OSR Sword & Sorcery Commentary On '&' Publication's 'the Book of Miscellaneous Spells Volume 2' A Free OSR Resource For AD&D 1st edition & Your Old School Campaigns

"The & Publishing Group is pleased to announce the publication of Andrew Hamilton's second collection of Old School Gaming spells -- A Book of Miscellaneous Spells Volume 2! This book of spells is designed for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD& D) and OSRIC but is compatible with most Old School Dungeons & Dragons (D& D) games and their retro-clones."

Its been ages since I've checked over the '&' site & it's been an age since the Book of Miscellaneous Spells Volume 2 was in my downloads on my laptop. But there's reason for this and it includes the fact that there's a whole section on Cult of Juiblex Clerical Spells & these are going to be playing a major roll for the villain's cult in an upcoming Castles & Crusades  campaign. This is going to be a Sword & Sorcery campaign & the Demon Lord Juiblex plays a major role. While the demon lord isn't known under that name in C&C.
There's also  frost giant shaman's spells as well which fits right in with the 'Sword & Sorcery' themes of the campaign outline. These spells are very different by comparison too the Castles & Crusades  Adventurers Spellbook. And  the Book of Miscellaneous Spells Volume 2 slots more deeply into the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons first edition ideals and catalog of spells
. And the appendix of the spells within the  the Book of Miscellaneous Spells Volume 2  fits the Chaotic monster races then the shamans of human &  humanoid magic user. The other item that will fit the Sword & Sorcery themes are the Mythos bundle for C&C.

This being said the PC spells from the Book of Miscellaneous Spells Volume 2 are different enough to offer far more variety to offer the players more of a variety. The spells have some really solidly done ideas for PC & NPC adventurers  within game campaigns.  The Chaos NPC military forces are going to have access to magick far more easily then the PC's. This goes into the fact that the forces of darkness are aligned with thier Chaotic  magickal sources.

OSR Commentary - Adventurer, Conqeuror, King's Forces of Chaos & Free ACK's Downloads

So over the past couple of days we've been looking into Adventurer,Conqueror, King rpg's download's page we came across Monster's Demons & Beastmen downloads. Why are these important?! Because they bring D&D traditional demon types into ACK's. Within ACK's the beastmen forces are literally the face of Chaos!

In the past we've used beastmen as the obvious 'monster forces' for a wide
variety of ACK's campaigns & mini campaigns.
Axioms Issue 2: Savage Swords of Chaos brings home the beastmen forces &  Monster's Demons & Beastmen downloads compliments this issue like no other. Why because of the fact that the forces of Chaos in ACK's are so tied into the overaching campaign setting of the game. Yes there's lots of freedom for DM's to create their own worlds & campaign setting. The game is but the official ACK's world of Auran rife with possibilities for mayhem & depravity as Chaos takes over! However where these downloads shine is actually ACK's Future which has among other things the Martians including Green Thark warriors & giant space hamsters. These downloads line up very nicely with Barbarian Conquerors of Kanahu.

ACK's Future might be perfect for a colony of Kanahu as one of the planet's unknown moons. And possibly as another adventuring location. We've used this style of tactic in the past with Venger Satanis's Cha'alt & it might be time to return to it as mini ACK's campaign location.

Do yourselves a favor as well if your going to get Cha'alt get the books directly from Venger himself. Amazon has them for one hundred US plus shipping. Venger will be much less within the continenal United States. Just contact him here.

Review & Commentary On Warren Presents 007 Alien Invasions Comix 1979 For Your Old School 2d6 Science Fiction Rpg Campaigns

Tooling around the internet archive last night I came across Warren Presents 007 Alien Invasions Comix 1979 as a possible resource for the Hostile rpg from Zozer Games. And its been an interesting read to say the least. If anything I'd say that 007 Alien Invasions Comix 1979 presents an alternative  hybrid world of Cepheus Engine & Hostile as we'll see. And Warren has that classic Eighties horror comic book feel that harkens back to E.C. comics.

'The Beast Yet To Come' NICOLA CULTL /ART: CARMINE INFANTINO AND ALEX NINO is a straight up 'alien turns human to humanoids ' with a planetary admisinistor and his son given over to forces beyond their control. This story presents a typical cliff hanger ending which might be where the PC's enter to investigate the goings on here. And the PC's would have to be very careful as to their own interaction with the alien forces at work here.
'It' by Archie Goodwin & with artwork by Dan Adkins is a direct homage to Ray Harryhausen's  the 1957 classic, 20 Million Miles to Earth with Ymir like aliens and their tale of total destruction. The PC's might be able to head this fate off or deal with the aftermath on Earth in true Dark Horse alien fashion.
'Mound' by Tom Sutton is pure Earth meteor 1950's Atomic Sci Fi E.C. style horror with the twist revelation at the end. The PC's might be called into deal with the aftermath of the twist & mop up the end alien weirdness.
And then we jump into the ads followed by a great little 'Alien' article by Forrest J. Ackerman & yes, the 'Famous Monsters of Filmland ' classic movie monster father.
We then jump into ads that make my heart ache with nostolgia.

More Free Sword and Science Fantasy Fiction - 'The Tree of Life ' by C. L. Moore From October 1936 issue of Weird Tales magazine

"A gripping tale of the planet Mars and the terrible monstrosity that called its victims to it from afar -- a tale of interplanetary space hero Northwest Smith."
Grab it right here.

Most of you might be thinking that this blog entry is going to be where we dive deep into C.L. Moore's Northwest Smith  Mars.   If we look at 'The Tree of Life ' by C. L. Moore more closely there's a lot going on below the surface.
The actual danger comes to PC's who don't understand that the Lovecraftian Martian plant described in the story is actually a part of a much greater danger on Mars & elswhere. The plant life described in the story is similar to plant deities of Mars decribed by both Leigh Brackett & Clark Aston Smith. For CAS it was his story, 'The Dweller in the Gulf' is one where one of the ancient gods of Mars shows the upstart humans that not everything is gone on Mars. This entity might be similar to the occult cosmic entity found in Seedling of Mars and Vulthoom .  And as Boyd Pearson says in his article on Eldritch Darkness 'Cycles of Clark Ashton Smith'; "While The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis and The Dweller in the Gulf would of been equally effective stories had they been set on earth Seedling of Mars and Vulthoom utilised the 'alien invasion' motif popular in the pulps at the time However, theses did not contain your typical alien invasion scenarios Vulthoom was an alien 'god' (plant like) who came to mars when humans "were still the blood-brothers of the ape," and now wishes to move to Earth Vulthoom's plot is only temporarily foiled by being put back to sleep for a thousand years The plant thing in Seedling of Mars has better luck in that it does get to take over the earth"

Seedling of Mars or The Planet Entity [plot by - E M Johnson] (1931)[An alternative background to the proceeding 4 stories]

So what does any of this have to do with 'The Tree of Life ' by C. L. Moore? Everything there are very dangerous occult forces on Mars. Divine forces that work in various cycles of life & death just as some Earth life forms do according to the weather. And this plant entity encountered by Northwest Smith might simply be an extension of the former pantheon of Mars. And in point of fact these alien entities might be tied to Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoomian plantmen. And in point in of fact these plantmen could be extensions of the Lovecraftian plant gods on Mars.
But these types of entities are not just found on Mars. There are a literal ton of these plant monsters scattered throughout the Pulps. So it would be quite easy to add these monsters to your favorite OSR games!
These plant gods & alien entities are the great survivors & are able to survive just about any disaster that might befall Mars and this includes a small nuclear war.

The plantmen below is from Michael Whalen's Barsoom covers & used without permission.

Review & Commentary On Cepheus Journal issue #4 for Free Download & Support of the Cepheus Engine Rpg among other Cepheus Engine Powered Rpg's

So its on again & this time we're  coming to the table top fully armed. The latest issue of Cepheus Journel issue #4 is out!  And it brings to the table top some welcome additions in the form of Ship Damage by Nick Lucock article, a nice take on the furthering of the Cepheus Engine's damage consquences for your space craft. Ewan Spence takes on a lovely little tour of The PLA Armored Squad for Celpheus Modern. Its a well crafted article & does a deep dive in all of the right places making it a very nicely little take on one of the most dangerous armies in the modern world. Then Nick Lucock takes into a deep dive through the Altair Subsector. Its a solid article that takes a hard & fast look into a very nicely done potential campaign location. Then we get a good take on Dr.Syn & The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh by Paul Drye an old favorite of my wife. Again good marks on this article which takes a solid look at the novel & legends that inspired it. 40 Eridani in 2021 by Randy McDonald is a look at a double star system & its uses for the Cepheus Engine rpg with some really well done twists & turns.

The Archbishop's Gambit is by PO Bergstedt for either Sword of Cepheus or the forth coming Cepheus Störtebeker rules. Its pretty solid for Sword of Cepheus & as an adventure its got a really nice couple of twists & turns to it. This is followed by 'Escape From Qasim's Teeth' by Neil Lucock an adventure for Godstar & again this is an adventure that I wasn't expecting to go the way it does. There's some room here for campaign expansion if the DM wants to take it in that direction. Solid but very interesting. 'Gram Baley's Helzer's Recovery Salvage & Repossession Service' part II  isn't only a mouth full but has some really good instellar adventure potential. Get the first part of this in Cepheus Journal issue #3 right here.

So let's talk about what makes this issue a solid free download besides all of the above. The layout is good, the cartography is well done, the whole package is very nicely put together & very useful for a Cepheus Engine DM to go to town with.

Cepheus Journal issue #4 for Free Download is available right here.

The Forgotten Jules Verne Novel - Off on A Comet

"Gallia, that touches the Earth in its flight and collects a few small chunks of it. The disaster occurs on January 1 of the year 188x in the area around Gibraltar. On the territory that is carried away by the comet there remain a total of thirty-six people of French, English, Spanish and Russian nationality. These people do not realize at first what has happened, and consider the collision an earthquake."

Today its Jules Verne's birthday & once again its a harried day of sewing machine repair & work. Scrambling to get everything done & yet its one of those days were we're thinking about Appendix 'S' inspiration & in this case Jules Verne's 'Off on a Comet' which appeared in Amazing Stories Volume 01 Number 01 (April 1926).

Now right off let's address the  anti Semitic content of the book version of  Jules Verne's 'Off on a Comet'  instead this is the magazine English translation which doesn't contain any of that content. Any of the American or English traslations don't contain any of that material according to the wiki entry; "From the beginning Verne had problems with this novel.[10] Originally he intended that Gallia would crash into the earth, killing all on board. This may have been the motivation for naming the hero "Servadac" with the mirror of the French word cadavres ("corpses"), predicting all would die on the "return". His publisher Hetzel would not accept this however, given the large juvenile readership in his monthly magazine, and Verne was forced to graft a rather unsatisfying ending onto the story, allowing the inhabitants of Gallia to escape the crash in a balloon.

The first appearance in French was in the serial magazine Magasin d'éducation et de récréation [fr], commencing on 1 January 1877 and ending on 15 December 1877. It was in June 1877 when chapter 18 appeared with the introduction and description of Isac Hakhabut:

He was a man of fifty years, who looked sixty. Small, weakly, with eyes bright and false, a " busked nose, a yellowish beard and unkempt hair, large feet, hands long and hooked, he offered the well-known type of the German Jew, recognizable among all. This was the usurer with supple back-bone, flat-hearted, a clipper of coins and a skin-flint. Silver should attract such a being as the magnet attracts iron, and if this Shylock was allowed to pay himself from his debtor, he would certainly sell the flesh at retail. Besides, although a Jew originally, he made himself a Mahometan in Mahometan provinces, when his profit demanded it, and he would have been a pagan to gain more.

This prompted the chief rabbi of Paris, Zadoc Kahn, to write a letter to Hetzel, objecting that this material had no place in a magazine for young people. Hetzel and Verne co-signed a reply indicating they had no intention of offending anyone, and promising to make corrections in the next edition. However Verne left the salvage work to Hetzel, asking Hetzel at the end of the summer, "Have you arranged the affair of the Jews in Servadac?" The principal change was to replace "Jew" with "Isac" throughout, and to add "Christian countries" to those where Hakhabut plied his trade. The anti-semitic tone remained however, sales were lower than for other Verne books, and the American reprint houses saw little profit with only a single printing by George Munro in a newspaper format. Even the Hetzel revised version has never been translated into English, as both Victorian translations were made from the magazine version. This has caused some modern reviewers to unfairly criticize the early translators, assuming that they had inserted the anti-semitic material which Verne actually wrote."

The second part of the novel 'Off on a Comet' appeared in Amazing Stories Volume 01 Number 02 (May 1926).  And its a very sharp & telling satire of pre WWI affairs & politics in Europe during the time of Verne as much as its an adventure science fantasy novel.

The plot is pure Jules Verne straight outta of the gate here according to the 'Off On A Comet' wiki entry which has a pretty solid break down; "The story starts with a comet called Gallia, that touches the Earth in its flight and collects a few small chunks of it. The disaster occurs on January 1 of the year 188x in the area around Gibraltar. On the territory that is carried away by the comet there remain a total of thirty-six people of French, English, Spanish and Russian nationality. These people do not realize at first what has happened, and consider the collision an earthquake.

They first notice weight loss: Captain Servadac's adjutant Ben Zoof, to his amazement, jumps twelve meters high. Zoof with Servadac also soon notice that the alternation of day and night is shortened to six hours, that east and west have changed sides, and that water begins to boil at 66 degrees Celsius, from which they rightly deduce that the atmosphere became thinner and pressure dropped. At the beginning of their stay in Gallia they notice the Earth with the Moon, but think it is an unknown planet. Other important information is obtained through their research expedition with a ship, which the comet also took.

During the voyage they discover a mountain chain blocking the sea, which they initially consider to be the Mediterranean Sea and then they find the island of Formentera (before the catastrophe a part of the Balearic Islands), where they find French astronomer Palmyrin Rosette, who helps them to solve all the mysterious phenomena. They are all on a comet which Rosette discovered by a year ago and predicted to be on a collision course with Earth, but no one believed the astronomer, because a layer of thick fog at the time prevented astronomical observations in other places.

A new research expedition determines the circumference of Gallia to be 2320 km. The mass of the comet is calculated by Rosette. He determines it at 209,346 billion tonnes. For the calculation he uses spring scales and forty 5-franc silver coins, the weight of which on earth equaled exactly one kilogram. However, the owner of the scales, Isaac Hakkabut, has rigged the instrument, so the results have to be cut by a quarter.

The involuntary travelers through the Solar system do not have any hope for long-term colonization of their new world, because it is lacking arable land. They feed themselves mainly with the animals that were left on the chunk carried away by Gallia. One strange phenomenon they meet is that the sea on the comet does not freeze, even though the temperature drops below the freezing point (believed to be due to the theory that a stagnant water surface resists freezing longer than when rippled by wind). Once a stone is thrown into the sea, the sea freezes in a few moments. The ice is completely smooth and allows skating and sleigh sailing.

Despite the dire situation in which the castaways find themselves, old power disputes from Earth continue on Gallia, because the French and English officers consider themselves the representatives of their respective governments. The object of their interest is for example previously Spanish Ceuta, which has become an island on the comet and which both parties start to consider an unclaimed territory. Captain Servadac therefore attempts to occupy Ceuta, without success. It turns out that the island has been occupied by Englishmen, who maintain a connection to their base at Gibraltar through an optical telegraph.

Gallia gets to an extreme point of its orbit and begins its return to Earth. In early November Rossete's refined calculations show that there will be a new collision with the Earth, exactly two years after the first, again on January 1. Therefore, the idea is conceived of leaving the comet at collision time in a balloon. The proposal is approved and the castaways make a balloon out of the sails of their ship. In mid-December there is an earthquake, in which Gallia partially falls apart and loses a fragment, which probably kills all Englishmen in Ceuta and Gibraltar. When on January 1 there is again a contact between the atmospheres of Gallia and Earth, the space castaways leave in the balloon and land safely two kilometers from Mostaganem in Algeria."

'Off On A Comet' Uses For The OSR

There is a ton for the dungeon master whose looking to put a group of unlikely characters together into a desparate situation. 'Off on a Comet' is an excellent example of a quickly put together Con game adventure or mini campaign. This makes it an excellent choice for both Swords & Wizardry or White Star. Perhaps both. The comet might also be an artifical vault put together by a past ancestor of  humanity for the eventual breakdown of humanity & society.
There's also the Lovecraftian idea that the comet isn't really comet at all but an artificial space craft  that has become unstuck on its mission.
Option number two use the 'Off on a Comet' novel as a spring board for your imagination & use Swords & Wizardry, or Labyrinth Lord, & Mutant Future as a sorta of mini fantasy setting with perhaps hidden dungeons below the comet's surface. It worked for Hollywood &  it can work for you too.

Free OSR PC Resources With First Edition Character Classes By Leonaru For First Edition AD&D, OSRIC Or Your Favorite Retroclone

A couple of years ago I needed a first edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Samurai character class for a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese-language film Seven Samurai as an OSRIC one shot adventure. Now I've been a fan of the class since the original NPC class appeared in the pages of  Dragon magazine as a sub-class of the fighter in Dragon #3 (October 1976). Fortunately I was able to not only find that the class had been done for me for zero edition, AD&D 1st edition but second edition as well. It was also done very well and for free. The pdf comes with everything including the samurai's weapons, armor, and equipment.

You Can Grab All of PC Classes of Leonaru
right over here!

Leonaru also did a reworked Monk class, scout, barbarian, knight
& even alchemist for second edition
& even a duelist class for those Romance era types who want a sword swinger from Old Europe.  The classes are well balanced & can be used creatively to fill in a number of holes in a campaign for even NPC classes where necessary. Finally there's the Samaurai's old friend the ninja in zero edition flavor warning the Ninja class is over powered compared to some of the other styles of classes available & the class is done in a very cinematic style. The pdf of the ninja contains everything from equipment, tools, weapons, tactics, and more.

Finally Leonaru did the Full Metal Plate retroclone which has a few twists & turns on the world's most popular fantasy role playing game. You can check it out for free here  or you can buy a copy right over here.
Now these character classes can be added quite easily into the wastelands of your favorite post apocalyptic old school campaign for some extra cheesy weirdness or these classes could be used to represent some twisted version of Old Earth culture. These classes can easily be added into your favorite old school campaign for a twist on the usual PC classes that one finds in the various editions of  Dungeons & Dragons. Many of these classes are perfect for representing memorable NPC's. Anyway you slice it these are another welcome addition in the old school DM's arsenal of tricks to present to players.
He even did a decent Lovecrafian monster book
with some of the usual Lovecraft alien races.

The Free OSR Adventure Resource - Tales from the Laughing Dragon: A Dragonclaw Adventure As Adventure Fodder For Your Old School Science Fiction Campaign

So with OD&D being the basis for several games out there surely there isn't a free low level adventure that could be used introduce your old school space scum to some back water planet?  Well there actually is a very well done one for the Basic Fantasy Rpg and its free.

A desperate bit to save a kingdom upon a remote colony world in a backwater providence as the forces of evil threaten the planet. Only a brand of brave outer world adventurers can save us all. Are you those brave souls? Sound like the latest in the Star Wars saga or Battle Star Galactica? Or perhaps an old pulp sci fi novel? Nope. Instead its simply an old twist and trick that any DM has done in the past. Take an existing fantasy adventure and add in your favorite science fantasy crew. In this case the easily ported, DC1 Tales From The Laughing Dragon. There are several reasons why this works, one this is a low level series of adventures and have the same feel as a space opera, the events place the PC's into the deep end of Dragon Claw system errm barony. And their  presented as three sequential adventures set in the back end of the campaign enabling the DM to fill in the science fantasy issues as needed.

Grab It For Free Right Over

The humanoid races become alien races, there are number of giant monsters that don't need to be explained this after all an alien planet. Add in a star port near the town of Dale minimal facilities and well your pretty much ready to go.  The ruins stay as is and simply need to be fleshed out with a few more exotic failed colony bits and your pretty much ready to go.

The goblins and orc forces are a very easy fit for this adventure and can easily be ported over with little to no problems. Everything in the adventure can easily be ported over to a slightly better then average primitive backwater planet. All three of these adventures start in a cantina ermm bar. Yet these are not hack & slash adventures some thinking is required on the part of the adventurers. Hence why your psychic warriors and space knight types might be required. Sure there's plenty of action but some serious thought is going to have to be put in.

Add in some space teddy bear rangers, and your ready to go! But don't forget the giant spiders as well. There's a secondary & possibly much better OSR option in the form of Jason Vey's Free OD&D Star Wars Supplement. Here's where the rubber hits the X wings! All of usual Star Wars suspects are here & its cross compatible with everything already within this blog post!

With the Mandolorian hitting hard on the nostalgia buttons its not hard to see where & when this style of high space adventure could hit an OSR campaign note! All of this campaign formula is completely compatible with Warriors of the Red Planet or
Dungeons & Dragons Warriors of Mars
Warriors of the Red Planet [BUNDLE] - Night Owl Workshop ...

Boil all of this in hot simmering pot of White Star & your ready to go with only players needed to be added into the kitchen soup of a mix. Giving the DM a complete run of everything they need for OSR interstellar adventure!

Past Incarnations, Free Classic Adventure Fiction Downloads, Domain Management, & Old School Campaigns

I was speaking with an old friend of mine last night about Appendix N from the first edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master's Guide. What came up in conversation was the fact that there have always been connections within shared universes & heroes of fiction's incarnations. The first name that popped up was Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champions books. But the challenge was in using some less traditional sources for campaign building.

But actually the idea goes back much further and crosses into the Lost Worlds genre in several places. One of my favorites is the  prehistoric adventures of James Allison's pre-incarnations in the Aesir stories of Robert E.Howard. Here the protagonist James Allison is a crippled shell of a man dying in the heat of the Texas day who can remember all of his past incarnations including Niord who leads his stout warriors across the face of the world until they come upon a nation of Picts and then things get really bloody. Swords swing bodies fly and then reason takes over one of the Pictish tribesmen is spared & our hero's tribe settles into a former valley of the Cataclysm. The two tribes intermarry things settle down, time moves on, and eventually a splinter group goes out into the world to settle into another ruined jungle valley. This is the set up for the rest of the story as Niord goes out and faces not one monster but in fact four the last one being the Lovecraftian horror of the Worm. This thing is something out of a Lovecraftian nightmare, another of Howard's Mythos hold overs hiding out in a hidden valley. The worm leaves quite the impression though as a thing born from the imagination of Howard via his own take on his mythos.
"... a night-born demoniac intelligence such as men in dreams vaguely sense throbbing titanically in the black gulfs outside our material universe."

Down Load The James Allison Collection
By Robert E. Howard HERE

There are a lot of things to mine from the story. The second James Allison story in the public domain is Garden of Fear, it touches on many of the same themes as Valley of the Worm. But many Howard fans don't consider it in the league of Valley but it touches on another incarnation of James Allison & has a few trappings that can be mined for old school gaming. According to Wiki; The Garden of Fear and Other Stories is an anthology of fantasy and science fiction stories anonymously edited by William L. Crawford. It was published as A Crawford Publication in 1949 in an edition of 48,000 copies. The H. P. Lovecraft story first appeared in the magazine The Rainbow. The other stories originally appeared in the magazine Marvel Tales."
Howard has many of his central concepts on show in these stories such as the migrations of his Hyborian tribes and races, hidden gems of lost world valleys filled with steaming jungles & mysterious god like survivors of his Cataclysm. Many of these tales of Howard have entire eons, city states, heroes, and eons separated by cycles of death and rebirth with only ancestral blood ties binding our heroes together. Or so it would seem but in Kings of the Night by Robert Howard we have Bran Mak Morn conjuring up the spirit of King Kull to do battle with the Romans! Some of the  themes of racial superiority don't go over well today, they can be taken in stride as part of that era's outlook. They are are relics of their time and deserve to be left there but that doesn't take away from the fact that these stories kick ass and are still a fun read even today.
The second offering today is "The Eternal Lover" (The Eternal Lover Part 1) All-Story Weekly, March 7, 1914 which is an Edgar Rice Burroughs novella that appeared in All- Story Weekly and could be considered one of Burroughs shared universe Lost World/ Custer novels. The Custer novels are interesting because events of the Mad King happen between the events of 'The Eternal Lovers" or that is to say;"While the four Custer sibling novellas were first published in an alternating fashion; chronologically-speaking, the events of the two halves of The Eternal Lover/Savage occur between the two halves of The Mad King" Barney Custer is cast into the role of the king of Lutha set against the backdrop of WWI and the Eternal Lover comes right into the middle of the events of the novel.

You Can Download The Mad King HERE
The Eternal Savage concerns,"Barney's sister Victoria Custer. These stories take place between Barney's two Luthan adventures, when he and his sister are the guests of Tarzan on the latter's African estate. When cave man Nu is released from suspended animation, Virginia discovers that she is the reincarnation of his great love Nat-ul. The story covers her adventures with Nu."

You Can Down load The Eternal Savage From Gutenberg Australia as All four novellas—as they were serialized in All-Story Weekly—are in the public domain in the United States but check your home country for details before downloading.

Nu is no one to screw with as a cliff dweller from 100,000 years ago whose kept up his hunt with Oo a sabertooth tiger of deadly aspect. There's all sorts of other worldly weirdness about the Eternal Savage but the bottom line here is that time as it stands in the ERB universe is flexible and the action in the Eternal Savage is fast paced with lots of prehistoric hi jinks to keep the reader interested. There's also a ton of ideas here to mine the least of which being to take PC's out of their context and place them as their needed in an adventure.

So what does this have to do with OSR gaming? Quite a bit actually, one of the topics that came up in conversation were the links between sword & sorcery & Ruritanian romance. The
Ruritanian romance is defined as follows;"
Ruritanian romance is a genre of literature, film and theatre comprising novels, stories, plays and films set in a fictional country, usually in Central or Eastern Europe, such as the "Ruritania" that gave the genre its name.[1] Such stories are typically swashbuckling adventure novels, tales of high romance and intrigue, centered on the ruling classes, almost always aristocracy and royalty,[1] although (for instance) Winston Churchill's novel Savrola, in every other way a typical example of the genre, concerns a revolution to restore rightful parliamentary government in the republican country of Laurania. The themes of honor, loyalty and love predominate, and the works frequently feature the restoration of legitimate government after a period of usurpation or dictatorship."
One thing that I've noticed with Ruritanian romance sword & sorcery cross over games is that domain management is key for the end campaign game. This means that DM's have to be ready for domain mangement when one of their PC's seats their behinds on the throne.
For domain management in such Ruritanian romance sword & sorcery cross over games I'd use either Dark Albion The Rose War or Adventurer, Conqueror, King, or both since these systems actually play very well together.
I was recently involved in an OSR game with my buddy Steve where we were all playing AS&SH Hyperborean castaways facing down the terrors of Basic Fantasy's Monkey Island while the real villains of the lost world adventure were actually Dark Albion royals hell bent on claiming the island for their king. We were helping the liege of the island to be restored to her rightful throne. The Dark Albion royals had guns and there were other time lost castaways on the island who were incarnations or parodies of famous sword & sorcery figures. While it was a fun game there were implications that the royalty of the island was not what she appeared to be.  There was also an indication that we the party might actually be incarnations of WWI soldiers ourselves lost to time and space.

There were subtle & evil magicks involved as our party came across several items that the players recognized as WWI era items scattered about in the queen's chambers but it was a book of real world black magick that sealed the deal for the players. The game however has yet to be resolved but what it showed me was that potential for mixing and matching classic old school fiction and OSR material.  All of this ties in with my Atlantandria Port City of Accursed Atlantis as the PC's have unfinished business with some wily Dark Albion merchants there.
