OSR Commentary - Running T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil (AD&D 1E) by Gary Gygax With Frank Mentzer using Adventurer Conqueror King System II (ACKS II) Rpg - an ACKS II character creation, party composition, and henchmen drafting guide optimized for surviving the Temple of Elemental Evil.

Navigating T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil in Adventurer Conqueror King System II (ACKS II) is an exercise in attrition, logistics, and tactical discipline. The Temple features high mortal lethality, factional warfare, subterranean chokepoints, and environmental hazard zones.

OSR Commentary - Running T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil (AD&D 1E) by Gary Gygax With Frank Mentzer using Adventurer Conqueror King System II (ACKS II) Rpg - The Deeper Depths

This guide outlines optimal character generation choices, ideal party roster compositions, and henchmen recruitment strategies tailored to survive the mega-dungeon.

1. Character Creation & Class Selection

In ACKS II, party composition must balance front-line holding power, divine mitigation, arcane area control, and covert scouting.

Core Class Tier List for T1-4

ClassOptimal ArchetypePriority AttributesEssential Role in the Temple
Cleric / PaladinDivine CrusaderWIS (13+), STR (13+)Mandatory. Turning undead, removing fungal contagions (Cure Disease), mitigating Sinkhole of Evil penalties, and casting Bless / Resist Fire.
Fighter / CampaignerShield Master / Polearm HeavySTR (13+), CON (13+)Mandatory. Maximizing Cleave mechanics against dense hordes of low-HD cultists, bugbears, and gnolls; forming narrow corridor shield-walls.
Mage / SpellswordElementalist / AbjurerINT (13+), DEX (13+)Crucial. Area-of-effect control (Sleep, Fireball, Web), counter-illusion capabilities, and clearing dense minion formations.
Thief / AssassinScout / Covert OperativeDEX (13+), CHA (13+)Disarming floor traps, scouting ahead without triggering faction alarms, and conducting false-flag infiltrations in cult disguise.
Dwarven VaultguardTank / SpecialistCON (13+), STR (13+)High saving throws against elemental magic, poison immunity/resistance, and detecting stonework traps in ancient dungeon levels.

Recommended Weapon & Armor Proficiencies

  • Shield & Spear / Morningstar: Shield mechanics in ACKS II provide critical protection against ranged missile traps and crossbow ambushes. Spears allow second-rank attacks over the shield-wall.

  • Bludgeoning Weapons: Essential for bypassing damage resistance on skeletal undead, earth elementals, and gargoyles.

  • Proficiency Choices: Command (boosts morale of henchmen), Fighting Style: Weapon & Shield, Dungeoneering (trap detection), Sensing Evil, and Healing (stabilizing characters before rolling on the Mortal Wounds Table).

2. Optimal 6-PC Party Roster Strategy

A balanced 6-character primary roster should be built around a dual-line tactical doctrine:

[ FRONT LINE ]  -->  1. Fighter (Heavy Plate)   2. Dwarven Vaultguard   3. Paladin / Cleric
[ REAR LINE  ]  -->  4. Thief (Scout / Bow)      5. Mage (Area Control)   6. Cleric (Support)
  1. The Anvil (2 Heavy Martial PCs): High AC ($17+$ in ACKS II terms) using plate mail and shields. Their primary duty is locking down $10\text{-ft}$ corridors, preventing monsters from reaching the backline, and utilizing Cleaves when cult guards break morale.

  2. The Divine Anchor (2 Divine Castors): One battle-focused Cleric/Paladin on the front line and one support Cleric in the rear. Dual divine casters ensure that losing a single caster to a critical hit or spell save failure doesn't leave the party without healing or poison neutralization.

  3. The Arcane Controller (1 Mage): Focuses heavily on crowd-control spells (Sleep for Level 1–2 cultists, Web for chokepoints, Invisibility for tactical extractions).

  4. The Specialist (1 Thief): Focuses on Find Traps, Remove Traps, and Listen. In ACKS II, hearing wandering patrols before they open doors prevents party surprise rounds.

3. Henchmen Drafting & Logistics

Running T1-4 without henchmen and men-at-arms is suicide. The Temple’s factional forces operate in squads of 8 to 20 combatants.

Ideal Henchmen Roster Structure

  • Level 0/1 Heavy Infantry (Men-at-Arms): Hire 4–6 heavy infantry from Hommlet or Verbobonc to hold rear guards and transport loot.

  • Level 1–2 Classed Henchmen:

    • 1 Junior Cleric: Acts as a dedicated scroll/wand reader and emergency medic.

    • 1–2 Fighters / Torchbearers: Armed with shields and spears to expand the front-line width in wide $30\text{-ft}$ temple chambers.

  • Logistical Specialists:

    • 1 Mule Driver / Teamster: Stationed at the entrance or in cleared rooms with supply mules carrying extra torches, rations, oil flasks, and iron spikes.

Managing Morale & Loyalty in the Temple

  • Base Loyalty Score: Calculated using the hiring PC's Charisma modifier + Loyalty bonuses from proficiencies (Command).

  • Morale Modifiers in Action:

    • Full Pay & Hazard Pay: Pay double monthly rates ($6\text{ gp/month}$ for infantry) when entering Level 3 or 4 to prevent desertion.

    • Share of Treasure: Granting henchmen a half-share of monetary treasure boosts their Loyalty by $+1$ over long campaigns.

    • Sinkhole of Evil Effect: In Level 4 or near elemental altars, henchmen morale drops by $-1$ to $-2$. Keep a high-Charisma PC or Paladin within $30\text{ ft}$ to aura-buff their Morale checks.

4. Tactical Operating Rules for T1-4

  1. Rotational Rest Shifts: Never rest inside active faction zones on Levels 1–3. Establish a fortified base in Hex 02.03 (Moathouse) or clear a single room, spike the heavy oak doors with iron spikes, and maintain a 3-tier watch schedule.

  2. Door & Corridor Control: Use ACKS II combat maneuvers to force enemies into $5\text{-ft}$ or $10\text{-ft}$ chokepoints. This negates enemy numerical superiority and allows front-line fighters to Cleave through low-HD troops sequentially.

  3. Mortal Wounds Mitigation: Always carry at least 3 doses of Healing Herbs or spell slots for Cure Light Wounds reserved exclusively for stabilizing downed party members within 1 turn of falling to 0 HP.

Here are the complete ACKS II stat blocks, combat capabilities, and mechanical conversions for the key major characters in T1-4: Lareth the Beautiful, Burne, Rufus, and Zuggtmoy.

  • Proficiencies: Weapon Focus (Battleaxe), Command, Military Strategy, Heavy Armor Expert.

4. Zuggtmoy (Demon Queen of Fungi - Bound Form)

Demigoddess / Greater Demoness (Level 4 Boss)

Imprisoned on Level 4 of the Temple, Zuggtmoy’s combat statistics reflect her weakened, bound state before unsealing her full planar might.

  • Armor Class: 10 (Natural Armor + Eldritch Aura)

  • Hit Dice: $16\text{d}8+32$ ($104\text{ hp}$)

  • Orb Vulnerability: A character channeling the Orb of Golden Death within $30'$ imposes a $-2$ penalty to all her saves and disables her Toxic Spore Cloud.

  • In Adventurer Conqueror King System II (ACKS II), the Orb of Golden Death (or the Yellow Skull of Death) functions as a major Eldritch Artifact. It is the primary key to the Temple, capable of commanding the four Elemental Nodes, binding elemental powers, and unsealing Zuggtmoy—while subjecting its bearer to severe soul corruption.

    Artifact Overview & Baseline Properties

    • Item Type: Major Artifact (Greater Wondrous Item)

    • Physical Form: A fist-sized skull fashioned from burnished gold, crowned with small depressions designed to hold four elemental power jewels (The Great Gems: Air, Earth, Fire, Water).

    • Alignment: Absolute Chaotic Evil (Sinkhole Radius: $30\text{ ft}$, Class I Sinkhole around bearer).

    • Base Passive Benefits (While Possessed):

      • Eldritch Protection: The wielder gains $+2$ to all Saving Throws against magic, elemental attacks, and breath weapons.

      • Aura of Terror: All non-Chaotic creatures within $10\text{ ft}$ suffer a $-1$ penalty to Morale and Saving Throws vs. Fear.

      • Elemental Detection: The bearer instinctively senses the direction and depth of the four Elemental Nodes and the Sanctum of Zuggtmoy within $10\text{ miles}$.

Power Activation Costs & Corruption Mechanics

Using the Orb's abilities requires sacrificing hit points, spell slots, or sanity. Furthermore, every activation risks permanent Soul Corruption.

    Activation Costs

To activate any major power, the wielder must spend an action and pay a cost based on the tier of power used:

    • Lesser Power: Spend $1\text{d}6\text{ HP}$ (cannot be mitigated by damage reduction).

    • Node Command / Elemental Power: Spend $2\text{d}6\text{ HP}$ AND one 3rd+ level spell slot (or $2\text{d}4\text{ CON}$ temporary drain for non-spellcasters).

    • Zuggtmoy Command: Spend $3\text{d}6\text{ HP}$ AND make a Save vs. Spells.

Corruption & Will Contagion (ACKS II Mechanics)

Every time a character activates a power of the Orb, uses an Elemental Node Command, or carries the item for more than 7 consecutive days, they must make a Save vs. Spells (modified by Charisma).

    • Failure Effects (Accumulative Corruption Table):

      1. Stage 1 (Mottled Decay): The bearer’s skin takes on a jaundiced, yellowish hue. $-1\text{ CHA}$ to non-evil creatures; $+1$ to Reaction Rolls with cultists.

      2. Stage 2 (Compulsive Greed): The bearer refuses to relinquish the Orb, sleeping with it against their chest. If separated by more than $60\text{ ft}$, they suffer a $-2$ penalty to all To-Hit and Saving Throw rolls.

      3. Stage 3 (Fungal Mutation): Small, fibrous yellow fungi begin growing under the skin. Permanent loss of $1\text{d}2\text{ CON}$.

      4. Stage 4 (Alignment Shift): Alignment shifts permanently to Chaotic Evil. The character becomes an NPC under the DM’s control if they complete the coronation ritual of Zuggtmoy.

Elemental Node Commands & Jewel Socketing

The Orb achieves its maximum potential when slotted with the Four Elemental Jewels found within the respective Elemental Nodes on Level 4.

Jewel SocketedNode Command AbilityPower Activation CostNode Effect
Earth Jewel (Yellow Diamond)Earthquake & Stone Control: Casts Passwall (at-will) or Earthquake (1/week).$2\text{d}6\text{ HP}$Grants absolute immunity to petrification and earth/stone damage. Teleports bearer to/from the Earth Node.
Air Jewel (Blue Sapphire)Gale Force & Summoning: Casts Fly (3/day) or summons a $12\text{ HD}$ Greater Air Elemental (1/week).$2\text{d}6\text{ HP}$ + 3rd-level spell slotGrants air-walking and project wind-shield (missiles suffer $-4$ to-hit). Teleports bearer to/from the Air Node.
Fire Jewel (Red Ruby)Inferno Burst: Casts Flame Strike ($8\text{d}6$ fire damage) 2/day or Fire Storm (1/month).$2\text{d}6\text{ HP}$ + 3rd-level spell slotWielder is immune to non-magical and magical fire. Teleports bearer to/from the Fire Node.
Water Jewel (Green Emerald)Drowning Tide: Casts Water Breathing (passive) and Control Water / Tsunami (1/week).$2\text{d}6\text{ HP}$Grants free movement/swimming and ability to turn water to ice or mist. Teleports bearer to/from the Water Node.

    Zuggtmoy Suppression & Binding Commands

The primary purpose of the Orb in T1-4 is controlling or re-sealing Zuggtmoy.

    1. Suppression Aura: When presented within $30\text{ ft}$ of Zuggtmoy:

      • Disables her Toxic Spore Cloud ability.

      • Imposes a -2 penalty to all her Saving Throws.

      • Prevents her from regenerating hit points.

    2. Commanding the Demon Queen:

      • A wielder who possesses all four jewels can attempt to force Zuggtmoy into submission.

      • Mechanic: The wielder makes a Charisma Check vs. Zuggtmoy's $16\text{ HD}$.

      • Success: Zuggtmoy is banished back to the Abyss for $66$ years, and the Temple collapses (see Level 4 Collapse Rules).

      • Failure: The Orb shatters the bearer's mind—dealing $6\text{d}6$ psychological damage (Save vs. Spells for half) and instantly freeing Zuggtmoy from all binding seals.

    Destroying the Orb

In ACKS II, destroying a Major Artifact requires extraordinary measures:

    • The Orb can only be destroyed if brought to the Elemental Plane of Fire (or the heart of the Fire Node) and struck by a +3 Holy Avenger wielded by a Lawful Paladin while all four Elemental Jewels are shattered simultaneously.

    • Upon destruction, the Orb explodes in an eldritch blast dealing $10\text{d}10$ untyped planar damage to everything within a $60\text{ ft}$ radius (Save vs. Blast for half).
