Pacific Rim Science Fiction Trailer

This looks so good.
The full-fledged trailer for
Guillermo Del Toro action-packed Jaegers vs. Kaiju (Giant Robots vs. Giant Monsters) flick.

After a dimensional portal opens deep beneath the ocean, Earth is attacked by enormous creatures with only one thing on their minds: destruction. Rather than giving in, humanity picks up the pieces and constructs a force of massive machines (with names like Gipsy Danger, Cherno Alpha, Coyote Tango, and Striker Eureka) to fight back against the onslaught.

Those mechs look so cool very well done trailer. This is going to be a very expensive year for movies.
This looks like just the thing for Giant monsters. Giant Robotic action! And all of the wreckage that they can pack into a trailer. You can even see the blue prints for the giant robos thanks Famous Monsters of Filmlands right over Here

Man of Steel - Official Trailer #2

Well this is one hell of a week for Trailers! We've got the second Man of Steel trailer and what is going on? The US Army, flying saucers, and weirdness. Lots of interesting things are happening here. Can't wait to see where they're going with this one!

Archtype Sci Fi Short film

RL7 is an eight-foot tall combat robot that goes on the run after malfunctioning with vivid memories of once being human. As its creators and the military close in, RL7 battles its way to uncovering the shocking truth behind its mysterious visions and past.

This is a very cool little film that I came across and wanted to share with folks. This is a film staring
Starring Robert Joy (Land of the Dead, CSI:NY) and David Anders (Heroes, 24
). It could be used as a jump off point for  Stars Without Number Game or Even a more serious Star Ships and Space Men second edition ideal

New Post Apocalyptic Sci fi Trailer - After Earth

After Earth is a big budget science fiction film from M. Night Shyamalan which has Will Smith and son Jaden Smith playing a father and son team who crash on a long-abandoned and quarantined Earth of the far future.

Alright so what do have here? Another post invasion movie with lots of wildlife and the human race leaving Earth for other worlds. Very post apocalyptic feel to this with over tones of science fictional reality. This seems to be the latest post Hollyweird trend of late. This is another one where I'm going to play wait and see with the movie. Meantime this could be used as a blue print for any number of science fictional movie rpg games. Lots of potential.

Outpost 632 - Legacy Of The Krell

File:Projeto Animalia 19.jpg
Dr. Edward Morbius: In times long past, this planet was the home of a mighty, noble race of beings who called themselves the Krell. Ethically and technologically they were a million years ahead of humankind, for in unlocking the meaning of nature they had conquered even their baser selves, and when in the course of eons they had abolished sickness and insanity, crime and all injustice, they turned, still in high benevolence, upwards towards space. Then, having reached the heights, this all-but-divine race disappeared in a single night, and nothing was preserved above ground.

Outpost 632

This world is a forbidden world to all in coming traffic off the normal galactic grid. The world seems like a vacation spot but hidden below the surface of this beautiful world is a deadly secret. This was once a world of the Krell. A hollowed out structure of death and destruction given form. The vast underground vaults have not been plumbed nor its secrets ever been scratched.
The surface of this world is a death trap and it springs without warning.
The Nano Sentries still guard the secrets of the Krell and the weather patterns themselves seemly will turn on those who trespass here.
Here are stored the Event Horizon weapons of the Krell and the very place seems to hum with the machines that still await masters who will never return in two thousand centuries

 File:Colliding planets.jpg
Psychics and psy navigators who cross the area have massive nightmares about the place and blood drenched visions of the horrors of the Krell. Time itself seems to slow down around the world. But the promise of riches beyond compare still draws the desperate and foolish every couple of years.
Those who get to close to certain planets with the 632 system are attacked by a 15 hit dice solar flare/fire elemental monster. The thing attacks with a 1d10 tendril of solar fire that cleanses everything and leaves nothing behind.
WASP-12b (NASA).jpg
The effects of the Krell solar worm weaponry is well known and excluded under forty five treaties of the Galactic Peace Accords. But still there are those who would profit from the death and destruction of others. The Zuth'ro are one such race that mines planets even inhabited ones using this weaponry. They pay millions of credits for such intact artifacts even if the artifacts themselves pray to the Outer Darkness in hymns of madness.
 Exploding planet.jpg
Of the Vaults of Gogg-hora and the thousands of other nameless holes of horror that lay beneath the ground of Out post 632. There have only been three scientific studies in the last thirty -two years. One one made it back alive if somewhat insane. The whole place is patrolled by ID beasts and Nano weapons.File:Nettle cave.jpg
The Oupost is under sealed indict and  hyper space drone ships patrol the outer systems regularly.  Destroying whatever or whomever they find. Still there are adventurers who will try to probe the depths of this world of horror and insanity.

Artifacts of Outpost 632
  1. Sphere of Arrogoh - This sphere allows the user to peer through time and space for 1d4 hours. The user may learn secrets and dangerous things. The sphere however will suck 1d6 years from the user's life. Unless save vs death is made each time the thing is used.
  2. The Vows of Hagu - This book of silver gold plates shows the user the map of their souls but each time its read or a character is moved on the device. The user is changed and continues to in very odd and weird ways
  3. The Objects of Soaga - This set of strange plastic pieces allows the user to manipulate matter and the atomic struct of objects but they become a part of those objects as well.
  4. The Verses of Astrovelcu - This metal book relates the rise of the Krell but not their fall. The book will begin adding 1d4 points of intelligence and wisdom every other round unless a save vs wands is made. The user's head will explode in 10 rounds unless they stop reading which they don't want to.
  5. The Temptations of Z'nahlu - This device will change the user's shape to anything.Anything at all. Getting back to his or her's original form is another matter the device is partially broken.
  6. The Visions of Hothaboth - The user's mind and vision will expand without limit. They gain the psy navigator skill and all that goes with it.

New Post Apocalyptic Sci Fi Trailer - Oblivion

New Post Apocalyptic Sci Fi Trailer with Tom Cruise. Looks like a post space invasion movie with lots of odd over the top surreal imagery like something out of Planet of the Apes. The flick looks alright. Here's the movie poster here

This might be "Gamma World The Movie". This certainly has potential and it could be interesting. So we'll wait and see where this one is going to go.
Here are a few more images and its as I said very interesting.

Might provide some ideas for a post apocalyptic game or two. So lets take a look in a month or so  when the hype begins to heat up.

Marvel 2001 Comic Book, Stars Without Number, And The Highway Men Campaign - Meeting With Rama Blues

After a three week hiatus from my Stars Without Number's game thinks are back on track with my players. One of whom has been working lots of hours(which he'll take whenever he can get in this economy). So I've waited in the meantime last night I unleashed some of what I've come up with on the PCs. The party is aboard a Rama style spacecraft/station that Apex Medical (Making A Better Future For All Man Kind). They've explored the ruined docking/spacecraft facility and have penetrated into the inner skin of the craft.   The aesthetic of the place is akin to Event Horizon meets Marvel 2001 .
The party explored various rooms and began their descent into the science wing of the engineering facility
Abandon apartments and various facilities greeted them.

They found the lab spaces and the Bruce 9012 unit A.I. which controlled the facility. One of the PCs almost bought in the labs as various systems came on line "mysteriously" Then there were the engineering androids that kept the party busy. They were SWN standard androids but man the party had fun busting heads and getting into full combat with the bastards as they opened up with blasters.

Engineering Android - Standard Apex Medical Facility Issue
Created By The Delos Corporation Under Contract To Apex
 Armor Class : 7
 Hit Dice 1/2 (4HP)
Attack Bonus +1
Number Appearing 1d4

Saving Throw 15 +
Move 30'
Morale 12
Skill Bonus +1

A group of Apex Engineering Androids Waiting to "Help" some PCs
The Bruce 9012 unit tried a couple of times to "murder" the party. Opening various labs, an air lock or two, then trapping them in a lab with a menace straight out of the Deviant Database. The PZZttt made an appearance last night as an alien menace of the week freaking one of the NPCs a cyborg who simply ran away. Leaving the PCs up to their necks.

The PCs hated the PFrzt  as it danced around one of the labs. They fired on it, danced with it, and finally laser wielded the lab where it was shut!

The monster was less then amused as the PCs hurried away from the lab as destruction reigned in the place! They wandered into disection rooms for psychics and then it was verging on 1:00 am!

Highway Men Redux Notes This game was important to me and my players it proved to me that I can covert the various Goblinoid game products over to Stars Without Numbers and use them effectively within the confines of "original" material. The Pfrzt was the perfect alien menace for a mid level game. You can find all of Sniderman's original monsters in the Deviant Database and the cool entry on this menace over Here

They have no idea of the fresh side of hell that their headed into. Wheels within Wheels here. To  be continued ! These guys are waiting up ahead for the PCs

Next up The Nightlands, The Inner Earth, And The Mucoid Menace!

Star Trek Into The Darkness Trailer - Slightly Different

Well the new Star Trek Into The Darkness Trailer has hit the interwebs and then there's this one (The Japanese version) which CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS!
I'm very excited and very disappointed that this gives some much of the plot away. The voice over sounds like Sir Patrick Stewart and that's a good thing. Its Mr.Cumberpatch.  Again I'm going to have to get a wait & see attitude with the film. This is an alternative time line so well see.
However its a bit of an exciting time to be a Alternative Trekker fan !?!
That being said there are already four instances where the DM in me is going I can use that!
  1. The warp planes over head. That looks interesting
  2. The fact that warp ship is rising from the waters. Something I've not thought of.
  3. The dungeon location looks very cool and what the hell are those fast growing plant/alien things. Red Weed from War of The Worlds?
  4. City destruction is always a plus and in it goes

Tower of the Scarlet Wizard By James M.Ward - Review & Commentary

The Tower Of The Scarlet Wizard is the latest adventure from the twisted mind of Jame M. Ward. It presents & pulls you in right from the starting blurb on the back of the book. Here's the blurb from Drivethrurpg:

A mysterious and magical message literally drops into your lap from the very air.  Unsettled by the experience, you nevertheless open it.  It seems that there is a tower at the center of a nearby town, packed with magical items and untold riches... and it seems YOU have inherited this tower!

                                                  Well...  almost.
You are one of several cousins vying for ownership of this magnificent edifice.  The task seems simple: convince the servants of the tower that you are the rightful owner.  Once all of the tower's servants have sworn fealty, the tower, and its riches, are yours.
It sounds too good to be true... So it probably is.
The Tower of the Scarlet Wizard is a system-less adventure using generic terminology that should convert easily for use with most fantasy role playing systems.  It is designed for 3 or more thinking players of moderate experience level.
Those characters that survive will have a new base of operations, better than any room at an inn.  Those who forget to pack their wits along with the rest of their gear should probably have their wills in order before making the attempt.
It’s a 24-page adventure written by  game designer James Ward, edited by Tim Kask and Christopher Clark, and with interior art from Chris Clark too. The cover design is by Dave Peterson and Chris Clark.
Introduction :
This product throws a party into the deep end of the Scarlet Wizard's Tower.
This is  a jam packed 24 page James Ward old school adventure in the vein of the old Tsr products. The whole plot pulls you right into the world of the tower. There's lots going on here.  Right off the bat on page three there's an overview of everything the DM needs to get the PC's right into the thick of things. The overview is needed because this is a very "adventure dense" product. Not in the sense that there's lots of magic items, spells, etc. In the sense that if the party doesn't pay attention there will be a reckoning.
The product is well laid out with its maps, artwork, etc all adding to the flavor of the product.
The author seems to have really allowed himself some creative free reign here & gotten into the heart of his world. This product feels like a test set for another possible campaign world from Mr. Ward. I for one want to see a box set.

The  Ten Main Uses For Tower Of The Scarlet Wizard

  1. This isn't simply a one night adventure the puzzles, traps, tricks, etc are all built for an extended session or three of play. This twenty four page adventure feels like a mini campaign in places. This is a very nicely put together adventure.
  2. Lots of new magic items, setting material, etc. which can all be used for lots of other DM projects as well to flesh out a setting. The adventure has its own tone, flavour, ideas.
  3. There are secrets here and used correctly they lead to other campaign worlds or even a world spanning adventure
  4. This adventure could be used for both a traditional OSR game or even a space fantasy with the right preparation
  5. This is a deadly little adventure & one mis step & your PCs are dead meat. Its not a grinder but a very well thought out adventure where the player characters will get themselves killed
  6. This is a nice campaign introduction adventure that can translate one set of PCs into another level of play.
  7. There are new spells, monsters, items, all well thought out & laid out in this one. They have the traditional "Ward touch" to them as well.
  8. Several dangling plot hooks are available to the DM to not only continue this adventure but to tie it in with their own existing world. This is a good thing in my opinion
  9. The feel of the adventure is classic James Ward & is fresh, easy to use, & solid in every respect. I enjoyed reading this one & will enjoy running it.
  10. Well worth the price of admission & its on sale over at Drivethru right over Here

    1. How To Use The Tower Of The Scarlet Wizard
The adventure is designed to fit into any retroclone adventure system. This has the potential to be run quite easily with something like Lamentations of The Flame Princess. The whole adventure though would fit into something like Labyrith Lord or Swords & Wizardry much easier. The potential for solid pulp adventuring is right there . This one could be run in a world like one that dripped from the pen of Fritz Leiber quite easily. The NPCs, the items, and the setting are right there for an easy fit.
The only problem I see is running this with something like Carcosa. The whole adventure would have to be retro fitted & made more horrifying then it already is. It could be done.
Potentially though with a bit of work & twisting of elements this could easily be fit into  Trey's Old World setting. There might need to be some adjustments but this could easily be transported over to an alternative universe where magic is a reality & science. The adventure is really that flexible.
All in all well worth the money.

Free Space Fantasy Dungeon ~ Dungeon From a Distant Star (OSR Adventure Location)

Meed a free one page dungeon for your space fantasy campaign? Need one that converts to all the major sci fi retroclones on the market. One with lots of little encounters in one page but yet has the potential to turn into a campaign into itself?
 From the blurb itself
Buried underground for hundreds of years lies a spaceship from the 3rd planet in the Altair system. While heavily damaged, the ship still has power for many of its systems and doors and lights are still fully operational in most sections. Will you be the first to explore The Dungeon From A Distant Star and uncover it's otherworldly secrets?
An old school one-page dungeon including dungeon map, legend, wandering monsters, random tables and descriptions for 23 separate rooms.
This one page retro clone dungeon is by Stuart Robertson a name pretty well known in OSR circles.
The dungeon make a great blue print for how to design your own dungeon space locations & just the right amount of hooks, traps, monsters, etc.
You can best of all down load the whole thing for free.

Bascially this adventure/location could be used with any retroclone system. The author really knocked it out of the park in my humble opinion
