Post Apocalyptic Rpg Horse Trade - Dead Lands Hell on Earth Rpg

I had a friend stop by whose wife is a seamstress and wanted to do a bit of horse trading. I fix a couple of his machines and he'd throw a couple of post apocalyptic rpgs my way. Well it took a bit more in parts but the books have been in my possession for few days and here's where it gets pretty interesting.
According to Wiki:
It was written by Shane Lacy Hensley and originally published by Pinnacle Entertainment Group
. As part of the original marketing campaign in August 1998, the game had a green leatherbound hardcover edition run, limited to about 750 copies. I don't have one of the leather bound copies.
Back in the early '00's I played a fair bit of 'Dead Lands Hell on Earth' and here's where I know a fair bit about the game and how it works.
A bit of the background on the game according to Wiki:
As the name implies, Deadlands: Hell on Earth is set in the same exact place as the original Deadlands roleplaying game. Specifically, it is set in a post-apocalyptic future of the original "Weird West" setting of Deadlands, also known as the "Wasted West."

And that's really my big problem with the game. The fact is that this is set in the Wasted West of Deadlands and allows PC's to go from Deadlands to this PA setting without blinking an eye.
That's fine but the game fills in every single last detail of the Deadlands Wasted West setting.  This is coming from a fan of the game. I love the sandbox and I'm a big fan of the world but its really the author's and the game company's world.
Period.
Every single square inch of 'Hell on Earth' has a reason for being there and a connection to their earlier game. Its also trade marked to heck and everything is copyrighted. I have no problems with
 Pinnacle Entertainment Group.
They've put out some fantastic games and the Savage World system is great but this game helps to really define why I love the 'OSR'.
The DYI factor and kitchen sink is what really drove me back into the waiting arms of the retroclones.
Make no mistake at all I think I got a great trade but this helps to remind me of the early 00's in gaming.
I also got Colony and the last 'Hell on Earth Book'.
So all in all a great trade.

Free Mutant Future adventure: Ware of the brain Lashers

This is really nice solid continuation of the Mines of the Brain Lasher adventure from Mutant Future.
Its available right over
 HERE
Brain Lashers are possibly one of my all time favorite races from Mutant Future and this is a great little continuation of the Mine adventure.
Solid, easily adaptable, and well written this adventure comes pre stocked by the author.
There is a ton of add on room for DM's to customize it and the DYI spirit of the adventure shows.
According to the author -
"The adventure is compatible with Mutant Future, Gamma World and other similar science fantasy post-apocalyptic games. With minor tweaks you can naturally run it with any system or setting." Nicely done and a four out of five.

These creatures were created long before the Apocalypse  that took the worlds of the Ancients from the world today. These mythical chimera have only recently been freed from the depths of the Earth where their kind has been imprisoned for thousands of years.
Many of these monsters were bred eons ago for gladiatorial games beneath the crust of the Earth. Very often they combined the worse aspects of simian, spider, and octopus into a behemoth sized package.
These creatures often sport addition mutations and some seem almost customized with weird superior mutations. Spitting bile, acid, and other less savory mutations have all been encountered by badland scavengers.
Because of the high rate of metabolism these monsters must feed at a regular two week cycle. Because of their scavenger like nature this is not a problem. They can feed on anything from carrion to some inorganic compounds. These include rubber, some plastics, and even ancient instillation found in buildings.
These beasts are blessed with incredible senses and can see into the infrared spectrum , and ultrviolet range as well. They can track quarry for miles by scent alone and any spilled blood will send them into a berserk like state. These beasts often travel in hunting packs and raid villages for prey. The rainy seasons bring such raids when the mating frenzy brings the need for prey.
They are partially amphibious and can be found in damp caverns. These beasts often have a crude form of telekinesis enabling them to dig through soft rock and soil. This tactic is often used to surprise lowland villages.
Often these monsters are used as guardian beasts by certain clans of wizards and mutant overlords. Many of these will often use ancient machines to modify or create new variations of these beasts as hench things. There are three variety of low intelligence which may follow simple orders. These monsters are unpredictable at best and completely uncontrollable at worst.
They often horde artifacts and other trinkets for light snacks should food sources become dried up. Several of these monster's species have also been encountered both in under water ruins and on other worldly colonies.

Four Post Apocalyptic Televisions For Your End Of The World Viewing

Well the end of the world is almost upon us again. So I thought I'd share four of my favorites for your viewing and inspiration pleasure. Since everyone loves the retro 70s science fantasy vibe here we go.
The Logan's Run television show took place in its own little corner of the Logan's Run television universe and really made an impression on the POA genre. The game's echoes are still being felt on gaming tables every place. Simply its Logan, a beautiful companion/love interest and his faithful android friend. The escape from the Domed City and away they go in a hover car. The encounters they have are part of the series and they encounter have all happen while being pursued by Frances. Logan's ex Sandman partner.

There's a lot to steal here for your favorite POA game. The sets , backgrounds, the NPCs are all able to be ported into Gamma World or Mutant Future without mercy.

Then of course their's the other incredible POA  influence when the world went to those damn filthy apes. The Planet Of The Apes television series was its own universe as well. Sure there were familiar themes and such but man this was violent little slice of  televised ape adventures. The apes, the themes, expansions, new settings, etc. It was all there to be used and abused for post apocalyptic gaming and it was/is perfect for inspiration.

When it comes post apocalyptic television shows there are a few of the lesser known ones. Such as the 70s Saturday morning vehicle called Ark II. This is a fixer up and its a very odd little show. There's lots to use here. Cool vehicles  weird NPCs, gene spliced chimps, and odd adventures. The whole show looks like a cliche but this was Saturday morning fare.

Of course then there's the whole Saturday morning cartoon and nothing speaks volumes then Thundarr The Barbarian. Perhaps the best kids cartoon for Post Apocalyptic fare bare none.
The whole thing screams science fantasy. So that's what's on my Net Flicks menu for this evenings entertainment. Cheers folks. See ya on the other side.

Deviant Database From The Savage Afterworld Review

APOCALYGEDDON ABBERATIONS!
From the harmless to the harmful, from the weak to the wicked, this Deviant Databasecollects over 90 monstrous mutants that have inhabited The Savage AfterWorld!
  • Challenge your players with flying fiends like the flaming Dragonfire or the rampaging Flynocerous!
  • Oceanic adventures await with aquatic adversaries such as the Flamewhale, Oceanbrood, and Crabhemoth!
  • Mutant menaces like the Pumpking and Brain Lord lurk in the hidden shadows and manipulate their eager minions!
The Deviant Database is fully compatible with Goblinoid Games' Mutant Future andLabyrinth Lord RPGs as well as other Original Edition Fantasy RPGs.

The Deviant Database is a product of the deranged mind of Sniderman. My printer was busy this afternoon whizzing these twisted pages out. I assembled & began to read through them while getting my mind ready for another game session on Sunday.
These are well thought out monsters made especially for Mutant Future. They've been collected, created, & mutated for your table top.
These things run the gamut. From air & flying menaces to mutants that would fit right at home in an urban enviroment. These are monsters that I can actually see using.
The art work throughout is old school. These are monsters that have appeared in the Savage Afterworld blog but they've been refined, cleaned up, & are ready to go.
The book is illustrated though out with an old school awesomeness vibe. The book is very well laid out & very easy to read. These are big pluses in my book.. This isn't Sniderman's first run around the blog with publishing. His stuff has appeared in Fight On as well. The man is a competent monster writer. These are great mutant menaces to pepper your PCs with. There is a warning though. Even though these are perfectly balance monsters a few of them are final objectives or boss monsters. They will chew a party up so caution should be taken.
Do I think that at 80 plus pages including index that the pdf is worth it? Yes I do hands down.
Its well written, cleanly laid out, & a great addition to a DM's tool box
The Deviant Database is available as a downloadable PDF for $5.95 atDrive Through RPG and in perfect-bound hardcopy book for $14.95 at Lulu.

Using The Deviant Database In A Space Opera Setting

Well here's the real deal on this book. A DM needs as many monsters as he can get his hands on. Seriously with the release of  Star Ships & Space Men second edition my notes are filling up fast. This book presents 90 monsters that will double for both post apocalyptic mutants, alien menaces, left over bio weapons & mutant left over monsters for Labyrinth Lord.
Lets quickly talk about the break down of these monsters & where they can be used.
Deviant Database collects over 90 monstrous mutants that have inhabited The Savage AfterWorld!

  • Challenge your players with flying fiends like the flaming Dragonfire or the rampaging Flynocerous! These right here are your countryside or small town ruin monsters. Stick em in & your ready to rock. The away party is going quickly get flattened by this type.
  • Oceanic adventures await with aquatic adversaries such as the Flamewhale, Oceanbrood, and Crabhemoth!. These are perfect for both the Labyrinth Lord Sea Druid style underwater forbidden ruins or the Lost World star trek style dealings
  • Mutant menaces like the Pumpking and Brain Lord lurk in the hidden shadows and manipulate their eager minions! These & there are a few in the book are great for your space port, urban wasteland (think the new Judge Dread movie here) or planetary romance ala Labyrinth Lord.
Basically speaking these mutant menaces can appear across the time streams! All though I really wish that Goblinoid had made the Pacesetter games cross compatible with the rest of the family. Although this has never stopped a determined DM like me from dealing with it. These monsters could easily be used in a Swords & Wizardry or a Terminal Space game with easy.

Bottomline is that Tim Snider aka Sniderman has made another solid monster book. For  6.00 you get 90 monsters that have entertained & killed lots of  PCs in the wastelands! This is them in one place, easily accessible & solidly done! Nice Job Sniderman!

Post Apocalypse Barsoom- Actual Play

The players had joined up with a band of mercenaries  &  had gotten picked up by a flyer of the Red Scorpion 'Pathan' or mercenary warriors. The captain of the Red Scorpions was being especially cruel to one of the crewmen whipping him into submission.

The players quickly got the upper hand with the captain & threw him over board. They're main fighter had control of the ship until the Dwarven Cleric realized he was flying & failed a wisdom check. Things went from bad to worse as the players came into full sight of their mission objective!
A Scout Tripod which fired on the ship causing damage to the anti gravity generators. The players managed to steer the craft into the tripod & crash the flyer. After aiming grapples at the legs of the thing! The whole mess exploded into the desert floor.
The flyer went from 5 decks to 3 in one fell swoop. Most of  the party got away in an escape craft only to land a few hundred yards away.
A careful search of the wreckage turned up some "treasure" but this is when the giant scavenger lizards.

The party retreated inside the craft to see what was happening as the lizards feasted on the bodies of the fallen mercs. They engaged the prehistoric giants  a couple of times & retreated deeper into the ship.

The real problem show up about an hour into the melee when a high pitched throbbing was heard from over the horizon!

Three Martian Manta Rays showed up!
The party was almost blasted into atoms as the craft scanned the downed flyer wreckage. With a few successive animal handling rolls one of the players managed to calm the lizards down & subdue them for riding. Some of the flyer wreckage revealed brading & such.
The mantas destroyed the top half of  the ship & the players each wrangled a lizard & moved very quickly away.

Three more mantas were rounding over the desert rise just as the first three destroyed the ship wreckage in a fiery explosion !
The players thought that they were lucky to escape with their lives & headed toward civilization. Or so they think!

J.J. Abrams sells sci-fi apocalypse pilot to NBC

deserted-city
First it was Star Trek reboot  & now he's taking a wack at Gamma World? Nope this looks like Aftermath the television series. Every single piece of technology? Hmm this might actually be worth watching. I wonder where this is going to go?

Just when you thought J.J. Abrams might not have a sci-fi pilot in contention for next fall, along comes Revolution.
NBC has picked up a new drama pilot from the Star Trekdirector and Warner Bros. TV. The logline: “A high octane action drama from J. J. Abrams following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist.”
Now that’s the rather cryptic official description. But here’s an earlier, more exciting logline with more detail:“In this epic adventure thriller, a family struggles to reunite in a post-apocalyptic American landscape: a world of empty cities, local militias and heroic freedom fighters, where every single piece of technology — computers, planes, cars, phones, even lights — has mysteriously blacked out … forever.”
Ohhhh. Better, yes? Tough concept on a TV budget, but I’d watch this.
The original story appears here!

Lycanoid Mutates A Monster For Your Old School Space Opera

Damage:1d6 or Weapon

A product of Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planet Development are these monsters who come from a world where WW II boiled down into the worst dirty Atomic War seen out side of Earth's past. These monsters are unholy experiments combinding the worst of werewolves, man, & orc strands into these hybrid abominations. These creatures will work for anyone or anything who can meet their price & their standards of service.
These monsterous hybrids travel the space lanes raping, pillaging, & looting where they can & however they can. They use a combination of WWII style weapons combined with lightning quick raids.

They are cannibals of the highest order & will not hesitate to kill in the blink of an eye. While they can not shape change they can go into a berserk mode before combat gaining +1 to all attacks.

After 3 rounds have passed since they received wounds  they will regenerate 3 hit points per round there after. They rule their tribes through a combination of brutal force, military style discipline & pure carnage.
They use knives, guns, blood, & thunder as their hall marks. They will steal any space craft present to add to their arsenal.

The world where they originally came from is now so much atomic rubble but since they are a product of  Nazi super science, unholy religion, & pure madness they continue to terrorize the space lanes. Many will commit suicide rather then fall into the hands of these vermin.

These units operate in 6 man teams & are armed with archaic weapons from WWII. Most often machine guns doing 1d4 damage with a range of 60'. They may do a biting attack as well for 1d3 points of damage & with a 30% of causing a disease of a most heinous nature such as the red death or plague. They may be rebuked or turned by a cleric due to their unholy natures.

They typically have space craft capable of  making a limited number of jumps 1d4 & with a range of 1d20 light years.

For All Your European Post Apocalypse Mega-Dungeon Needs!

Need a great destination spot for your post apocalypse game then look no further. Add those bat things in from Primeval & your good to go!

One Million Londoners Will Live in a Single Tower

London has to provide housing for a million more people by 2016, taking into account new arrivals, plus old-timers who need an upgrade. Since space is limited, UK company Popularchitecture is proposing a 5,000-foot high tower that would house pretty much everybody all in one shot—and reduce four city neighborhoods to a single cylindrical building. See the whole thing below.

The tower, which at this point remains simply a novel idea, would take up little actual ground space and run like a proper democracy. It is literally broken up into municipal areas—the "neighborhood" is a singe floor of 600; the village is 20 floors and houses 6,000. There are also three super-districts that house 33,000 people each.
Elected reps serve in a local government and have regular meetings to decide what to do with common areas, which would include an ice skating rink, a botanical garden, an open-air theater, and tennis courts.
Circular openings in sections of the tower will provide nature-y parks and gardens for citizens. Five circulation cores with massive elevators—think the Tube, except it goes up and down instead of weaving underground—transport residents from neighborhood to neighborhood. Water and waste will be recycled, and fresh water harvested from the clouds, which pretty much start right around where the tower's peak ends.
Since your workplace, your local movie theater, and all your friends will be in the same building, you'll ever have to leave.
How convenient/scary! Images by Popularchitecture

One-Million-person Mega Dungeon from New York to San Francisco

Following in the wake of this morning post apocalypse mega dungeon under a city is this follow up article also from Io9

Too bad this one-million-person city from New York to San Francisco was never built

Otherwise, we could pretend we were living in a Judge Dredd storyline. This 1969 design by Alan Boutwell and Mike Mitchell — the aptly titled Continuous city for 1.000.000 human beings — never took off, but this design and other fanciful megastructures offer a glimpse into an arcology-filled future the past never delivered.
This million-person city was presented with several other massive cities at the Megastructures Reloaded exhibition that ran in Germany in Autumn 2008. The show focused on visions of gargantuan urbanism that appeared in such 1960s futurist architecture groups like Archigramand Archizoom.
Many of these designers focused on primarily theoretical spaces, but Boutwell and Mitchell saw their continent-spanning arcology as a feasible project — if the proper gumption was to be applied, that is. Explained the curators of Megastructures Reloaded:
Too bad this one-million-person city from New York to San Francisco was never built
It spanned on hundred meter high pillars straight across the American continent. Its interior combined all classical functions of urban life and was connected by a complex traffic system that was differentiated by speed, transportation and distances [...] Alan Boutwell and Michael Mitchell described their project with the self-confidence and urgency that is characteristic of that time: This is our city. We have not sensationalized. All that we have described is feasible today.
Too bad this one-million-person city from New York to San Francisco was never builtOf course, it's not exactly clear why such a wonderfully insane metroplex would be necessary, but its layout certainly predated the now internet-famous Alameda-Weehawken Burrito Tunnel. I mean, it's not like the duo was trying to drain the Mediterranean or build the Eiffel Tower(s) in the middle of the ocean.
Too bad this one-million-person city from New York to San Francisco was never builtYou can check out concept art for some other loopy retrofuturistic megastructures at the Archigram Archival ProjectHafiz Amirrol's website (where there are synopses of several unbuilt avant-garde cities, like the Superstudio at left), and the websiteRNDRD.
Digital rendering of Boutwell and Mitchell's design by Won Sok Choi. Hat tip to EdificeComplex!
Now to follow up this morning's post here are some details on the under ground New York city that we saw this morning!

A 1969 plan to build a second, nuke-proof Manhattan below New York City

A 1969 plan to build a second, nuke-proof Manhattan below New York City

Every now and again we encounter a retrofuturistic urban planning proposal that is equal parts whimsical and hilarious, such as the proposed million-person city spanning from New York to San Francisco. Here's something that eclipses that design in terms of comic impracticality. Behold Oscar Newman's 1969 plan to hollow out an entire, nuclear-resistant city under Manhattan. How on Earth would all of this space be made? Why, by burying nuclear weapons deep underground and detonating them, of course.
The notion of building back-up cities in case of emergencies still thrives (see: the modern plans for a clone Tokyo), but Newman's vision of a Morlock Manhattan was a bit of a rib-tickler. Explains John Ptak of this scheme over at Ptak Science Books:
A 1969 plan to build a second, nuke-proof Manhattan below New York City
The author of this plan speculated on building this spherical city in Manhattan bedrock—a structure which so far as I can determine would have a volume of 1.2 cubic miles (5 km3) with its top beginning some 1,200' under Times Square [...] Newman published this in 1969 (?!) after somehow latching onto the idea of clearing out massive underground caverns with nuclear explosions—in this case, the space would be hollowed out under Manhattan. The underground sphere would be a miniature version of whatever was above it—along the medial there would be a "topside" of a regular city with streets and high rise buildings, underneath which would exist an underground city for the underground city. In this honeycomb would exist the means of production and energy, segmented in multi-block-sized enclosures of no charm.
My favorite embellishments are the giant "air filters" that overshadow skyscrapers topside and the wan Coca-Cola advertisement floating in the nether-deeps.
