OSR Commentary & Review The Book of Valkyries, published by Night Owl Workshop For Old School Campaign

The Book of Valkyries, published by Night Owl Workshop (authored and illustrated by Thomas Denmark), is a 108-page supplement designed for the Original Fantasy RPG and compatible with a wide range of OSR systems.

Released in late March 2026, it serves as a companion to Denmark’s previous work, Norse Beasties, providing deep lore and mechanical integration for the demigoddesses of the Norse sagas.

Key Features

  • 43 Unique Valkyries: The book details 43 individual shieldmaidens of Asgard, moving beyond generic stat blocks to provide specific descriptions and roles based on mythological research.

  • NPC Class: It includes a specialized Valkyrie non-player character class, allowing GMs to use these figures as more than just monsters. They are framed as divine emissaries, guides for heroes, or "choosers of the slain."

  • Hand-Drawn Art: Staying true to the publisher's aesthetic, the book is lavishly illustrated with hand-drawn art by Thomas Denmark, created without the use of AI.

  • Compatibility: While designed for "Classic D&D/AD&D" styles, it is explicitly noted as compatible with:

    • Old-School Essentials (OSE)

    • Labyrinth Lord

    • Swords & Wizardry

    • Adventurer Conqueror King System (ACKS)

    • Colonial Troopers / Guardians / Warriors of the Red Planet

Campaign Integration

The supplement is designed to be "plug-and-play." While it leans heavily into Norse Mythology, the entries are written to function as high-power divine agents in any epic fantasy setting. They can serve as powerful patrons for high-level characters or as existential threats on the battlefield for those who would defy the gods' will.

The Book of Valkyries, brings a touch of the divine into the focus of an OSR campaign setting. And does so with easy to use clarity and divine inspiration for adventurers with a Norse focus. The supplement is well written and has some incredible artwork. The Book of Valkyries is actually incredibly useful if the DM wants to use these divine messengers as the go between for Norse clerics and their gods.
For a game such as Adventurer, Conqueror, King 2nd this supplement brings a great set of divine NPC's for your campaigns. It's well written and these NPC's are well written and are perfect for tweaking or even destroying adventurers in equal measure. These are great NPC's for using adventure hooks to get the PCs involved with them.
For Castles & Crusades these NPC's are both nasty and highly motivated to get involved with adventurers. They have agendas and goals for those that they interact with. I highly recommend,
 'The Book of Valkyries'.

OSR Post Apocalyptic Commentary & Review Of Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny For Your Old School Campaigns

"Hell Tanner isn't the sort of guy you'd mistake for a hero: he's a fast-driving car thief, a smuggler, and a stone-cold killer. He's also expendable “ at least in the eyes of the Secretary of Traffic for the Nation of California. Tanner doesn't care much for those eyes. You'd also never mistake Hell Tanner for a humanitarian. Facing life in prison for his various crimes, he's given a choice; rot away his remaining years in a tiny jail cell, or drive cross-country and deliver a case of antiserum to the plague-ridden people of Boston, Massachusetts... if anyone is still alive there to receive it, that is."

Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny was published in 1969 & is an unapologetically post apocalyptic Science Fiction yarn. Damnation Alley isn't a great novel instead it's a throw back to Pulp magazine tradition. This novel goes hard because Hell Tanner is an exact copy or contemporary of Snake Plisken from John Carpenter's Escape From New York.

According to the Damnation Alley wiki entry;"Hell Tanner, an imprisoned Hells Angels  member, is offered a full pardon for his crimes in exchange for taking on a suicide mission: a precarious drive through Damnation Alley, a narrow passage relatively free of lethal radiation, across a ruined America from Orange County, California to Boston, as part of a convoy of three Landmaster vehicles (fitted with various rocket launchers, flame-throwers, machine guns, and slicing implements) attempting to deliver an urgently needed plague vaccine  to the survivors of Boston"

The world of Damnation Alley is a post apocalypse Hellscape & here's a break down according to the Wiki entry; "a post-apocalyptic Southern California, in a hellish world shattered by nuclear war thirty years before. Several police states have emerged in remaining areas of the former United States that can still support human life. As a result of the war, hurricane-force winds above 500  ft (150 m) prevent any sort of air travel from one state to the next. Sudden, violent, and unpredictable "garbage storms," and giant, mutated animals and insects make day-to-day life treacherous."

This novel has very little to do with the movie & according to a review; "Barry N. Malzberg found the book "an interesting novella converted to an unfortunate novel," faulting it as "a mechanical, simply transposed action-adventure story written, in my view, at the bottom of the man's talent."[1] Zelazny himself agreed with Malzberg, stating that he preferred the novella and only expanded it at his agent's request to make it more viable for a movie deal."  Umm don't let this take away from a great little post apocalyptic that tells it's story in a one hundred and fifty pages. If you wanna read the original "Damnation Alley" (novella) at the Internet Archive.

Damnation Alley could easily be used as OSR post apocalpytic inspiration with the PC's being called into service to take medicine from the nation of California to Boston. The DM can populate their own landscape with a wide variety of mutated encounters. Hell Tanner could easily be viewed as a proto type for a Wretched rpg Apocalypse game group of PC's. The PC's have to trek from West to East coast and they happen to be the worst of the worst criminals because only they can survive the Hellscape.

Forget radiation for a moment and let's talk weapons that are capable of mutating animals and humans into the monsters we see in Damnation Alley. For me it's easily got to be some sorta of Michael Moorcock inspired Chaos based weaponry. These weapons may crack the reality of Damnation Alley's Earth and allowed Chaos to pour into the landscape wrecking ecology, reality, and more. This Hellscape is what the PC's must journey across.
For the Wretchedverse these horrid weapons allowed the breaking the walls of reality allowing the Beyond to pour into this world and mutated every monster and animal it touched including the human race. This is a world on the edge of extinction to adventure within.

Free OSR PC Resources With First Edition Character Classes By Leonaru For First Edition AD&D, OSRIC Or Your Favorite Retroclone

A couple of years ago I needed a first edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Samurai character class for a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese-language film Seven Samurai as an OSRIC one shot adventure. Now I've been a fan of the class since the original NPC class appeared in the pages of  Dragon magazine as a sub-class of the fighter in Dragon #3 (October 1976). Fortunately I was able to not only find that the class had been done for me for zero edition, AD&D 1st edition but second edition as well. It was also done very well and for free. The pdf comes with everything including the samurai's weapons, armor, and equipment.

You Can Grab All of PC Classes of Leonaru
right over here!

Leonaru also did a reworked Monk class, scout, barbarianknight
& even alchemist for second edition
& even a duelist class for those Romance era types who want a sword swinger from Old Europe.  The classes are well balanced & can be used creatively to fill in a number of holes in a campaign for even NPC classes where necessary. Finally there's the Samaurai's old friend the ninja in zero edition flavor warning the Ninja class is over powered compared to some of the other styles of classes available & the class is done in a very cinematic style. The pdf of the ninja contains everything from equipment, tools, weapons, tactics, and more.

Finally Leonaru did the Full Metal Plate retroclone which has a few twists & turns on the world's most popular fantasy role playing game. You can check it out for free here  or you can buy a copy right over here.
Now these character classes can be added quite easily into the wastelands of your favorite post apocalyptic old school campaign for some extra cheesy weirdness or these classes could be used to represent some twisted version of Old Earth culture. These classes can easily be added into your favorite old school campaign for a twist on the usual PC classes that one finds in the various editions of  Dungeons & Dragons. Many of these classes are perfect for representing memorable NPC's. Anyway you slice it these are another welcome addition in the old school DM's arsenal of tricks to present to players.
He even did a decent Lovecrafian monster book
with some of the usual Lovecraft alien races.

Four Free OSR Monster Books For Your Old School Campaigns

Old School dungeon masters can't have enough monsters & sometimes you've got to dust off some old favorites to throw a scare or two into the players.  Last night I was pursuing through the Planet Algol blog & dusting off some old ideas for my inner Earth campaign. Keeping to the gonzo pulp aesthetic of the campaign has taken me down a short path of memory lane to a few years ago. The first thing I noticed were two monster books that had escaped my notice for a long while. The first one was Varlet's & Vermin from the Roles,Rules, and Rolls blog;"It's a collection of monsters and related ideas for challenge levels 1 and 2, written for Swords & Wizardry but easily adaptable to other systems." I had forgotten how good some of these fiends were. I also really like the Man of Wounds, and the rat variants are very nicely done.

GRAB IT RIGHT OVER HERE

The second monster book is Telecanter's Deadly Distractions from Telecanter's Receding Rules blog and these are perfect beasties to challenge as well as dismay your party of adventurers. These are low level creatures with a twist or two. They're very well done and quite weird fitting in a number of criteria that I've had.
Download Telecanter's Deadly Distractions
Finally there's The Basic Fantasy Field Guide of Creatures Malevolent and Benign which has a ton of monsters that are usable with a number of retroclones with minor adjustments. Did I mention that their free and you should also check out some of the other free downloads while your there on the Basic Fantasy website as well.

 Grab
The Basic Fantasy Field Guide of Creatures Malevolent and Benign Here
There are two free nearly forgotten tomes of monsters from Dragon's foot. org Monstrous Tome - Volume One which contains new dragons , demons, monsters and all original content for AD&D first edition.  Be careful with these monsters some of these creatures have the potential for an old school party wipe of adventurers. GRAB Monstrous Tome -
Volume One RIGHT HERE

Then there's the second volume of The Monstrous Tome which adds a whole other layer of weirdness & nastiness to the monsters in your dungeon. The second volume of the Monstrous Tome seems to focus on monsters of the planes, some deadly dungeon deviants, and more horrors to throw into old school campaigns.

GRAB THE

Monstrous Tome 2 - Book of Beings HERE

There's a good mix of old school style original creatures to populate your dungeons, megadungeons, and campaigns. Then of course there are the various creations of Ancient Vaults whose Senufio: Lords of Misrule
are going to get a workout as the heads of some of the heads of cults of Chaos that the party will be encountering.

Review of Crawling Under A Broken Moon fanzine issue #15 (DCC) From Shield of Faith Studios For The Dungeon Crawl Classics rpg System

So its been a long while since I've cracked open Dungeon Crawl Classics & Crawling Under A Broken Moon's twisted post apocalyptic weirdness. But Drivethrurpg & Rpgnow are having a massive sale where you can get issues for a dollar a pop & you can get issue #15 at a really good price. So why issue #15? Well because it contains the latter half of the half of the Dinotastic Park semi-hex crawl. Which is sort of a send up of the Jurrasic Park movies and Seventies rubber suited dinosaur films twisted through the DCC lens of Crawling Under A Broken Moon. Don't let the cover fool you this is a very tight and well done issue.

First of all you get a complete run down of a mercenary outfit called  the Red Claw Raiders mercenary
company based out of a small settlement a few miles northwest of the dome, called the
Free Trader’s Rest.
The Red Claws basically have the run of the dome in the later half of the ruins of the park; well sort of. Its more like they have interests with every other faction in the park & a semi controling interest. They'd like to acquire more influence, relics, leverage, etc. In other words for a party of adventurers they're perfect NPC exploit material for a party of adventurers. We also get more insight into the other dimensional locations, gateways and more that were eluded to in CUB issue #14.

"The party could travel from any other dimension or alternate game setting via a portal or gate that leads out into the dimensional rift in hex 162. Due to the chaotic nature of the rift, it will be impossible to return the way they came. A convenient ceiling collapse in the rift area will work as a good motivator for the adventurers
to move forward."

There are tons more background material, new factions, monsters, patrons, and more all closely linked with the Dinotastic park adventure campaign location. That's part of the deal here with this hex crawl everything ties right back into it.
You got the" The Robo-Faithful - Based out of their temple located in 152, these robotic folk worship the entity known as the Ultimospark. They want nothing more than to exist in peace and do the will of their god. While they see living beings as inferior they have no desire to force them to convert into superior roboforms
unless they truly wish to ascend to a greater existence. This gift of the Ultimospark they offer freely."  Then there is one of my favorites a mutated variation of the Grey aliens known as; The Bumpkinoids - The mutagenic compounds that caused the original human survivors to devolve into the Once-men have had similar, more rapid, effects upon all of the alien life forms that have entered into the park. Some came to
investigate the strange cosmic emanations and others crashed here due to the manations interfering with their flight controls."

"The Redclaw Raiders - These wasteland invaders have learned how to scavenge with enough success to make more profit than loss of life. They really only care about expanding their operation without angering any of the other factions enough to take up open hostility. Since they are profit driven, they are almost always willing to make a deal, even with enemies"
"The Once-men - On this side of the park, the Once-men are much more numerous and much better organized. They have actively been using guerilla style tactics to keep the Scale Empire’s foothold to a minimum. Led by their psionically talented leaders, known as Wise Eyes, they have fortified some of the western resort areas to give their people safety from both the Saurians and Dinosaurs."  There are tons of hex adventure locations and exploitable places for PC's to easily get in over their heads plus more details on the mutated dinosaurs and setting information.

Plus there are two different PC classes including the Robo Priest - "You are a messenger of the Ultimospark, an energy that bestows holy intelligence on the most pure of forms — machines. Flesh-bags may look in awe at your shiny metal form, but you are a mere conduit for the awesome power of the Ultimospark."
As well as the Cro-Mentalist - A neolithic psionicist of extraordinary lethality but balanced power perfect for adventuring PC who wants a balanced edge in their games.
One thing about this issue of Crawling Under A Broken Moon it takes full advantage of Mind Games from Shield of Faith Studios as a sort of modular add on. This isn't a bad thing at all because its also on sale from Drivethrurpg as a part of their Halloween sale.

What's really cool is the fact that you get a complete campaign setting in two small fanzine sized publications perfect for dropping into your own version of 'Merica. The setting works and its a nice quality piece of post apocalyptic slight of hand. I really enjoyed the encounters which give a really nice little world to adventure in. Because this a fanzine there's a good amount of quality here & I continue to be impressed with Shield of Faith Studios. So set your sights on Dinotastic Park & bring the kids down they'd love to have your adventurers for lunch or dinner!
Five out of five for the effort, professionalism, and well thought out ideas in this one.
Could this setting be used with other old school post apocalyptic retroclone systems? That's a question I've been pondering for quite a while and the answer I think is yes. With a bit of slight of hand and some other resources this material could easily be adapted into Mutant Future. There are enough pieces of that puzzle already on the OSR market that can make that happen. The funky dice stats are the worst thing but with some time and energy it could happen.
