Commentary On The Fiend Folio For 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons For Your Old School Science Fantasy Campaigns

When it comes to the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons first edition Fiend Folio there's something to remember about the monsters. These monsters have a completely different feel then thier American counterparts. This makes them ideal to use with Science Fantasy rpg's. Now I've talked extensively about the Fiend Folio on this blog.

This is especially true of the OSR based games such as Stars Without Number where the creatures & monsters can easily be stand in's for alien creatures and monsters.
Stars Without Numbers the number of systems that have been isolated by the Scream is numerous. We have no idea what or whom has been trapped.
This makes perfect fodder for having the humanoid tribal  races that are in the Fiend Folio to the forgotten & fallen remains of alien empires.

This goes back to something I said in my commentary on the Fiend Folio; "The Fiend Folio is the forgotten Monster Manual and the monsters are easily discounted and overlooked. This makes perfect fodder for the DM to use them and reintroduce his or her players to the terrors of them. " Stars Without Numbers has numerous space dungeons & ruins baked right into the campaign background. And this same principle applies to the undead of the Fiend Folio; "This book has some great undead in it and they are so great to add into post apocalyptic games such as Mutant Future and Gamma World as needed for alien planets and ruins. Yeah, there's a bit of science fantasy over flow with Fiend Folio and the gonzo factor is such an appeal here"

Coming across a Vodyandi on a waterworld someplace in the interstellar back of beyond would cause quite a stir among players. The Fiend Folio has mostly been forgotten by today's fifth edition & Shadowdark crowd. This makes it a perfect suppliment to get a second life as a post apocalpytic or Science Fantasy supplement.

Let's go back to our friend the Voyanoi here for a second. These alien horrors could have been bred by Interstellar Kua Toa and used as muscle, guardians, etc. The empire dies off and this leaves the ancient guards still going about thier duties. There's plenty of  life in the Fiend Folio as a supplement for OSR Science Fiction games. This brings up the encounter tables in the back of the Fiend Folio; "Fantastic encounter tables in the back of the book make dungeon and wildness setting design and monster placement a snap. This keeps things moving at the table during play. "
And this is doubly so for OSR Science Fiction games where a fast moving encounter can mean the difference between a successful game campaign and the loss of a player.

Deeper Readings Into The Cities Without Number rpg & Trey Causey's Strange Stars OSR Setting

"The world is neon and dust.

There is nothing more than the flesh. There is nothing greater than the wires. There is nothing to dream that is not sold and nothing to worship that is not made. It is a mirrorshade world of human reflections, every red hunger and every black passion worshiped in cathedrals of glass and greed. The great love their sins like children and the least want only to be great. Who could hope for more?"

Cities Without Number is a cyberpunk role-playing game built for sandbox adventures in a dystopia of polished chrome and bitter misery. It's both a full-fledged Sine Nomine toolkit for building a cyberpunk world of your own and an Old School Renaissance-inspired game system for playing out the reckless adventures of the desperate men and women who live in it. Whether polished metal or flesh and blood, your operators will risk their lives and more to seize those precious things a merciless world would keep from them.

Alright it's been a New York City minute since I've cracked open the  Cities Without Number rpg. Readin deeper into Cities has been interesting tonight after getting together with my players over dinner & rereading the rules. Anyone whose been reading this blog knows we've been running Trey Causey's Strange Star campaign setting books. Cities is a perfect supplement to use with Strange Stars because of the transhumanistic elements of this OSR campaign.

What Cities Without Numbers brings to the table is a long and storied rpg of Cyberpunk goodness. Coupling it with Stars Without Numbers over the last couple of months has been interesting because it brings some perspective to our own cybered version of campaign Earth. This version of our own campaign Earth is well aware of the fact of the aliens & intergalatic scene of Strange Stars.
Earth however is struggling under the wait of knowing that it's no longer the center of the universe. Earthlings are in demand because of the intergalatic space trucking driver shortage. The holo vids are awash with colony adds and space piloting school adds.
Our own own party wants to hire two new drivers and aquire two brand new 'used' space haulers. Already our own operators are looking through thousands and thousands of adds for new talent and trucks.
There are tons of adventuring opportunities in the belt for our own adventurers and operators. Our own party operates on both sides of the law lately and there's been some push back from the more wiley of the alien races.
Our own party has been pushing hard since a run in with several of the cults of B4 The Lost City. More coming up as our operators work to get the party saved from the vicious locals.

First Impressions & Review of Cities Without Number Rpg by Kevin Crawford

Cities without Number rpg has finally been released to the public but the backers of the Kickstarter have been watching this rpg's evolution for sometime now. And it's a beast of a pdf clocking in at two hundred & fifty six pages of pure Cyberpunk rpg. Cities without Number  pretty much does it all, Cities has great layout, excellent fonts, and a solid B/X OSR  tool box approach to it's material.
Cities is completely cross compatible with Worlds Without Number, Stars Without Number, and Godbound as well as other Sine Nomine publishing rpg product. And Cities has been in development for months now. As a Kickstarter backer for this project we've been at ground zero for development. Take note other OSR publishers this is how you run a kickstarter. You get your gamer's feed back, take on board opinions, and more then turnout a great product.
There's already a Cities Without Number: Free Version rpg which has the following in it by Kevin Crawford:

  • An old-school inspired game system that's fully compatible with the sci-fi Stars Without Number game and its fantasy sister-game Worlds Without Number
  • Cyberware and sophisticated high-tech gear suitable for chroming the most discriminating cyborg and equipping the most refined of street operators
  • Playability-focused hacking rules designed to give hacking-focused PCs useful and important things to do without forcing an entire separate mini-game on the GM
  • Gear rules for drones and vehicles, to better equip PCs who want to bring a little extra iron on their next mission
  • System-neutral Sine Nomine worldbuilding tools for helping a GM create their own custom cyberpunk world or elaborate the details of existing worlds and settings
  • Gang, corp, and city district creation tools for fleshing out your world with people and places that fit
  • Fifty Mission Tags for adventure creation, plus guidelines and step-by-step procedures for handling facility infiltrations, managing local heat, selling loot, and other activities beloved of corp-hating street scum everywhere
  • The default campaign setting of the City, a premade backdrop to help you get into the game as quickly as possible
And Cities does exactly what it says on the package able to deliver the goods in no time. And does it in style. And Cities can easily be combined with Worlds Without Number to bring you a Shadowrun style Cyberpunk fantasy with little issue.
And the paid version is even better with more tools and cybernetic goodness;"

In the deluxe edition of Cities Without Number, you'll also be getting...

  • Cyberware quirks and features for particular megacorp product lines
  • Variant gengineered human types for PCs who don't fit the baseline mold
  • Optional rules for the psychological strain of Cyber Alienation
  • Optional rules for cheap street cyber, for those campaign settings where every goon with a knife has some wire beneath his skin"
  • Spellcasting, spirit summoning, and magical items for GMs who want to add a dash of magic into their cyberpunk world
This also means that Cities can be used to turn any of your favorite B/X 'World's Most Popular' Rpg adventures into cyberfantasy adventures. And this goes a long way towards getting incredible mile out of modules such as 'B4 The Lost City' where perhaps the other levels contain more then merely a lost race but city blocks of lost cybernetics and net running to thier favorite old school adventure modules!
Anyone whose been reading this blog knows we've been running Trey Causey's Strange Star campaign setting books. Cities is a perfect supplement to use with Strange Stars because of the transhumanistic elements of this OSR campaign.

So is Cities without Number rpg worth getting?! In a word, 'oh yes!' if your looking for a solid set of Cyberpunk rpg OSR tools that is capable of creating a campaign to call your own? In a word, yes. This book is worth every penny!

Dirty Deeds & A New Patron - Session Report - Cepheus Engine & Stars Without Numbers Hybrid Campaign

During tonight's Cepheus Engine rpg & Stars Without Number rpg hybrid campaign the player's PC's docked at  the In petlacalli # 3 Station.  And since this session picks up right from here. The PC's were mingling among some of the pseudo human wretches of space. The station was alive with telepathic music, spices, and aliens from across seven sectors. The place was awash in psychic impressions, forces, and even trained demons from beyond reality.  The last remains of the Váduva Tysulár, stared at the party of adventurers from lidded eyes and a mix of telepathic gossip. The molemen were sitting with a Áylgibrá royal scientist who wore the titantium skull cap of his cast having resisted the base sexual rites of his  caste.

Nearby his six foot four Yeleth bodyguard stood awaiting a command to take apart the party of adventurers. The Yeleth cost more then some spacecraft and looked very convincing or real. He gave the party a nod as he sipped the last of his Rebar wine that contained the dreams of a lost alien race in it's rippling surface awash with the colours of memory.  He's looking for a wreck that contains a Hz'rom dream crystal belonging to the dead memories of a Muality general dead for 2000 years. The party's patron is willing to let them have the wrecked starship and a few highly advanced technological artifacts. The deal is sealed with an interstellar holo map of the wreck.
The party is getting their  RAX Type Protected Merchant  refitted at the space station for the long voyage to the wreck.

Among The Riffraff of The Galaxy Session Report - Cepheus Engine & Stars Without Numbers Hybrid Campaign

The player's PC's stumbled across a trade starship  of the Mole Men of Mirach IV last night & they traded starship fuel for some trade high techlogical nick nacks. Things went well with several starship repairs being trading for future errants from the party. The used   RAX Type Protected Merchant  needed several minor repairs and the party traded favors & fuel for the repairs.

The adventurers now have a standing contract to meet the Mole Men on

In petlacalli # 3 Station  , the station is a hive of traders, interstellar drovers, and all kinds of intergalatic scum. Just the kinds of place where the PC's will fit in. Its also a haven for galatic grifters, space pirates, and alien spacers looking for work.

There are several leads that the PC's want to follow up with their bounties and since the Talon sector straddles the Clement sector. And attracts the whole of the galaxy into its wake. In petlacalli # 3 Station has a nasty reputation as the haven for being neutral ground for the underworld of the galaxy. Many of the human species  are not aware of this. And its gonna be a pretty big shock that humanity isn't at the top of the food chain out in the greater galaxy. Many of the mutate zenotypes are actually modified humanity that have been engineered to fit worker status on a variety of world. This includes the ancient nearby Reticulan empire.

Right now the crew is using their used  RAX Type Protected Merchant  for their current job & the computer exchange of information also benefitted their  Mole Men  trade partners & friends.

Campaign Upgrade & Ship Files: RAX Type Protected Merchant By Ian Stead From Moontoad Publishing For The Cepheus Engine Rpg & Your 2d6 Old School Science Fiction Rpg Campaigns

The players have been saving up for another starship in our Cepheus Engine/Stars Without Number hybrid campaign. So last night I grabbed a copy of Ship Files: RAX Type Protected Merchant By Ian Stead. This isn't a huge ship clocking in at twenty one pages but its well worth the four dollars.

The Talon sector in our campaign straddles the Clement sector, & the former  Reticulan Empire as a sorta of buffer zone between the two sectors. And the Talon sector is pirate alley. The RAX Type Protected Merchant is going to help them navigate between the sectors. And bring in some far more high end cargos. For the Clement Sector's deep dark frontier the RAX Type Protected Merchant  brings some real fire power to bare. The RAX Type Protected Merchant  is an excellent starship & Ian Stead's artwork as well as the writing bares this out along with an NPC or PC crew ready to go.
The players stumbled across the wreck of a TSAO Liberty ship in their travels & have dropped a hyperspace buoy to mark the wreck. Aboard is an OSR monster from another era.
And with the recent revelation that Professor M.A.R. Barker was a neo nazi scumbag I went back to the  Human Space Empires rpg. The author Drune was an on line friend of mine & not a neo Nazi scumbag to my knowledge. The Human Space Empires rpg is one of the OSR games that actually got me deeper into the OSR. Human Space Empires showed me the level of creativity that could be used create some incredible rpg systems. Aboard the wreck is a
Whimperers (Marashyálu) which has killed the crew & gone into stasis to await more explorers.  Since we're using the Stars Without Numbers rpg adapting the Whimperers (Marashyálu) isn't going to be that hard.

Using the Whimperers (Marashyálu)  is going to have to wait as the PC's are on the job at the moment & the wreck has been tagged. And the PC's have moved on to their current job so the Whimperers will have to wait!

In The Shadow of Sleeping Giants - Adventurer, Conqueror, King rpg & Kevin Crawford's Worlds Without Number rpg Combined Mini Campaign

So over the weekend its been me speaking with some fifth edition players because of the James Mishler review I did the other day. 'There's no welcome to the fold here folks', merely me reviewing a fifth edition product that will get used when our Amazing Adventure 5th edition game sessions continue. Now the three new fifth edition players about to have an Adventurer, Conqueror, King rpg wake up call!

So for our upcoming game session next week its a bit of ACK's mixed in with the Worlds Without Number rpg. And in this game mini campaign the PC's are contacted by a salvager with ties to The Olonsean Empire. The PC's are on 'the infinite wasteland'. this is the pan dimensional wasteland that connects to a myriad of post apocalyptical wastelands across the planes. Hence the connection to the ' Greater Earth' Basically this resulted because over the weekend I was playing with some of the world building tools of Worlds Without Number.

This whole adventure event connects into Joseph Mohr's Sleeping Giant 'pay what you  want' adventure. We've ran Sleeping Giant before & several adventure elements were left hanging. So these 'low hanging' fruit are what the PC's will be dealing with. And  no this isn't a regular D&D or OSR game at all. The last time I ran Joseph Mohr's Sleeping Giant 'pay what you  want' adventure we used Stars Without Number back in the early part of January of this year.

The planet Ceqal IV, is alien highly dangerous & radioactive. There are still warmachines left over from the last alien invasion. This is a highly challenging world & the PC's are going to need to think on their feet. More as this develops.

Review & OSR Commentary On Infinite Stars (Issue 2 - Nov 2011) Omer Golan-Joel, Richard Hazlewood, & Brian Pichelman The Free Fanzine For Original Traveller & Stars Without Number rpg

I'm a bit Kickstarted out at the moment & since the last review of   Infinite Stars (Issue 1 - Aug 2011) We decided to go ahead with a review of Infinite Stars (Issue 2 - Nov 2011)  by Omer Golan-Joel, Richard Hazlewood,  & Brian Pichelman . Because this fanzine is a solid resource for both old school Traveller & Stars without Number the articles can be used for other OSR games as well as we shall see.

'Expanded World Creation Rules for Stars Without Number' By Richard Hazlewood continues its course by giving expanded guidelines for world creation in SWN & they will work with Stars Without Number Revised. The 'tag' system & other general SWN system is put to good use in the article as SWN & Traveller's heart & soul are actually exploration as much as the trade aspect. This is a solidly done article. We jump over to another 'Dawn Sector' expansion with 'Dawn Sector: The Bladish' By Brian Pichelman. These guys are alien lobster men.  Did I mention they like war & are extremely tough?! Oh and dangerous! All perfect stuff for SWN Revised actually.
Is the second  issue worth the free download from 2011?! Actually, yes on two fronts.

The material so far can easily be converted over to Cepheus Engine rpg but its more then that. 'A Less-Travelled Road: In Defense of Dying in Traveller Character Generation'  By Omer Golan-Joel gets into the heart of the old school aesthetics. The idea of the consequences of character generation  being build into the game itself. 'Outer Veil: Freeman's Belt – Part I'  By Richard Hazlewood gives us yet another adventure or campaign component in the form of some solid science fiction and note; "  The background for this story is based on the Outer Veil setting developed by Omer Golen-Joel and published by Spica Publishing and is used with permission of the author. In no way should the events or specific descriptions in this story be considered “official” or “canon” to the published setting. Any differences between the official published material and this story are the fault of the author. I would also like to send a special thank you to Omer for allowing me to play in his sandbox"
What does this issue actually say for itself as a fanzine?! That the parts are sometimes greater then the whole in this case the issue in question
brings  new ideas, options, & characteristics to Cepheus Engine PC's. It's still relevant even in today's OSR marketplace. All of this material can easily be converted over to Cepheus Engine rpg easily giving the DM even more toys for the toybox.

Review & OSR Commentary On The Free Infinite Stars (Issue 1 - Aug 2011) Fanzine By Omer Golan-Joel & Co. For Original Traveller & Stars Without Number Free Edition

There are times when I've heard from DM's that they wish that there was a fanzine dedicated to Stars Without Numbers rpg & Cepheus Engine? Well there was but it was originally dedicated to Stars Without Number & original Traveller. Come with us now down the dark corridors of time to 2011 &   Infinite Stars (Issue 1 - Aug 2011).

Infinite Stars (Issue 1 - Aug 2011) by Omer Golan-Joel & Co. for original Traveller & Stars Without Number rpg first edition.  According to the editorial of issue#1; "The moment has finally arrived. After some considerable birth pains and a lot of delays caused by our Real Lives(TM), you are finally reading the first ever issue of Infinite Stars. This free fanzine is intended to serve as a platform for opinions and material for Stars Without Number(TM) , Traveller(TM) and other sciencefiction role-playing games. Our door is open to anyone who wishes to see his or her material or opinions published for these games, as long as it is reasonable, and, of course, as long as it does not infringe on the intellectual property rights of the original authors of these games. This first issue unveils some of the main serial sections of this fanzine: The Manufactory which is concerned with technology, ships and equipment; A Less Travelled Road in which we discuss Classic Traveller; Dawn Sector which is a fan-made sector for Stars Without Number; and Personnel Files in which we present character generation options, and, later on, we will provide NPCs as well. In future issues, we might start additional sections such as The Menagerie which will discuss alien life-forms, and Visitations which will provide short adventures."  But is the first issue worth the free download from 2011?! Actually, yes on two fronts.

Richard Hazelwood has a very streamlined ship manufacturing process article in the Manufactory which is still solid even for Stars Without Number Revised. 'A Road Less Travelled: A Fresh Look At Traveller' by Omer Golan-Joel & its opinions can be covered over to Cepheus Engine rpg a retroclone of classic Traveller. 'Dawn Sector: The World of Flicker' By Brian Pichelman covers a brand new sector & is extremely useful for the DM looking to have a sector that isn't well known among the sci fi 2d6 fandom. 'Personnel Files: More Options for Stars Without Number Characters' By Omer Golan-Joel brings new ideas, options, & characteristics to SWN PC's. It's still relevant even in today's OSR marketplace.

Why?! Because much of the material is usable with the  Cepheus Engine rpg & its still a solid fanzine. Yes there's several 2d6 fanzines on the market for Cepheus Engine but what makes Infinite Stars unique is the combo of old school Traveller & Stars Without Number rpg in equal measure.
You can find

OSR Review & Commentary 'The Stars Without Number Equipment Database' By Angry Golem Games For Stars Without Numbers Revised Or Your Old School Campaigns

When it comes to interstellar rpg games there's one thing that's always been a pain in the afterburner. That's the fact that there's never enough equipment to satisfy every science fiction or science fantasy fan. And this was something that came across when looking over Troll Lord Games's Starship Warden rpg book. Not that there isn't enough sci fi equipment & weapons. But enough to satisfy the sci fi fanatics? What to do?! Fortunately all of the heavy lifting was taken care of by ANGRY GOLEM GAMES. And their book 'The  Stars Without Number Equipment Database'

If your expecting oogles of sci fi artwork & fantastic equipment illustrations there's none of that. And that's fine for this sci fi rpg fan because we're interested in stats, suits, armor, weapons, & all kinds of mayhem inducing devices. And that's exactly what we get here! There are solid stats on, '
Armors, Ranged Weapons, Melee Weapons, Heavy Weapons, Ammunition's, Communications, Computing & Accessories, Field Equipment, Pharmaceuticals, Tools and Medical, Batteries and Generators, Vehicles, Drones, Droids, Cyberware and Misc. Equipment.' All of this comes in solid sixty two pages of ultra violence goodness that your PC's are gonna wanna use. 'The  Stars Without Number Equipment Database' isn't sit on shelf equipment & weapons but actual fighting & solidly made stuff that you can equip your PC's with or better yet your NPC's!
There's enough in sixty two pages to get a full on adventuring group equipped & ready to start kicking alien or human behind. And its well done. The book is well laid out & very much up to
ANGRY GOLEM GAMES standards.

The  Stars Without Number Equipment Database'  is sheer OSR & it's ready to go for those games easily. And this is something we find time & again ready to go for each of these weapons. The  Stars Without Number Equipment Database'  will easily work with OSR games such as Mutant Future or Stars Without Number Revised.

'The  Stars Without Number Equipment Database' is a solid book which does exactly what it says on the tin & title. That is it gives you gobs of weapons, armor, & equipment for your OSR sci fi games & it does it well.

Hartford Beta Max Black Book Stars With Number Campaign Notes - The Talon Sector Now With More Cha'alt - Zero Session Campaign Workshop

If I'm going to tell the campaign setting of the Talon sector then its gonna be through the lens of  Rogahn the Fearless and Zelligar the Unknown.  There are several reasons for this but there's a lot of real world stuff behind some of this campaign switch up the least of which is Covid's impact.

For the last couple of months a number of campaigns of mine have collapsed because of Covid & the deaths of two of our players. This happens when there's an empty chair or two at the table. These included Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea, the Victorious rpg, & to some extent my Cha'alt/Godbound rpg.

So in the meantime while all of these events  have been going on around us, the time has been taken up with relearning the original Traveller rpg & Cepheus engine rpg at the same time. And with this out came the Stars Without Number rpg books. That's where the arguments started between the players which basically boiled down to scaling back the game. Now really this isn't a problem because a number of players want to bring over their Dungeons & Dragons characters. Now here's the part where we start talking about Stars Without Numbers Revised rpg
The SWN revised book has the space magic section & its here where the meet point between Dungeons & Dragons, Cha'alt, & the Talon sector is. According to the revised SWN rule book;"Space Magic, with rules and guidelines for introducing sorcerous powers and old-school magic into your starfaring adventurers, with sagacious Magisters, versatile Arcanists, and Adepts graced with supernatural powers."
Its within this zone of weirdness that the
The Codex of the Black Sun: Sorcery for Stars Without Number emerges.

The Talon sector is one whose planar stability has been weakened with Entropic weapons. Things from the outside have been coming through for decades. This has created psychers for hundreds of years & a new Caesar has only recently emerged. The Space Patrol has its agents & advisors within the court now. And this is setting up some of the coming conflict.

The sector is under the control of royals that resemble the courts from the '82 film Krull. Dangerously Dark Ages & utterly hide bound with royal houses with martial & family ties. Its only been a few hundred years after the events of the coming of something like the Beast from Krull.

Contact between the Galatic Imperium has been reestablished but the royals are already chaffing under the invisible chain & collar of the Imperium. Psychers have emerged & left planet side as opportunities present themselves. Here's where Character Options for Stars Without Number From Stellagama Publishing comes into play. Players were asking about this particular book for alternative psychics.

Rogahn the Fearless and Zelligar the Unknown are figures out of legend & they cast a very long shadow among the adventuring community. But its the horrors that still lay in  the Caverns of Quasqueton that no one is talking about. Meanwhile silent black eyes watch from the darkness taking the odd farmer, banker, merchant, & prince.

And what of Cha'alt?! The hordes of Cha'alt stand on the precipice & the threshold just waiting to invade through the old gateways & no one's the wiser?! Or are they?! Emerald seers watch from the sidelines & hidden places to advise the Caesar from the shadows.

Witches & black masses are happening on the Borderlands as the Cults of Chaos gather their armies in the old places. The darkness gathers once again as the fires are lit in the keeps at the edges of the continents.

So why has everything accelerated?! Has the world doomed itself again with massive plunge into darknesss?! No instead the events time table has moved up. Why? Because eighteen months have passed & the black pyramid waits for no man & the forces of Chaos know it! They can feel it!
