The Free OSR Adventure Resource - Tales from the Laughing Dragon: A Dragonclaw Adventure As Adventure Fodder For Your Old School Science Fiction Campaign

So with OD&D being the basis for several games out there surely there isn't a free low level adventure that could be used introduce your old school space scum to some back water planet?  Well there actually is a very well done one for the Basic Fantasy Rpg and its free.

A desperate bit to save a kingdom upon a remote colony world in a backwater providence as the forces of evil threaten the planet. Only a brand of brave outer world adventurers can save us all. Are you those brave souls? Sound like the latest in the Star Wars saga or Battle Star Galactica? Or perhaps an old pulp sci fi novel? Nope. Instead its simply an old twist and trick that any DM has done in the past. Take an existing fantasy adventure and add in your favorite science fantasy crew. In this case the easily ported, DC1 Tales From The Laughing Dragon. There are several reasons why this works, one this is a low level series of adventures and have the same feel as a space opera, the events place the PC's into the deep end of Dragon Claw system errm barony. And their  presented as three sequential adventures set in the back end of the campaign enabling the DM to fill in the science fantasy issues as needed.

Grab It For Free Right Over

The humanoid races become alien races, there are number of giant monsters that don't need to be explained this after all an alien planet. Add in a star port near the town of Dale minimal facilities and well your pretty much ready to go.  The ruins stay as is and simply need to be fleshed out with a few more exotic failed colony bits and your pretty much ready to go.

The goblins and orc forces are a very easy fit for this adventure and can easily be ported over with little to no problems. Everything in the adventure can easily be ported over to a slightly better then average primitive backwater planet. All three of these adventures start in a cantina ermm bar. Yet these are not hack & slash adventures some thinking is required on the part of the adventurers. Hence why your psychic warriors and space knight types might be required. Sure there's plenty of action but some serious thought is going to have to be put in.

Add in some space teddy bear rangers, and your ready to go! But don't forget the giant spiders as well. There's a secondary & possibly much better OSR option in the form of Jason Vey's Free OD&D Star Wars Supplement. Here's where the rubber hits the X wings! All of usual Star Wars suspects are here & its cross compatible with everything already within this blog post!

With the Mandolorian hitting hard on the nostalgia buttons its not hard to see where & when this style of high space adventure could hit an OSR campaign note! All of this campaign formula is completely compatible with Warriors of the Red Planet or
Dungeons & Dragons Warriors of Mars
Warriors of the Red Planet [BUNDLE] - Night Owl Workshop ...

Boil all of this in hot simmering pot of White Star & your ready to go with only players needed to be added into the kitchen soup of a mix. Giving the DM a complete run of everything they need for OSR interstellar adventure!

The Free OSR Monster Resource - The Basic Fantasy Field Guide As Fodder For Your Science Fiction or Science Fantasy Campaign

The Basic Fantasy Rpg has some fantastic free resources, today we're going to slice under the skin of the Basic Fantasy Field Guide.

I've gotten argued to the ground over some points about one of my favorite monster manuals, the Basic Field Guide is an excellent go to monster book for any OD&D style campaign, one shot adventure, convention short set adventure. Whatever your needs are.
So its an excellent resource for your fantasy rpg dungeon crawls but did you ever consider using it for your old school science fiction or science fantasy adventures?
Grab It Right Over
HERE
Alright given the breath and range of monsters in this book its easy to see that these horrors can easily be inserted into a science fiction or science fantasy adventure landscape. Many of these horrors can easily be slipped into the background of your favorite adventures. There are a few little things to keep in mind with The Basic Fantasy Field Guide, the explanations for their statistics are given in the front. They appear alphabetically. But a second list in the back lists them by hit dice which makes it easier to deal with at the table on the fly. Since this is a retroclone based on OD&D this book will work with Stars Without Number, convert over to Mutant Future D&D optional rules, and the new kid on the block the White Star Rpg system. These monsters add in a bit more Krull or Empire Strikes Back creature features to old school adventures. The Basic Fantasy Field Guide is a resource that I've also used in the past as a Spelljammer resource as well.

There are a number of resources that I've used from Vaults of Pandius website, that uses multiple platform editions across the board right over HERE  And there are further resources right over HERE . These monsters range from the weird to the silly but their very well done.

Because these monsters are perfect for the dungeon, these monsters are easily used for space hulks, ruins, spelljammer ships, flying saucers, planet side ruins and bases, and the post apocalyptic wastelands of a failed colony planets.

There are number of hazards that can easily take the place of minor hazards and monsters in the space lanes and also bedevil adventurers in the wastelands of the post apocalyptic landscape as well. You'll know which ones I'm talking about as soon as you crack the book or pdf. These low and mid level monsters can take the place of Mynock style creatures to cause issues with your space going or Mad Max style campaigns. Make no mistake these types of horrors can be real pains in the necks and will require fire, bullets, and blasters in equal measure. This being said I truly think that James Raggi might be right and monsters should be used sparingly in some encounters. Common sense monster ecology easily applies for alien life forms and weird dungeon horror in space as well.
Make no mistake that there are some major horrors that can take out adventurers quite easily.

All in all the Basic Field Guide is a very unrated and appreciated resource that can add another layer of monstery goodness to your old school science fiction or science fantasy campaigns.

Swords, Sorcery, And OSR Fan Based Stars Wars - Your Way Part III With These Free Downloads For Your Old School Campaign

This is part III and perhaps the final part of this series of posts because it's now edging into the more recent end of posts from a friend's blog. David Bay Miller does excellent material for any number of OSR and OD&D style campaign. He's recently done a very quick and brief overview of any number star ships and extra PC classes for the White Star Rpg system which capture the flavor of both the Marvel Stars Wars comics and the expanded universe quite well. You can find any number of his stuff right over HERE
I've seen several opinions about the White Star Game rpg system being a complete entity unto itself and being able to be run with little problem and while I totally agree with that sentiment.Just about every DM I know is going to run the game and begin tinkering with it right straight out of the gate. They'll add, subtract, and twist, fold, and mutilate the hell of out the system. White Star is based on Swords & Wizardry. There are number of PC options out there for the game system and a good chunk of these are free. You can find material on that subject right over HERE
Hell if you want xeno archaeologists and adventurers you can easily download from Ancient Mysteries & Lost Treasures - Modern exploration & adventure in the Indiana Jones tradition.

As for padding out a very fast pulp style campaign there are any number of fan theories that can be exploited to produce some really incredible 'what if' Star Wars campaign adventure settings.
I find myself right here saying yeah give White Star a chance & there are some really awesome things that can be done with it. The system is pretty much an open tool kit and can be exploited any number of ways. You can find some of the more extreme fan theories right over HERE
It's this, or he had a death wish...

I've often taken the extreme alternative campaign route in the past, basically these would be Marvel style 'What if' campaign worlds. For example we know all about the Empire Strikes Back and this little issue:
In Empire Strikes back, Darth Vader is looking at an image of the rebel shield generator on the planet Hoth and states "That's it! The Rebels are there, and I'm sure Skywalker is with them!". It bothered me that Vader was searching for Luke Skywalker even before the Emperor tells him that the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star was his son. The opening text crawl of the movie says that Darth Vader, intent on finding Luke Skywalker, has dispatched probe drones to the far reaches of the galaxy. It hit me that Vader already knew about Skywalker. That he must've known that he was living with his old family, on his home planet, within walking distance of his old master and arch nemesis Obi-Wan Kenobi. He must've known that Obi-Wan could not possibly resist training the young Skywalker in hopes of bringing down Vader and the Emperor. Vader counted on this. He couldn't possibly train Luke right in front of the Emperor. So he let Kenobi train him in hopes of turning him. Now here's the kicker. For the preceding 20 years, Vader has resented and hated the Emperor for fooling him to the dark side, for using him as a pawn. His hope was that his old master would bring him Luke, ready to help him defeat the Emperor and free him from the bondage he had been tricked into. "And together we will rule the galaxy as father and son..."
Original credit for the above comment to
Mike Cotterman
I did something like this with West End's Star Wars Rpg years ago and enabled a very interesting take on things as the PC's struggled to get back to their own regular universe.
Well if we actually flip the focus from Luke to Leia mix around who the Emperor might really be then we get a very different out come and one that can be exploited quite nicely for a vastly different universe in a galaxy far, far, away.
The reason that so many Star Wars DM's don't like to adher to the Star Wars setting and background is the same for gaming in the Marvel universe. One can easily get force choked by the very setting that your trying to exploit to game in. This is a problem that frequently crops up in any number of old school rpg's and one of the reasons that I've actively seen DM's time and again create their own settings for their games.
The  idea of spinning out a campaign universe from whole cloth isn't easy to do but using an alternative line of fannon what if history frees the DM to paint NPC's, historical fictional events, etc.,etc. in the way that they want. It also gives the true 'expert's' and diehard fans nosebleeds trying to figure out where your going with your campaigns. And this keeps your players coming back again and again.
This is blog post is not meant as a trade mark or copyright violation or challenge to either Star Wars or its franchises or the White Star Rpg system. This blog post is for entertainment purposes only. Artwork used without permission, all material by David Bay Miller his own. Cheers and happy gaming.

Swords, Sorcery, And OSR Fan Based Stars Wars - Your Way Part II With These Free Downloads For Your Old School Campaign

Everything I'm about to talk about is available right over HERE over on the right hand side under downloads.

There a number of free OSR Swords and Wizardry science fantasy downloads that help to fill in the gaps of the White Star rpg system. Because the Sword +1 blog has been around for quite awhile and the author has dipped his toe into the stream with Ruins and Ronin, he's created any number of fantastic free downloads that can help round out the White Star rpg system especially if your looking to do some of the expanded universe Stars Wars fan based campaigns. Boarding Action #1 contains a ton of additional equipment that can round out any White Star ship's inventory quite easily. For alien races there are two fully developed ones right in the downloads section Boarding Action: Fomorians (Aliens) and Boarding Action: Lemurians (Aliens). These make fine additions to any game campaign as well. For a completely different take on a Jedi knight style PC class there's the HSE Psymurai Class. OD&D Space Fantasy hits all of the highlights of the science fantasy genre and adds in a number of nice twists that can easily be added to any OD&D style campaign. There are number of Ruin and Ronin style PC classes that can help round out your roster of space heroes as well especially the Head hunter, Kensi, and Ninja which can add in a bit more PC flare as supporting characters to a party of desperate space adventurers.

For a Cyberpunk style campaign set of post modern options down load every single thing in the Resistance line of free products. This is some very well developed material and will fit right in with your one cybernetically  gifted warriors and space wizards. Good stuff which can also be used with any number of old school science fiction retroclone systems that use OD&D or Swords and Wizardry as their base. Especially those that are trying to emulate a time in a system far, far, away in another galaxy.

This is some very well done material that can help to round out your White Star Campaigns and is easily adapted across the board into any number of old school science fantasy or science fiction rpg campaigns.
This is blog post is not meant as a trade mark or copyright violation or challenge to either Star Wars or its franchises or the White Star Rpg system. This blog post is for entertainment purposes only. The +1 sword blog has been one of my go to sources for science fantasy and fiction goodness for many years.

Swords, Sorcery, And OSR Fan Based Stars Wars - Your Way With Two Free Downloads - Starlog Presents: The Official Star Wars Technical Journal Vol 3: The Rebel Forces & Vol. 2: The Imperial Forces

So I hear a ton about doing your own OSR  Star Wars games, well there are a boatload  of options out there in the OSR for running an old school games set in an alternative version of the SW universe. Everything from the styling Galactic Adventures retroclone adventures can still be downloaded right over HERE for really easy OD&D Imperial or Jedi action. To using your favorite retro clone system and adding in either Jedi or Imperial forces. There are two free downloads that I've used in the past which in the privacy of your own home are perfect resources to get the Force flowing. Starlog Magazine produced two very nice overviews for both Rebel Forces and Empires in the form of the Starlog Presents: The Official Star Wars Technical Journal Vol 3: The Rebel Forces & Vol. 2: The Imperial Forces. These were nicely produced  and very well done slick magazine products back in the 90's and were perfect for presenting some very cool, quick one night adventures.

HERE

For the forces of vile villainy in the Star Wars universe there of course is the Imperial forces book which covers all of the classic 1970's and 80's era Empire's war machine.
You can easily pit your heroes against the forces of the Empire in some far off corner of the SW expanded universe of your own design and easily avoid the whole issue of  'Star Wars trivia glut'. A tactic which I've used whist running Star Wars D6 West End rpg systems back in the far off parsecs of yesteryear.

Grab It Right Over
My advice when running any adventures in the Star Wars universe is to make the PC's the main focus and to set it outside the film franchises themselves enabling the PC's to really shine. There are so many holes, plot points etc. That PC's could easily have a campaign lasting years and only scratch the surface.
So what does this mean for those who wish to use these books for the White Star rpg system? Well its quite simple your going to need the Swords and Wizardry rpg to round out some of the creatures, forces, and ideas that are presented in this series of reference books for running an old school Star Wars based campaign set. Lots of the material presented here might be considered dated and somewhat out of Star Wars context but there's plenty under the hood to make this well worth your while. Much of the material here can be used, taken, and used as resources for many of the ideas for fannon Star Wars rather then straight out of the box based adventures. The fact that White Star hearkens back to the Marvel Star Wars comics in my mind is a plus. The White Star system seems to thrive on house ruling and planetary romance adventures. Any of the ideas here are going to to be for a desperate group of adventurers against a boat load of really nasty forces here.
So this blog post is for entertainment purposes only by a fanatical Star Wars guy and is for entertainment purposes only. This is not an attempt to violate the copyright and trademarks of the Star Wars franchise or the White Star rpg system. Neither of these properties is cut from whole cloth but would work very well together to emulate the type of OD&D style games that we dreamed about playing in grade school back in the Seventies.

Star Wars Tie Fighter Fan Short Film As Fodder For Your Old School Campaigns

If your a Star Wars fan and you haven't seen this really wonderful piece of animation then you don't know what your missing. Animator Paul Johnson has been working on an Empire inspired 80's anime style seven minute short that pulls on the traditions of shows like Robotech, and other anime classics for this wonderful little short.
According to what I found on the net - Animator Paul Johnson has labored the past four years in his spare time animating an anime-inspired “Star Wars” fan film entitled TIE Fighter that shows a space battle from the POV of the Empire, humanizing the Stormtrooper pilots and even making them heroes!

A shorter version of this short set to different music has existed on the web for several years, but this is the first time TIE Fighter has been shown in its seven-minute entirety.
Here’s what Johnson had to say about it: “Don’t support me on Patreon, because I don’t have one! And don’t donate to my Kickstarter, because I don’t have one of those either. Instead, if you enjoyed this, give someone at your workplace, uni, school or whatever a random bar of chocolate or can or Coke or something. Seriously, it’ll probably make their day. That would totally make my day.”
Original story right over HERE
This short takes the Empire's Imperial forces and humanizes them and comes complete with signature characters, implied back story, and more. Seriously this is a solid way of making me almost sympathize with the Empire. Notice I said almost though.  Even though this pulls from the same mental cloth as may of the 80's and 90's Japaneseanimation imports from a bygone era. There is something decidedly weird about rooting for the Empire and goes against the grain of the the Star Wars fan in me. That being said, this is a utterly brilliant little short and the animator deserves an award for his utterly brilliant fan film. Could this be used as the backdrop for a old school Star Wars rpg campaign? Absolutely it could be used as a rather brilliant back story for an old school rpg campaign or adventure. tie fighter

Many of the ships, equipment, etc. are all ships that have appeared in both the West End Star Wars books or the D20 material. The story and animation has enough meat to really pull some great ideas from the back drop and whip them around to produce a rather enduring long term campaign.

The animation is tight, the story brilliant, the characters interesting and this is something that I'd watch but there's something that pulls at my conscience. Its somehow wrong that I'm rooting for the Empire. All in all this is a rather great idea for a campaign and one that I'm sort of filing away for the future.

Marvel Star Wars/Carcosa Mash up Game Actual Play Part Five - Finding The U.S.S. John Brown

The PC's in last night's mash up game have blundered into one of the Outer Systems of my Carcosa campaign. The system has a serious set of gas giants, dead worlds, and the wreck of thousands of alien ships. These are worlds that the Outer Gods have toyed with and Nyarlathotep has simply discarded. They are worlds of insanity and pure depravity. Places not sane being would venture.
Floating amid the wreckage of a million worlds are the larva of the Outer Gods. Some of which are easily able to crush an Imperial Shuttle with impunity. Not to mention drive the Jedi within insane with a glance.
The laser cannons were used a couple of times to discourage curious tendrils a couple of times.
The PC's were receiving radio signals from a source deep in the shadow of one of the moons of a nearby gas giant.
The group needed to take real stock of the situation while dodging the advances of some of the more aggressive Larva.
So with a few minor course corrections it was off to the shadow for a break against the Lovecraftian horrors without.

Exploration Of The John Brown

What the found in the shadow of that moon shocked the players as well as their character. The wreckage of the U.S.S.John Brown. Over a year ago, some of my players had played in a SWN campaign employing this very class of ship. And now floating out in space dead was the remain of  The U.S.S. John Brown. Sensor scans revealed some life signs aboard. The readings were weird and gave the PC's pause. There was more going on here then they were happy with. Force scans revealed presences but because of the proximity of the Larva of the Outer Gods the players were very wary of opening their mind to the insanity.
A nearby asteroid provided the coverage that the players needed to make preparations to board the ship. Some of the PC's kept eyes on that ship at all times even though she was a wreck. They knew here compliment of weaponry from scans and were wary to say the least.
We ended with them beginning a space walk over to the ship's wreckage.
1d10 Random Finds of the Muthreu Outer Systems
  1. A 20 hit point undead horror made up of the amalgamated alien dead of  hundreds of worlds all screaming the praises of the Outer Gods
  2. An ancient temple of the Outer Gods where the psychic echoes of a million long dead worshipers still chant in the void. There are lights across it's face as it tumbles through the void.
  3. A single ruined city tumbling in the lonely dark and distant streets teem with millions of alien psychic ghosts. They scream soundlessly in the void. There are powerful psychic emanations from the city's surface indicating artifacts of remarkable aspect.
  4. A strange alien ruin whose surface glows with embers of radioactivity and horror. There are 1d7 dimensional shamblers moving across it's surface.
  5. A 6 hit point probe of The Great Race of Yith searching for artifacts and victims to the time travelers. It its armed with heavy stunners that do 1d4 points of damage to their victims temporarily. The probe has a micro laser cannon that hits for 4 points of damage as well. The thing is easily distracted however.
  6. A giant cloud of organic material floats on the stellar winds. The material is worth 20,000 credits to a group of planetary terraformers but there is a 50% chance of a Larva of Outer Gods coming to feed on the stuff.
  7. A trapped sorcerer of the Outer Gods spins through the void in a crystal of cut and faceted damnation. He has been cursed by Nyarlathotep. An 8 point alien lich should he escape.
  8. A sleeping Star Spawn of Cthulhu tumbles past. There is a small alien city that lays in ruins at the thing's feet in the ice.
  9. The wreckage of some nameless alien star ship tended by damned ghuls. The thing flies past as the crew go about their business. There is a 40% chance of their being 1d6 salvageable star ship parts aboard.
  10. The wreckage of a ship worth millions tumbles through the void. The catch is that it is home to a Larva of The Outer Gods that uses it like a giant hermit crab.

Marvel Star Wars/Carcosa Rpg Mash Up Using The OD&D rules - Actual Play Game Session Part III

 Previous session HERE
Free Resources For Carcosa and Star Wars
HERE
Tonight's session had the characters on the run again from the ghul horde and sealing bulk heads behind them. The  PC's made it into the hangers and sealed doors behind them as they were dealing with a horde controlled by a Boneman sorcerer.
The background is that this sorcerer was a prisoner aboard the ship on his way to an Imperial research facility. He'd been released along with some other prisoners.
The PCs were a bit skeptical of the Imperial shuttle they found. And also they didn't want this plauge to get out into the normal space lanes.
So it became apparent they were going to have to blow the reactor. The PC who'd become infected with ghul plague last session volunteered to stay behind and allow the PC's to escape.
The PC's sealed the fetish in the Captain's cabin and others began prep work to get the shuttle operational.

The infected PC had a fun time crawling through ventilation shafts and dealing with the occasional ghuls roaming the halls below him. It was tense going made only more tense by the following encounter table.
Roll on the chart every three rounds to keep things interesting.

1d10 Random Ventilation Encounters Chart
  1. 1d4 skinless ghul stormtroopers crawling through the metal shafts. They make a horrid sound as they claw their way towards you.
  2. An air hose let's loose. Lose a round as the thing scares your PC needlessly
  3. A half eaten body part. There is a 10% chance of being infected by ghul plague if handling it. There's a lovely ring with an expensive looking gem on the end of the middle digit
  4. A storm trooper ghul bursts through a side ventilation shaft. It means to devour you and it's so very hungry.
  5. A sticky imperial blaster rifle with half ammo.
  6. A series of random noises and the ship lurches this way and that.  You seem to be spinning for a moment.
  7. A cry for help comes from a side shaft.  It's a trap! The pleading cry leads to 1d6 ghuls! They lie in wait for any fool answering this call.
  8. A very hungry and leg less horror crawls its way toward your PC!
  9. An imperial stormtrooper helmet, it appears intact! But there's a ghul head inside! If you move it. There is a 20% chance it will attack and try to bite. It can only do this once.
  10. A ghul horde of 1d10 monsters has broken into the shaft and they will do anything to reach you.
The PC's got the shuttle going just as a ghul horde burst into the room from another ventilation shaft! They flooded the room with the shuttle's engines just as their colleague reach engineering!

Tarvis Raltha valiantly fought the horde he found in engineering and then died a hero's death by plunging his light saber into a near by plasma tank on the reactor. The ship started to blow and the shuttle seemed to break free of the Destroyer's gravity well.
~ BOOM! ~
The other Jedi began the careful task of searching the shuttle and while the thing was fully equipped they began the task of going over the whole ship.
The PC's had no idea where they were but we ended the session with the jedi looking out the window and seeing this.

Free Marvel Star Wars/Carcosa Rpg Mash Up Resources

 Star Wars Marvel comic cover

So here's a list of free resources that I cribbed for my cross over game from the last couple of weeks. I'm not the author of any of these but they seemed to work well together with a bit of tinkering here and there.

The Jedi Class as I've said is from the Original D&D discussion board HERE
The author of the Doomed World of Carcosa blog hasn't updated in a long time now but there are a ton of free pdf's that he did to enhance an Carcosa game. Check out the flash widjet for a bunch of free insanity HERE
Including the OD&D/Carcosa mashup rules
The Carcosan Grimoire - Cameron DuBeers, 2009
The Carcosan Grimoire is a set of free resources for the role-playing supplement Carcosa by Geoffrey McKinney.
HERE
There have been a ton of ideas stolen from this Star Wars forum right
HERE
The Home of the Lost Star Warriors has fantastic range of material from the Marvel Star Wars Comics including NPC's,Star Ships, equipment, etc. Most of it however is for West End Games Star Wars Rpg but with a bit of tinkering it's easily adaptable.
Right over
HERE
Many of the maps and plans are free available on the internet for Star Destroyers but the best source that I've found is
HERE
Wookiepedia does a tremendous job of keeping it's resources straight.

This is in no way a challenge to the trademarks or copyrights of Stars Wars, Marvel or any of their products, films, etc. This is simply a personal rpg campaign is meant to entertain and inform under the fair trade and use terms. All properties listed here are the work of their authors.

Marvel Star Wars/Carcosa Rpg Mash Up Using The OD&D rules - Actual Play Game Session Part II

Tonight's game with got my PC's right into the middle of the action with ghuls being flung around like rag dolls from telekinetic blasts being let go by the Jedi knights. The PC's finally made it to the armory and got a hold of their light sabers. The party in tonight's game separated into two groups and began the task of making their way to the secondary computer center aboard the destroy. The other group decided to make their way to the main hanger.

I had ten players for tonight and the PC's were almost overwhelmed a few times as ghuls slither out from under support structures, from behind doors, and seemed to be everywhere!
The  ship's systems were failing quickly and after a quick break into the destroyers computer and sensor suite's it was determined that the ship was headed for an asteroid just outside of the Carcosa system!

A check into the destroyers bays revealed that there were a number of Imperial Shuttles available but it was also the area with the greatest ghul infestation. Then one of the Jedi made a critical error botching his dice roll and sub combed to the caress of  the ghul horde.
Ravis Chor was devoured at seven pm this evening! Now only nine jedi remained and they were determined to find out what was powering the ghuls. The PC's noticed that each time a ghul was cut down it was regenerating like a troll.
Meanwhile key systems  were failing fast including life support and heat in certain sections of the ship!

The subsidiary reactor was hemorrhaging fuel and several of the ghuls melted from the radioactivity pouring out of that section when a bulk head door solved the problem.
Two of the jedi managed to break into the star destroyer commander's office as this was going on. They were able to determine that the star destroyer was transporting a bone man sorcerer that was the head of a cult of Hastur in the middle of the Dantoinne system. Among his belongings were items from some unknown primitive society and others that were far more sophisticated then anything that Imperial Empire was capable of creating at this time.
Further records indicated that the man had been executed just four days before coming on board, There were objects that they had taken from the fool of a sorcerer and he was executed in the morning before the arrival of the PC's. A curse had been leveled on the ship by the sorcerer and suddenly the crew of the star destroyer had become violently ill.
The disease spread like wild fire among the crew. There were certainly video records showing the speed of the outbreak. Certain key officials from the ship escaped the worst of the carnage.
The destroyer was lurching this way and that. The PCs got the idea that their time was limited and that's when they found the 'eagle'.
A statue of an alien bird surfaced in a search of the commander's cabin. The thing was  of Cacosian manufacture. An odd metal statue or fetish from some backwards tribe. The problem was that the PC failed his saving throw and became infected with ghul plague! The player was more then a bit panic struck by this. And he also found the activation codes for the Imperial shuttles. But now he had to find a cure and fast! His skin was beginning to drop off in bits and pieces.

The other PC's were going down to engineering to try and fly the star destroyer and that's when they ran smack into the bone man sorcerer who was still aboard the ship!

To be continued this week!

Marvel Star Wars/Carcosa Rpg Mash Up Using The OD&D rules - Actual Play Game Session

I got a call on Sunday afternoon from my friend Peter and he wanted to know if I was available for a little old school action. They wanted something different.
Some friends of ours were visiting with him and the rest of our players. So I ended up with nine players . Allen and Nancy Scotte were old friends. Players of mine from way back but we drifted apart. Jobs, kids, new state, and more of the usual real life yaddah, yaddah.
But now I had to come up with a convention set style adventure.

Sunday was one of those days where I go into the old comic book stacks.  I was going through my comic collection including some of my old Marvel's Star Wars Comics and near by was my copy of Carcosa!
That was it!

There's something to be said for Marvel's Star Wars comics which were the fodder for many a West End Games session.
And now they were going to be fodder for tonight's descent into Hell  game.
There's something about Marvel Star War comics. Maybe it was the fact that they were always a constant between the Empire Strikes Back And the Return of the Jedi movies.

They've obviously been turned to Bantha fodder because the Expanded Universe was canceled. Whatever that means.
For those of us using them as material for old school games?
Not much at all.

With a bit of slight of hand the plot went something like this:
The PC's were prisoners on a crippled ultra black list Star Destroyer. This was a prison ship on it's way back to Tartan Base. A facility for the disposal of all rebel scum and undesirable elements to the Empire and the New Order.  On board were a group of renegade Jedi Knights only recently found. These survivors were on their way to be questioned, processed, and executed.

Express Elevator to Hell
Smoke, fire, warning lights, and flames as well as the occasional explosion is what you awaken to!
It gets worse because it always get's worse.

Something's wrong! Warning lights flashing, escape pods have been jettisoned and the PC's are aboard a crashing ship.

Did I forget to mention the ghuls aboard the vessel? The hungry flesh eating ghuls who are craving humanoid flesh?
There were forty of the bastards  that were on the PC's case. Using improvised weapons, a bit of  luck (using one of the other PC's as bate) and a bottle neck passage the PC's forced the things to battle them one at a time. The rest of the PC's managed to locate their light sabers in the armory.
Oh did I happen to mention that the Star Destoyer is crashing?

Next Stop Carcosa (maybe).
