Star Wars Tie Fighter Fan Short Film As Fodder For Your Old School Campaigns

If your a Star Wars fan and you haven't seen this really wonderful piece of animation then you don't know what your missing. Animator Paul Johnson has been working on an Empire inspired 80's anime style seven minute short that pulls on the traditions of shows like Robotech, and other anime classics for this wonderful little short.
According to what I found on the net - Animator Paul Johnson has labored the past four years in his spare time animating an anime-inspired “Star Wars” fan film entitled TIE Fighter that shows a space battle from the POV of the Empire, humanizing the Stormtrooper pilots and even making them heroes!

A shorter version of this short set to different music has existed on the web for several years, but this is the first time TIE Fighter has been shown in its seven-minute entirety.
Here’s what Johnson had to say about it: “Don’t support me on Patreon, because I don’t have one! And don’t donate to my Kickstarter, because I don’t have one of those either. Instead, if you enjoyed this, give someone at your workplace, uni, school or whatever a random bar of chocolate or can or Coke or something. Seriously, it’ll probably make their day. That would totally make my day.”
Original story right over HERE
This short takes the Empire's Imperial forces and humanizes them and comes complete with signature characters, implied back story, and more. Seriously this is a solid way of making me almost sympathize with the Empire. Notice I said almost though.  Even though this pulls from the same mental cloth as may of the 80's and 90's Japaneseanimation imports from a bygone era. There is something decidedly weird about rooting for the Empire and goes against the grain of the the Star Wars fan in me. That being said, this is a utterly brilliant little short and the animator deserves an award for his utterly brilliant fan film. Could this be used as the backdrop for a old school Star Wars rpg campaign? Absolutely it could be used as a rather brilliant back story for an old school rpg campaign or adventure. tie fighter

Many of the ships, equipment, etc. are all ships that have appeared in both the West End Star Wars books or the D20 material. The story and animation has enough meat to really pull some great ideas from the back drop and whip them around to produce a rather enduring long term campaign.

The animation is tight, the story brilliant, the characters interesting and this is something that I'd watch but there's something that pulls at my conscience. Its somehow wrong that I'm rooting for the Empire. All in all this is a rather great idea for a campaign and one that I'm sort of filing away for the future.

Free Old School Science Fiction Download - Starlog Presents: The Official Star Wars Technical Journal Vol.1,2,3, For Your Old School Sci fi Campaigns

I'm always quietly poking around the reference grounds of the internet and came across a very interesting little find for the Star Wars fans. Back in the 1990's West End Games D6 Star Wars Rpg was as hot as it gets in Rpg circles and the game still has a loyal fan base. Starlog did a set of 'official reference' books for the Star Wars films. There was  Starlog Presents: The Official The Star Wars Technical Journal, Vol. 1: The Planet Tatooine which came in very handy for the West End games campaigns. Not only did they have variations on 'official' materials but this enabled DM's to vary the content of their campaigns. Especially if they didn't have the extra twelve to twenty dollars for the West End material.

Now these technical manuals have come up for free download at the Internet Archive. Perfect material for the OSR DYI Star Wars OD&D campaigns. First up is the  Starlog Presents: The Official The Star Wars Technical Journal, Vol. 1: The Planet Tatooine
Available Right Over
Go to the right hand side and click Image Container PDF  for this one or do a direct download.

Starlog Presents: The Official Star Wars Technical Journal, Vol 3: The Rebel Forces
Available Right Over
HERE

Go to the right hand side and click to do a direct download.
This is one contains most of the Rebels equipment from the movies including star systems and lots of little details that come in handy for constructing adventures.

Starlog Presents: The Official Star Wars Technical Journal, Vol. 2: The Imperial Forces

This Journal contains most of the common Imperial screen seen forces. This isn't a bad little reference point for DM's to really get into the Star War's original movie Empire forces. This is a good download for doing skirmish style adventure encounters.

The Download options are on the right hand side of the screen and there a number of options for it.

Available Right Over

This is a nice piece of Imperial reference for a low impact, low scale Stars Wars Empire campaign.

Using The Starlog Presents: The Official Star Wars Technical Journal Vol.1,2,3, For Your Old School Sci fi Campaigns

Using the Starlog technical journals are perfect for doing a Marvel comic book Star Wars old school one shot. All of the common movie references are right in these. And since the majority of Star Wars fans out there are usually pretty fanatical, this means that reference books like these are perfect to throw in some variations for old school campaigns.

For doing Star Wars, OD&D is a perfect vehicle and there's a vary nice OD&D forum with some solid opinions and ideas right over HERE for doing just this sort of game. In fact the Sword +1 blog has a very nice entry with some nice OD&D style science fantasy adventure resources right over HERE. Are these free technical manuals from Star Log worth the download? In my humble opinion, they make a nice free option for reference and an interesting variation to add into an old school Star Wars campaign.

Review and Commentary On The 'Luke Star Killer' Source book For your Old School Space Opera

You can find it right over
HERE
Nineteen seventy seven was a banner year for me. Star Wars came out and I discovered Dungeons and Dragons or was it that OD&D discovered me?
Back in those bygone days I consumed everything Star Wars I could get my hands on and with my latest acquisitions the other day I began to look around the net and discovered that a series of articles that show cased some of the early works of George Lucas had been updated!

I printed out the ten page article  of 'The Luke Star Killer Source book'!
This isn't a game book instead its a look into one of the most interesting early drafts of the Stars Wars sage.
Here's an introduction and synopsis of the article by the author.
'This mini-sourcebook contains background material from the Second Draft of Star Wars, supplemented with selected material from the first draft, both of which were written by George Lucas. This sourcebook was written in preparation for my sequel to the Lucas script, “Princess of Ondos“.
This source book details the major characters, planets, and factions of this early version of Lucas’ Star Wars universe.
This information is based entirely on the work of George Lucas. –Brendon Wahlberg'

All your favorites are there but this is a very different universe. The source book reads like an odd mash up of Flash Gordon, bits of Dune, a dash of Errol Flynn, and some very weird Space Western elements thrown into a blender set to Samurai on high.
This isn't a bad thing at all.
There are a lot more Jedi in the movie, the places are familiar but the characters we know and love are set someplace else on the stage. Again this isn't a bad thing at all. This would make a hell of an old school rpg campaign as well as is! That's right the material is very much in the old school action/adventure space tradition if you can find players willing to deal with this one!
The author boils down into a very well thought out sourcebook all of the essential elements right into ten pages. Again things are familiar but very different and very dangerous.
Storm troopers have laser swords!  Sorry no light sabers here and the familiar fanon can get you killed quite easily.
There are other faces that are seen through a glass darkly and their not at all as you might remember them. Tarkin as a good guy! Oh my!

Luke, Leia, Han are all different and their are many veterans of other conflicts in the background. The Empire is expanding, the Star Killer is retiring, and the death star is moving ever so slowly towards universe domination!
This is a brand new universe and you can put your own thumb print on it. The author does an excellent job of sketching this out and it would work rather well as a campaign.

I've been a long time reader of the Star Killer 'The Jedi Bendu' site.
In their words :
"From this site you can read and download the early drafts and original shooting scripts, see the spectacular pre-production art of Ralph McQuarrie and Alex Tavoularis, read discerning essays and articles about the STAR WARS Saga and directly participate with your own artwork and texts.
The Jedi Bendu is a group of devoted fans who collect and treasure the original drafts and shooting scripts of the STAR WARS saga. Formed in 1995 by “old-timers” who remembered the halcyon days of 1977."

Using The Source Book for Your Old School Space Opera
Campaigns
Playing lets fool the players with this source book is going to get rather old rather fast. The fact is this material is easily adaptable and feels rather new. Suddenly a lot of those fantastic early pre production paintings by Ralph Mcquarrie star wars art books make a whole lot more sense and those are your go to artwork for getting your players in the right frame of mind.
The worlds, aliens, and creatures seem familiar but this is a different galaxy and there's more room to carve out your own mythology, adventures, and changes within it.
In my humble opinion this material actually fits OD&D as well as the retroclones quite well. The feel is very much pulp and within the old school tradition of adventure building.
In a nutshell the author did some excellent work and this is a fantastic resource with which to start an OD&D star wars game in a galaxy slightly farther away.

If you want to download and read some of the original Lucas scripts from the Jedi Bendu site their available right over
HERE!

These may provide more valuable insight into the source book link above and provide you the DM with background you might need!
In no way shape or form I'm I trying to violate any of the trademarks or copyrights of the holders of  Star Wars, Ralph McQuarrie's artwork  or the efforts of Brendon Wahlberg. THis review is for entertainment purposes only.
This is simply the ramblings of a fan of both Star Wars and the hard work of the
Star Killer 'The Jedi Bendu' site.
Rest in Peace
Maestro McQuarrie
Thanks for all the dreams and wonderful artwork.

Vintage Marvel Star Wars Comics Tag Sale Find - More Resources On The Cheap For Your Old School Science Fiction Campaigns

So today's tag sale find in town today consisted of seven Marvel Star Wars Comics at the bottom of a box labeled 'sewing machine parts' from a tag sale!
Considered by many hard core Star Wars fans to be apocryphal at best these are in my humble opinion some of the very best sources of vintage Star Wars information for running an OD&D based Star Wars Game the way it was meant to be played.
These comics left the back door open for DM's to add or subtract much of the material that Marvel added between movies and it was pretty weird stuff. The comics treated lightly on the canon of the movies and was easily reconned when a new movie came out.
That didn't stop millions of OD&D players from using these comics as the basis for weird and wholly adventures in the past or West End Game fans from using these as canon for their campaigns as well.
These days Dark Horse has collected many of these into single volumes but to find these was a plus for my Saturday considering I only paid a dollar for the box!

The other resources for Star Wars!

Want to go even further out in a galaxy far, far, away? How about a whole different take on Luke Star Killer? A whole different era of the Empire and when the Princess of Ondos
“needed help!

apocryphal universes of your own.

Samurai Star Wars By Clinton Felker! Awesome

brings a whole new meaning to the adapt "Star Wars To This Era" craze. These are insanely nice. I can't really say which ones I like more. They're even more detailed then you can see here. His site has them all in very beautiful detail. I know that the samurai movies of the 60s from Japan were a huge influence on George Lucas, to tell you the truth I want to see this movie rather then the new 3 D Star Wars release. You can buy the Boba Fett one on ebay for 35.00 which isn't bad at all. For me to say that I'm not going to be filing these away someplace for a future Star Wars game would be me lying very badly. Anyhow from his ebay add - Hello my name is Clinton Felker. I'm a concept artist. This is my interpretation of what Star Wars Characters would look like if they lived in Feudal Japan. I have done a series of character concepts. This one is of Boba Fett in multiple view for fabrication.
You can see all of these in great detail Here
