood sacrifices (as described in Chapter 7 under Magic Research) instead of standard treasure. Places of death create shadowed sinkholes naturally over time. The annual percentage chance of such an area becoming shadowed is equal to number of dead interred in the area divided by the area’s size in square feet, rounded up. For instance, a small 50' x 50' cemetery with 25 graves has a 1% chance of becoming shadowed each year. An enormous cemetery such as the realworld Wadi Al Salam (5 million dead across 64 million square feet) has an 8% chance of becoming shadowed each year. Once the shadowed sinkhole develops, the size of the shadowed sinkhole will be 100 square feet per 20 dead interred in the place. However, a sinkhole of evil will not develop if the dead are cremated by a Lawful divine spellcaster, or if one or more shrine(s) to Lawful powers are erected on the site. The Lawful shrine(s) must have a gp value of at least 5gp per dead interred in order to prevent the area from becoming shadowed."
These 'sink holes of evil' are literally scattered across the universe within  Wretched Space as ancient alien sorcerers & dark wizards have taken advantage of the carnage of ancient  interstellar wars and conflicts.

All of these add into the fact that humans are still the 'johnny come latelies' to the interstellar scene within Wretched Space. Or at least our version of it.
And that version contains Cha'alt & that's where things get interesting. Because Cha'alt is literally a 'Forsaken Sinkhole ala page 254; "Forsaken Sinkholes A blighted area might, through some awful juxtaposition of the planes or terrible ritual magic, become forsaken. Forsaken sinkholes are pits of darkness where the vilest creatures and foulest magic are found. Such places are very rare (Judge’s discretion). Corpses in forsaken areas have an 80% chance to return as undead in 1d4 rounds unless their bodies are burned. Chaotic spellcasters who cast reversed (evil) divine spells or necromantic spells in a forsaken sinkhole calculate the spell effects as if the casters were two class levels higher than their actual level of experience. Lawful divine spellcasters cast spells as if they were two class levels lower for purposes of spell effects, and may not turn undead. Any undead in forsaken areas gain a +2 bonus to attack throws, saving throws, damage rolls, and AC. Characters performing necromancy (described in Chapter 7) in a blighted sinkhole gain a +3 bonus to their magic research throws. Any undead created in forsaken areas gain a permanent +2 hit point per Hit Die, and animate dead spells cast in forsaken sinkholes create twice the normal number of Hit Dice of undead. A forsaken sinkhole can be used for blood sacrifice."
And on our version of Cha'alt this is exactly what the alters are used for!

Our version of Cha'alt is literally a forsaken sinkhole with it's shadow looming in the beyond like a beacon of Eldritch evil. This is why so many sorcerers & dark wizards come from Cha'alt in our campaigns.

By the time we've gotten to the era of  Wretched Space Cha'alt cast's its shadow into our reality causing the dark magical forces to roil against the walls of interstellar space.

Return of the Clown! - Cha'alt, Wretched Space, Wretched Flesh, and even LoFP's Carcosa As Adventurer, Conqueror, King Rpg Campaign Focus

So let's pick up right from where we left off last week on the blog here. And just before we ended the game the PC's found one of their hirelings killed off by a xenomorph emerging from the stomach of the poor bastard! And there was clown paint all over the place! That means that Bazo The Clown is back! There is a ton of history between the PC's & the demonic clown bastard!

It's been a very busy day to say the least & we're only now getting together. Tonight's game pits our 'heroes' against the forces of darkness. Bazo The Clown is back & the PC's are seeking hirelings to help them track down the demonic clown. And so their going to Cantina Incel to grab some hirelings to deal with the murderous demonic clown. Upp'thoth is a true Carcosan sorcerer who has worked with our party before. Uppo'thoth is a refuggee from Carcosa & a mutant to boot with left hands with seven fingers and green gold eyes. The dark sorcerer has spells wither flesh, & essential salts always at the ready. He along with his partner were a part of the same murder circus ages back which Bazo was a part of. Groth the Ghoul Jester is also known as Death's Jester is a particularly nasty customer & bodyguard to Uppo'thoth. He's been key in solving several murder investigations that the PC's have been involved with. As a ghoul he can eat the brains of the murder victim & gain the knowledge they had in life. This is done through a familial occult ritual passed on from other members of Groth's family. The hirelings departed the service of the party after the player's PC's departed to take

This leaves the PC's with some bad blood between them & their former hirelings who killed off several rogue desert ghouls were trying to murder the PC's several games ago. The PC's also have to deal with the members of the cult of Karen that they've slayed on this side of Cha'alt atr the Crimson Rock of Sacrifice.

And then there's the siren call of the black pyramid too boot. The PC's have a ton of unfinished business there. Did I mention the fact that the PC's are wanted criminals in the city of Ja'alette?! Because they have a death sentence the for totally taking out a city official there! This is why they fled to other side of Cha'alt.
The ghoul race & several other campaign factors totally come from Lost Carcosa by Tristan Tanner available on Drivethturprg here.  This book contains an alternative OSR Carcosa setting that can easily be used with almost any OSR campaign.

Bazo The Clown is known in our Wretched Space campaign as a murderous & nasty demonic clown of uncertain Lovecraftian pedigree. He's popped up randomly murdered several outlaw NPC contacts & PC relatives. Generally he's made a murderous nuaucince of himself over the last six months or so. Bazo has also appeared in other OSR game campaigns taunting the players with random murders & mayhem

A Piece of the Action - Cha'alt, Wretched Space, Wretched Flesh, and even LoFP's Carcosa As Adventurer, Conqueror, King Rpg Campaign Focus

The head cold has been kicking my ass on Sunday. So with several game sessions cancelled I've been stuck in bed most of Sunday. But I've been thinking about a question that has been bugging me with Cha'alt, Wretched Space, Wretched Flesh, and even LoFP's Carcosa. 'What would happen upon Earth if these Lovecraftian interstellar locations were real', not so much common knowledge as specialty knowledge among the occult & corporate circles. Yes I do realize that these are completely gonzo locations. But taking them completely seriously has led to some interesting situations at the table top. The player's PC's are heavily involved in a Fury Race in last week's Cha'alt/Wretched Space campaign. Here's what's been happening the players are plotting to take over New Albuquerque. And the question came up last week.

Back on Earth the realities of these Lovecraftian interstellar locations are mere rumor & myth except among the alien smoke filled taverns, the silent meeting places of occultists, and black cyberspace of some hackers. Carcosa is the world where the damned  & the lost end up. Cha'alt is an alien opportunity for some spacers & is mostly known only to spacers, the megacorporations, and the mad. The Earth of Wretched Space rpg is where these locations get talked about. That Earth is an rpg setting within it's own right however. What I've actually done is to dig out the  Adventurer, Conqeuror, King, rpg & the Barbarian Conquerors of Kanahu  supplement specificially. The majority of the PC classes, rules, etc. allow me as a DM to get the machinery of a take over of certain Cha'alt locations into the works.

The players want a piece of the action & their either going to get it or get killed taking that piece. There are however certain issues that have cropped up. Such as the fact that back on Earth several of the player's PC's interests will either increase or suffer as a result of such a take over. But what does this actually mean?! It means that certain locations are key to the business ventures & risks that they want to take such as having an alliance with the Santa Fe Starport. They done business there during several key events. And want to deal with the cult infecting New Albuquerque.
They are bound to get more then a few of the wastelander gangs under their banner to help ferment the first part of their plan. Their current Blackguard space pirate adventurers group has more then the numbers to help them pull this off.
The two gladiators that we've got in the party have migrated from being straight up warriors to being psionic warriors who have gotten augmented with psychic drug treatments. The Blackguard have also cleared several minor dungeons giving them a taste for treasure, women, and pillaging. Make no mistake this is an 'adult' campaign even though our youngest player is twenty nine. She is far more vicious then the older more experience players I've found. The players may take over New Albuquerque but after doing research into chaos with a capital 'C' in ACK's. It's my determination that beastmen with a wide variety of mutations are going to be in the player's future.

Wretched Flesh & Wretched Space both offer several PC options such as psionics & ritual magick & more that is perfect to slot into Cha'alt & BCK. The weird mutants & more within the Wretch rpg line has been a Lovecraftian god sent in a way. Thus  allowing me to keep the B/X D&D vibe while using the  OSR creations of the Red Room.

Foot loose In The city of A’agrybah - White Star Galaxy Edition & Cha'alt Session Report #1

During last night's White Star Galaxy Edition game session  my 1st level pilot Hermes Tralley went up two levels in last night's game as our party confronted a whole nest of galactic scum. Our party are members of the SS Raider a modified Spacelinker salvage ship. We spread out in the city keeping in constant communication because of the criminal nature  of the city. No way were we going to get blindsided by the city of A’agrybah.

We were on Cha'alt to recover the body & space yacht belonging to the owner of the Tirus corporation. He had crashed out in the desert outside of A'agrybah  after buying an illegal cargo from Elysium. The locals haven't touched the shipwreck because of the sand worms. The wreck is five hundred miles from the 'black pyramid'. We're supposed to meet our Cha'alt contact who had the maps that we needed. Our party found our contact alright with his throat slashed & the bloody claw print on the chest of the victim! The deodanth bounty hunters of 'the Black Blood' clan had struck! They murdered the victim in cold blood & left the maps behind to bate the PC's.

Deodanth artwork found on twitter!

As soon as we left the apartment we were attacked by street scum! Blaster fire was exchanged & our party made short work of the street scum & made it out of the ambush quite intact thanks to our star knights. And the alien mystic we had in reserve. We decided to make contact with the illegal underground gods market in the city of A’agrybah. The Deodanths would stick out like a sore thumb & we also wanted to check on any illegal murders of local Cha'alt elves. The next thing we wanted to do was check in with the local crime syndicates & information networks. We might be staying on Cha'alt longer then expected.

Don't Touch That Dial - Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland rpg - 'The Carcosa Slaughter Tour ' Session report one

The group of adventurers were looking long & low in the tooth. Even Skuzz the neon mohawked mutie  warrior  was looking a bit haphazardly. The party of adventurers had been fighting almost none stop for three days across the wasteland. Narrowly escaping several cults that wanted to sacrifice them to alien gods and god knows what else. St. Stallone the cyborg knight was getting a bit fried.
'Pssst!' 'Are you guys waiting for an invitation?! Get in here!' the young blue skinned boy wore an Eighty five 'Goonies never say die' tee shirt. St. Stallone's eyes narrowed at the boy and the opening that had appeared in the ruined wall they were hiding behind.
'Who in the Neon Hells are you kad?'
'Valentine a devotee of Lord Randy!'
'Get in here the Germans are coming back!'
'Wait, the who?!'
Silently across the multiverse some dramatic music played & three way too slim fingers began to release levers marked 'one', 'two', & 'three'. Three incredibly dangerous looking robotic mecha marched onto the battlefield sporting  the War Ensign of the German Empire from 1903-1919!
The spineless demonic thing across the multiverse laughed while chuckling to itself, 'How's that for a plot twist!' Muhahaha 'I'm a genius! I really I'm!'

Ages ago when we were running Geoffery McKinney's Carcosa. I DM'ed an alternative WWII Nazi escape to Carcosa game mini campaign. Alright so everyone's going to expect this coming up in this weekend's Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland rpg. But I want to do something different this time and with our sessions picking right up from this blog entry here.

Yes there's a meteor streaking into the world we still need a good villain & I've got Commander  Hans Goring Hemaller leader of the German mecha corps from German Intergalactic  Empire. A rather nasty tyrannical & dangerous leader of his panzer corps of mecha whose been stuck on this world. Mojo promises to return him to his Earth if he destroys the PC's.

Commander Hans has got an 3 Magog Alternative Armies mech's under his command along with numerous other smaller armors to throw at the PC's. And as far as Hans is concerned this is simply another mission.

How did the Germans in an alternative World War I get a hold of Ion Age mecha?! Well I ordered a few pieces from Noble Knights. But if your referring to the Earth that Commander Hans is from?! Well this is interdimensional cable so we can do anything! Han's Thule wizards have been in contact with that creepy ass clown of  Venger's 'Saving Cha'alt' as mini campaign adventure center piece. Now in the past I've been accused of DMing gonzo adventures and campaigns. And this is actually very true. But when it comes to this campaign things are moving along quite nicely. The biggest problem that we've had is getting everyone's work schedule to work out.

Zargon's Wraith - B4 'The Lost City' By Tom Moldvay & Venger Satanis's Revelry in Torth

One of the things that's worked out in the past that one of my players reminded me of last night is the fact that while the PC's are staying in Omar's house. They may want to get back into B4 'The Lost City' By Tom Moldvay. And yes that's right we set the lost city as a backdoor dungeon into the black pyramid of Cha'alt. Which is kind of the point because parts of Cha'alt is a bit of homage to B4.

'So one of the controlling families of royals for operations on Cha'alt is the royals from Torth?!' Those guys owe us big time!'
The most interesting bit was when the players mentioned the royal family of Torth & what might happen when the dragons arose there?! Bare in mind that we haven't gamed on Torth for almost a year now. Torth is of course from Venger Satanis's Reverly in Torth and the last time the PC's were hired by the royal family of Torth to retrieve Prince Silvus the III from the cult of
the underground Cynidiceans. The party  did eventually find him partying it up with the followers of Zargon. The party of adventurers  managed to get him back home after tossing a priest to Zargon.

After stepping across the planar gateway onto Torth the party was almost ambushed by a devil sand squid on their way back to Aryd's End! They were determined to party after a successful 'snatch & grab' mission. And now they want to collect on that reward. Cha'alt & Torth are ying & yang celestial & planar locations in my campaigns. One is always desert night & the other is blasting desert day! There's a third power interested in destroying the party folks & that's Zargon itself! Zargon didn't take kindly to our party of adventurers tossing one of his priests into his maw. That prince that the party um 'saved' was implanted with an embryo of Zargon & he's arisen as a Cthulhu dragon hybrid monster in regards to the fifth age of Torth's fifth age.

The Mindflayer Dragon hybrid mini  from Monster Mayhem is what we've got in mind for the prince of Torth.

So while the party is at Omar's the assassins from the Cult of Zargon are on their way to deliver a 'gift' or two to them. Much of this comes from the Vaults of Pandius's ' The Dungeon Master's Guide to Cynidicea A rules supplement for use in any Mystara Campaign'. And yes I know we're not using Mystara but bare with me here. The party is going to have to go back to Torth coming up to deal with the mess left behind.

Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland rpg - 'The Carcosa Slaughter Tour ' Now With More Cha'alt

Awesome Rick looked around at the strange neon coloured humanoids around his feet. 'Do we know who any of these guys are?!' 'Nope but the wasteland around here is really weird!',  Lisa 10,000 a H.E.A.T.H.E.R. android wiped the ichor from her perfect face. 'Weird in what way Lisa?! We have vanquished literally dozens of muties for Lord Randy!'
'Can it Rick!' Skater Dave The Dwarfling was picking off several particularly good good cybernetic limbs from some of the blue tribe of mutants. 'Is that really necessary?!' St. Stallone the cyborg knight spat out the words. 'Yes!' Skater Dave said with resigned calm. 'We might want to sell these somplace'. Tam The Elf was scouting ahead but was having a hard time dealing with the tangle of mutie corpses. The stink was pretty bad but the thing that leered out at him from the pile of bodies.
, Skuzz the mutant with his mohawk of many colours was on the job of looting the bodies, 'Dude did you ever get the feeling you were being watched?!
Somplace across the multiverse a laugh track played under several of Skuzz's jokes... And billions of eyes watched.

There's gonzo and then there's Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland rpg. The last time we spoke we had Mojo doing a 'pay per view special' on interdimensional cable. Its been over ten days since the last blog entry on this mini campaign.

MoJo isn't gonna sit back on his demonic spider hunches. Instead the bastard is going to arrange some nastiness for the PC's. And once again Venger's Cha'alt has the perfect angle to get the PC's motivated! A meteor streaking its way on a collison with Carcosa/Cha'alt. Yes we're taking Venger's 'Saving Cha'alt' as mini campaign adventure center piece. Mojo has used black foul sorcery to take a meteor from orbit & aim it at the exoplanet on a collison course.  Yeah we're talking about using Venger's adventure here  but as a 'pay for view' event! The planet destruction time is counting down on a live commerical & you can call in to reserve your slot today!

What no one knows is that the meteor isn't a meteor at all but actually the foul begotten spawn of the Outer Gods. The PC's are going to be in for a bad time as every odd coloured cultist is going to be trying to stop them from stopping the glorious event! And this is where the Mojoverse comes in! Mojo provides it all twenty four hours a day & seven days a week! And now you'll be on your way to being his biggest stars forever & ever! The Great Old Ones need their entertainment & you will provide it!
You can have every cultist armed with Carcosa hardware & weapons to slaughter the PC's. And this isn't gonna stop. The party is gonna find itself in some dire straites unless they can get help and we'll go over who & what is gonna help our neon clad foo erm adventurers next time.

Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland - 'The Carcosa Slaughter Tour ' Mini Campaign Idea

Awesome Rick  cleric of the  Orthodox temple of Lord Randy put his power glove on & looked over the alien landscape with his friends, 'Oh yeah! We have indeed entered the land of the forsaken brothers & sisters. Here only the cream of the crop will rise & the unbelieving fools will fall!'
Lisa 10,000 a H.E.A.T.H.E.R.  adjust her perfect black streaked platinum blood  hair the countless time. Checked her swords, ammo, & her fanny pack of mayhem. 'F 'em let's do this!' she skated the biomechanical hill with perfect precision. 'You have my bow', Tam the Elf said for another countless time. 'We know you you idiot', Skater Dave the Dwarfling said without any real conviction his hover board easily moving over the broken skulls of countless humanoids & the biomechanical landscape.  'Does anyone know how we got here?! ' The bedazzled armor of St. Stallone the cyborg knight showed under the alien  suns. 'No idea' but we're here & its time to party dude!', Skuzz the mutant with his mohawk of many colours was on the job. And that's when the Carcosian monstrosity leered up out  of the biomechanical ruin's muck & mire!

We've got a category one hurricane staring Connecticut in the face right now. Is this going to stop me from OSR blogging? Hell no!

The other day was H.P. Lovecraft's birthday & for the last couple of days we've been messing with Geoffery McKinney's Carcosa. But it was reading through 'The City of Iron blog''s snap review of Carcosa that one of the comments by tony caught my attention; "Lovecraft constantly changed the roles the Primordial Ones, the Old Ones, and other creatures thought his stories. So I wouldn't really bother trying to figure out the connections between those alien creatures. (Although, the Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia is an amazing book that should be owned by any fan of weird fiction and or fantasy.)

I think I would probably come up with my own Carcosa-esque history to explain away the roles those alien beings played in my science fantasy campaign."  This review &  comment got me thinking about how would we actually use Carcosa as a setting a game campaign. The answer was pretty much staring me in the face. Take Cha'alt & combined it with Carcosa to make a huge exoplanet. Then use a quick combo of Mutant Future, Realms of Chaos, to bring the adventure home! You're ready to go! Now the real meat of this  Oozing 80's and 90's nostalgia campaign mire would be Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland!
And I'd run this like I'd Carcosa in the past classic Marvel Bronze age comic book madness with B/X awesomeness! The warlords of Carcosa pit their best cyber wrastlers &  gladiators against the adventurers of Neonlords while battling against the best that these two OSR games has to offer. Then I'd sell the interdimensional cable rights to Marvel's MoJo. PC's in the past have run into & been cyber repaired at Spiral's Body shop. Any fans of late Eighties & Nineties Xmen comicbooks will immediately recognize this blotted cyber demonic horror from the mojoverse!

You can imagine that this not without cable & T.V. special event contracts!?! So the question in the past & present is, 'Have you got what it takes to go on tour?!'
Dungeons, mega dungeons, mini dungeons,  ruins, he's got em all charted out & the cable rights locked in! Video games, virtual reality, social dimensional websites with smellovision??! Mojo provides it all twenty four hours a day & seven days a week! And now you'll be on your way to being his biggest stars forever & ever!

The Great Old Ones need their entertainment & you will provide it! He's got the best in the business for traps & tricks! A certain troll & his family have been providing the bastard traps on contract for centuries!
Anyhow we've got you covered & the universe will be entertained! It says so in your contract folk!

High Tech Mysticism & High Caliber Adventure - Nightshift Veterans of the Supernatural Wars By Jason Vey & Original Dungeons & Dragon's The Underground & Wilderness Adventures

We should be wondering tonight, "Is there a world?" But I could go and talk on 5, 10, 20 minutes about is there a world, because there is really no world, cause sometimes I'm walkin' on the ground and I see right through the ground. And there is no world. And you'll find out.
"Is There A Beat Generation?" forum at Hunter College, New York, New York (8 November 1958)
Jack Kerouac

Someplace along the lines yesterday or the day before the wilderness started getting to me. This blog post picks right back up after this blog post here.

The underground & the wilderness surrounds us even in the urban landscape we're not even aware of it 99.9 of the time in my experience. The wilderness & underworld intrudes big time on our universe in ways that we don't expect. And that's the key here. The wildness & the underworld don't wait because they as well as their inhabitants are mythic. There's something deeply mythological in the nature of the wildness & dungeon enviroments. The fear of the unknown & inhuman that as the older one gets that one can feel deep down.

The dungeon doesn't wait for you it comes for you, your family, & everything else. Mythic landscapes of the invasive dungeon are as instinctive as our fear of the alien, the other, & the unknown. These fears & point of fact our fears feed these realms.
Is there a weird  wilderness planar realm that bleeds into our world on occassion taking humans as food, slaves, or worse?! Blobs of planar weirdness that Karl Edgar Wagner's Kane alludes to & Michael Moorcock's Elric slid into on occassion that PC's might find themselves in becomes a possibility.

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

Edgar Allan Poe's the Raven. "

Wizard warlords are not going to wait around for the wilderness & the underworld to expand themselves. Instead their going to use the natural buffering of worlds & planes to impose the alien invasive landscape onto our natural reality. And this is something that we see time & again in Sword & Sorcery. When you least expect it then you're suddenly going to find yourself an adventurer regardless of circumstance or more likely because of it. So time & again we see treasure being liberated by parties of adventurers & they sell it there's never any repercussions of this from a wizard, lich, etc.. But their most likely dead or destroyed?! Really?! No doubt it. Most likely that was  double or the party ran away or were they let go?!Think about it, the 'treasure' might in point of fact be spreading the alien landscape & dungeon's influence as it passes from hand to hand. The PC's doing the tyrant's work spreading the plane's alieness as it goes.
Suddenly an entire neighborhood find itself engulfed in the  alien chaos of the Fey's world. The familiar finds itself face to face with the unknown & the horror of it quickly escalates.

Suddenly a neighborhood convience store is engulfed in chaos only to be swept away by monsters & demons from some Hell of the unknown. The central idea that the Bakshi & Bourroughs realms are off over there someplace runs counter productive to the ideas put forth in the original Dungeons & Dragons games in a way. Let me bring this back to Nightshift Veterans of the Supernatural Wars & Age of Conan both by Jason Vey.

The PC's are at the edges of reality dealing with these incursions of the reality of the forces of the unknown. Perhaps the million spheres are actually aspects of this unreality that occasionally allows horrors into this Earth. Time & again we keep coming back around to the Lamentations of the Flame Princess rpg. Not so much because of the adventures or the rpg itself but the adventure design philosphy of James  R. Raggy the third within the game. Monsters being unique, the dungeon as incredibly dangerous weirdness waiting to spring upon the PC's, and more. These philosphies are as important to me about LoFP as the actual rpg is itself.

Would the mythic underground realms actually wait for the PC's to find them like a predator waiting to strike its prey. Or would the dungeon or wilderness barrel into the PC's because of its own machinations?!
Why does Jack Kerouac keep getting qouted?! Because there was an HP Lovecraft Beat generation pastche that was written by Nick Matmas called 'Move Underground'.  And while it was solidly done the ideas put forth in the book really hit home for use with the Wilderness & Unworld OD&D book.

And I'd read it when LoFP's Carcosa came out. This became the basis for a very long running campaign which is where the High Tech Mysticism & High Caliber Adventure label comes from. And one where Venger Satanis's Cha'alt books have played havoc with colliding campaign realities.
For what's going on in this campaign setting, LoFP's No Salvation for Witches By Rafael Chandler demon generators might be on tap.

The idea of the wilderness & the underworld isn't simply the sum of its parts. Its a dangerous predator waiting to spring on the party of adventurers.
