Welcome to another fun filled roller coaster ride of an issue of Grendal vs The Shadow from the twisted and rain swept alleys of Matt Wagner's mind and pen via Dark Horse comics! This is the second issue of what looks to be one of the better titles of vs to come out this year!
The artwork is top notch and Wagner is at the top of his game never mind Hunter Rose or the Shadow, here the graphic comic Noir artwork drips off of the page filled with the violence and depravity of the world of the Depression era Shadow. Each page looks like it could be a still from an unproduced movie and I love the framing of the characters against the backdrop of this comic/graphic novel.



This isn't the devil you know but the Hunter Rose that I'd hoped to have seen. He's at the top of his game and deadly as sin in this book. He's every bit the vile anti hero in a world that is custom made for his machinations and substance.

The Shadow is fresh right off of the latest Street and Smith pulp story here and the encounters are nasty as sin. He's in all of his glory in this comic. The powers, the .45's and more are all right there and ready to jump off of the page in spades. 

Here is a dance worthy of the over thirteen pages of fighting and nastiness in a Noir Pulp throw down with energy bleeding off the page from the Wagner dynasty.  The  art is fantastic and I'd love to have some of the comic artwork on my wall.

The Hero and Anti hero here are matched and its all about the hunt in a sense but there is genuine menace and hints of pure hatred in turns throughout the entire work. The colours are impressive as the artwork and the talent of the Wagner clan is on full display in spades in this issue.


Everything about this issue was worth the price of admission from start to finish and I can't wait to sink my teeth into the next issue.

So on a one to one basis for a second issue this is a pretty damn strong entry. The Wagner family is very talented and Matt certainly knows his pulp and noir heroes as well. This is really an excercise in visual and writing as well as story & how I wish this was a Christmas block buster coming out. Everything about this comic from the small background jokes and in references to the strong follow through with the characters gives this comic as one of the must grabs off the rack.
 Seriously you need to grab these issues if A.your a Grendal or Shadow fan or if your into any of the pulp heroes its a very well thought out and incredibly well crafted graphic violence symphony of pulp incredibleness.
Its Matt Wagner's birthday but thanks for the delivery of a great new issue of one of my favorite comics this year so far.

The Shadow Year One Mini Series By Matt Wagner For Your Old School Campaigns

Well its finally finished and I've just gotten around to getting this series read after borrowing the issues off of my friend Peter. This is the Shadow mini series by Matt Wagner and it really sets up everything that we know and love about the Shadow. Every old trope and angle of the character is here but new and different as well. The whole series is like a breath of fresh Noir coloured air in an age when the pulp indicative can seem old & somewhat tired. Not so here. The page explodes with vibrant art and the creators know their eras. 

Here we are introduced once again to Margo Lane, the double deals, agents, and the power to cloud men's minds. Yet its done with Wagner's pulp style, artwork, and sense of the power of the Shadow and it evokes a sense that in every issue there is going to be more of that foreshadowing of the character. This is the Shadow we need and want as an audience. The events of the series churn with excitement and explode across the page in wonderful art. 

Here's a single panel from the series and you can see and feel the emotions of the seconds of violence that are ready to explode in an adrenaline filled moment that any second will be released across the page to be planted in our imaginations. 
Wagner is in top form & events of this series foreshadow the events of Grendel vs The Shadow even though the series are completely unrelated. Well sort of. 



We are given the Shadow in his 30's element with all of the power of the pulps sweeping across the page with a mix of art and style as much as the statement of  the art of the comic book artist and writer here. The mobsters & villains are vile as well as heinously evil.
These folks deserve every well placed bullet, punch, and hate that the Shadow can muster but this isn't going to be an easy fight and its not. 
But yet the mystic side of the Shadow is brought in time and again. While his abilities give him an edge the all too human element of Lamont is right behind the man as well. We as an audience are given a fully realized Shadow and this one would make a hell of a movie.

The dialogue is top notch, the action kick ass, and the artwork as well as the settings drip down with the series pulp roots. This is a fun series to read and pleasure to look at visually because of the pulp comic book eye candy.
I was very lucky to get the chance to read through this one. I personally think you might enjoy it as well. 

The Shadow Year One Mini Series

Year One from a visual reference stand point for a pulp style old school campaign is a perfect reference point. The ladies fashions look incredible, the locations of the Thirties drip off of the page and a DM worth his salt would be a fool not to look into some of the pulp threads that dangle at the end of this series. Heaven help the PC's if they cross .45's  with the Shadow.

Year One is a visual treat and winds its way through the hero's struggles with all of he elements that will come to define the Shadow as a pulp heroic corner stone. For a  Call of Cthulhu reference point this one might leave the Keeper looking and the DM might want to look instead into Dynamite's The Shadow Over Innesmouth instead. If the DM is looking for a blue print for a set of heroes to struggle against an empire of crime and corruption this might be up their alley.
This series has everything that one might find in the rain slicked streets, the evil of the vilest of villains, and Matt Wagner's sense of the Shadow that weaves its way throughout this mini series until the final bullets spray across the page. All in all this is a hell of a ride for the Shadow fan or pulp slut like myself. 

Comic Book Review - GRENDEL VS. THE SHADOW #1 By Matt Wagner From Dark Horse

Matt Wagner created the original incarnation of Grendal  Hunter Rose back in the 80's for Comico, the character whose tragic history is the first of a blood soaked stepping stone of the Grendal legend has remained a favorite of mine forever.
Now over the last couple of years of the late two thousands Matt has been dealing with the pulp corner stone hero 'The Shadow" over at Dynamite Entertainment whose comics have been using every public domain super hero in their comics rather well. These books have included 'The Shadow'.  So it only seems natural that they'd combined the two into a thinking man's 'vs' title. This story line does not break or screw around with the contingency of the Grendel Hunter Rose events, if anything it enhances it.
 According the Dark Horse byline : 

Sparks fly and bullets blaze when the original Grendel, Hunter Rose, is transported to 1930s New York and faces off with the original dark-night avenger, the Shadow! Two pulp-noir icons go head to head in this three-issue prestige-format series written and drawn by legendary Grendel creator Matt Wagner.

The ideas here are pulptastic and the background artwork is full of bits and pieces that are a love letter to the pulp that Mr. Wagner loves so dearly. Its the little touches such as the Universal Mummy film playing in the background of issue one when Grendal makes an appearance. The Shadow here is in top form and as dangerous as he comes. The byplay between the two would make a wonderful film ala Sin City. But that's just this humble writer's opinion. The art work is very well done if your into Wagner's take on the characters and I'm. 

Everything about this issue sets up the events to come and the story telling is tight, the take on the characters is spot on and this is really a pleasure to read and a nice break from the hum drum of some of the other market efforts that I've seen lately. Each of the characters here is right within their pulp elements and in top form. The pulp era of  'The Shadow' is perfectly made for Hunter Rose. 

Matt does a really nice bit of character evolution as Hunter Rose adapts, confronts, and deals with the 1930's head on. This is Rose's element and he's enjoying every blood soaked noir second of it. 

The bits of him that we really get to see make Wagner's return to his character a nice bit of added punch to his creation and artwork. 

For me the pulp slut that I'm, this has been one of September's more wonderful little noir treats. Its nice to see Matt Wagner in full blood soaked bloom here. The action is very well done and the ideas are fresh as a rose. I can't wait to see issue two. If you love you Noir dark and with an intelligent story grab this one and follow this mini series which looks like its going to be a bloody brilliant and homicidal pulpy fun ride.
