Commentary on 'Mandy: Book of Monsters - Comic Anthology' Kickstarter by Hellbound Media

Who fights the monsters under the bed of kids? Who takes down the nightmares of children that crawl from under the deepest corners of children's dreams and the dark parts of our imagination? Mandy is our newest hero. She's got a brand new Kickstarter coming from Hellbound Media.
"Every child knows that a monster lives under the bed. Or perhaps they lurk in the wardrobe, or down below in the basement, or up above in the attic? The home isn't the only place monsters can be found either. Under the old bridge, in the derelict and abandoned house, or perhaps lurking in the undergrowth at the bottom of the garden – monsters are everywhere, every child knows that. Mandy is here to hunt each and everyone of them" . She's got a brand new Kickstarer right over HERE

I had the fortunate pleasure of having incredibly talented friends, in this case I've been quietly watching from the sidelines while two very talented writers and their artists from Hellbound media have put together a brand new Kickstarter for a horror anthology comic book; in this case  Mandy: Book of Monsters - a comic anthology  a brand new character with some very cool supernatural elements. Mark Adams & Matt Warner have a pretty cracking concept for their horror anthology, Every child knows that a monster lives under the bed.
Mandy hunts Monsters. Her name is whispered on the playground, a legend amongst the children of the world. Whatever creature troubles you, when the adults won't listen, it is Mandy that can help you out. All you need to do is draw a picture of the beast, and it will reach her.
Straddling the line between childhood imagination, and threatening entities in the dark, Mandy the Monster Hunter encounters all manner of creatures, great and small. Have no doubt, she's the thing that the things in the dark are afraid of...

So Mandy not only battles her monsters and hunts them but has armor made from the monsters she battles and hunts. By all accounts she's a damn strong character in a children's style comic book. Over coming childhood nightmares and monsters under the bed has always been a bit of underdeveloped area in comics and graphic novels but I really where the company is taking this title. For example this is one of Mandy's first appearances, with art  by Anna Pennlund. You can read the whole comic right over HERE

According to the Kickstarter Hellbound Media has a commitment to getting this title out into the wild with a combination of some of the best independent artists, writers, and other professionals:"Hellbound Media has been entirely self-funded since its inception, and as we expand our titles dip our toe into coloured artwork, we find the initial costs getting higher. We're here to ask you to help us bring our most ambitious book yet to life. “Mandy: Book of Monsters” will feature a combination of atmospheric, shaded black and white art, and full-colour storylines, alongside some original pin-ups and exclusive material."
Do I think that this Kickstarter is worth your time and coin? Yes, yes, I do.

King Solomon's Mines-Classics Reimagined On Indie Go Go Campaign

See & Support The Campaign Right Over

This is a new Indie Go Go campaign for the King Solomon's Mines graphic novel. This is an old school style of the great pulps & comics that came before it. This is a whole new cloth take on one of the greatest novels of Darkest Africa. H.Rider Haggard's classic is taken and turned upon its ear into an exciting visual feast of adventure and fury.
To get this project off the ground your help is needed. This is a project with a great solid background to help to cement this visual feast of H.Rider Haggard's masterpiece of adventure, fortune, and glory.
According to the authors and artists :
"Welcome to the new KING SOLOMON'S MINES --a colorful and sexy new 48 page graphic novel by Pablo Marcos & Mark Ellis!

The KING SOLOMON'S MINES graphic novel is a fresh take on H.Rider Haggard's classic tale of adventure and treasure hunting in 19th century Africa."

While Mark Ellis weaves a complex tale with its own history and mythos into the back story of the mines of King Solomon. The artwork is furnished by
Pablo (Conan The Barbarian, Tales of the Zombie) Marcos, whose work in comic books needs no introduction. The team takes a brand new slant on the adventurers of Rider and gives them a grounding in the best of the old school comic and pulp tradition with a distinctly modern veneer. This is tale that is worthy of Rider and I'm familiar with both of these professionals work over the years.
I can see this angle of professionalism being applied to other properties and expanded into a full range of pulpastic adventure. Personally I can't wait but this is a project that will need the help and support of the fans to make this happen.

This adaptation by the team of legendary comics illustrator Pablo (Conan The Barbarian, Tales of the Zombie) Marcos and best-selling author Mark (Outlanders, Doc Savage, Justice Machine) Ellis brings a new and colorful perspective to the Victorian-era yarn.

But this is only the beginning. There will be more following this incredible tale of adventure. The team has been hard at work applying their considerable skills to developing other classics reimagined into full blown graphic novel extravaganzas.
According to the indie Go Go project blurb:

The KING SOLOMON'S MINES graphic novel by Pablo Marcos and Mark Ellis is just the first of several planned projects (with Ying Ko Graphics) featuring "reimagined" classic adventure heroes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's CHALLENGER rendered here by the ever-awesome Jeff Slemons, Jules Verne's NEMO by the uber-talented Steven E Gordon and of course, HR Haggard's QUATERMAIN, by the legendary Pablo Marcos.
But of course none of this work happens without your support and now that the campaign has come to Indie Go Go. The whole project can't go forward nor a series come into existence without the help of those who would love to see this pulptastic project see the light of day. Take a few moments and take a look. I'll be watching this project closely and seeing as the pieces for King Solomon's Mines fall into place.

King Solomon's Mines-Classics Reimagined by Stephan Friedt Graphic Novel Kickstarter Reminder

Get This Funded Right Over
There are only eleven days to go on the King Solomon's Mines Graphic novel! There needs to be a push to get this wonderful tale funded and gotten to market! The romance, intensity, and ideas of Haggard are brought to exciting life by top talents in the comic book and graphic novel world but it can't happen without your support!
According to the Kickstarer site:
This adaptation by the team of legendary comics illustrator Pablo (Conan The Barbarian, Tales of the Zombie) Marcos and best-selling author Mark (Outlanders, Doc Savage, Justice Machine) Ellis brings a new and colorful perspective to the Victorian-era yarn.
Now look I of all people know that times are tough and tight but this is a great project and the material will be treated with the respect and admiration that it deserves.
 The intended series...
From the top talents to the artwork this graphic novel is a throw back to a time when pulp magazines & comic books featured incredible artwork and design. The team on this one knows the material and ideas of where to go with it. They'll do a killer job with this property but only if it gets funded.
So here we've got a great project that has a new take on this classic pulp work and like so many of the incredible wonderful other projects this one needs your help. I've seen some of the artwork associated with this one and its a great take on the Haggard material. There is a certain epicness associated with King Solomon's Mines and a feeling of continuing almost pulp level journey that comes with the writing and artwork.

I've followed these folks various projects and products for years and I have no doubt that this one if successful is going to be one hell of a graphic novel and possibly the start of a series. This is a case of  a project having to start someplace. I'm biting at the bit to see this enter the public arena as an actual graphic novel. But as I've said this project can't happen without you! Take a look, reach into your pocket and get this one funded.
King Solomon's Mines
And an this is an epic take on Haggard's all time classic and with a bit of a twist or two to keep even the most hard core pulp hound interested for the entire way. King Solomon's Mines is part hero's journey and part adventure into a world of epic adventure and pulptastic story telling in the old school tradition with a brand new spin.
But it can't happen without your help.

One thing about this project, Ellis and co always support their various projects with Facebook groups and more. You can join this Facebook group right over HERE

Heads Up On The King Solomon's Mines-Classics Reimagined Kick Starter Going On Now!

 Fund it Right Over
Here

Some great comic book professionals are putting together a great forty eight page graphic novel of epic porporations. This is a brand new take on the old classic and takes the classic material back to its pulp roots and then brings it into an epic and action packed direction but of course it needs funding and all of the other myriad costs that come with such graphic projects.
I know the incredible work of the artists, writers, and folks involved. This is a straight up venture that I can't wait to see more magic of the folks involved.
According to the Kick starter page :

King Solomon's Mines
.  The work will really focus on the hero's journey into the world of Allen Quarterman and continue to pull the reader into the artists and writer's take on the world that Haggard created. We see a totally different take on King Solomon's Mine while pinning down the hero and cast for further adventures. A very nice bit of slight of hand work while entertaining the audience here in this graphic novel.

One thing about this project, Ellis and co always support their various projects with Facebook groups and more. You can join this Facebook group right over HERE

I love the sheer fun and incredible pulp artwork & writing  that is associated with this project. Its nice to see the Haggard material being used properly and with a nice old school take here. I'm going to continue to follow this project and see where it goes. Please take a moment and let's get Haggard's  Darkest Africa into the hands of modern pulp readers.

Mark Ellis's Justice Machine Objects of Power Graphic Novel Released!

s
Grab It Right Over
HERE
Mark Ellis has finally released the latest incarnation of the Machine for those of us who know who the 'Justice Machine is. This is the latest incarnation of one of the more interesting supers groups that came out back when comic books took risks back in the early 80's.
Who are the Justice Machine? Well, Wiki has a nice break down:

In the first two versions of the team, the Justice Machine is an elite law enforcement agency from the planet Georwell, aparallel world with advanced technology that the Machine members believe is a utopia. Arriving on Earth in pursuit of Maxinor, a criminal and accused terrorist from their world, the team members soon discover that Georwell is much morefascist and dystopian than they had previously believed. Meanwhile the Georwellian authorities have activated a second team, called 'the Guardians' in the Noble series, or the New Justice Machine in the Comico series.
Zarren, their superior, has the Machine indicted as traitors and they have no choice but to remain on Earth. Zarren recognizes that Georwell's government is corrupt, but he has no desire to change the system; he merely wants to advance to a position of more power. The Machine's idealism might interfere with his own personal goals. Later, Zarren falls victim to his own schemes and must flee to Earth, where he sets himself up as the president of small South American island, the Arriba Atoll.
"Georwell" is a play on George Orwell, the author of 1984, and the society of Georwell is based on the society of 1984, though much more technically advanced.
Object of Power, an original Justice Machine graphic novel by Ellis and artists David Enebral and Ivan Barriga is scheduled to be published by Bluewater Productions in 2014.

More right over
HERE
According to Mark Ellis's Ink blog:
The Justice Machine: Object of Power is not just a new adventure of the team. The over-arching plot explains, expands and rectifies long-standing  mysteries of the convoluted backstory.
In the third issue of The Justice Machine produced by Noble Comics, the team joined New Haven, an Earth organization operated by a mystery man named Hammet Dash. The intention was for the Machine to learn that New Haven was as totalitarian as the Georwell government had been, but those stories were never told. In 1983, after publishing five issues of The Justice Machine, Noble comics folded.
Texas Comics published the Justice Machine Annual #1, which continued the Noble continuity. Another issue was completed, but printed several years later by Innovation as a “Summer Spectacular”.
In 1985, when the Justice Machine was picked up by Comico, it underwent a reboot, partly to accommodate the inclusion of Bill Willingham’s popular super-team, The Elementals but also because of the two-year publication gap between The Justice Machine Annual and issue #1 of The Justice Machine Featuring The Elementals.
JMELEMENTALS#1
In the Comico version, the team joined New Atlantis, a utopian society located on an artificial island created by Dash Hamilton. Despite the similarities to the Noble comics backstory, the continuity established in the Comico series is the one considered official. It’s the one I followed when I wrote the Machine for Innovation and Millennium.
I always had a germ of an idea about blending the two continuities, but I never gave it too much thought.
When Dynamite Comics approached me about either licensing or purchasing the Justice Machine property but with the caveat they had the right to reboot the series, I turned down the offers–twice. Although there were other  issues affecting my refusal, I didn’t care for the proposal of rebooting The Justice Machine yet again.
As far as I was concerned, it wasn’t necessary– the original concept of Georwell had never been adequately explored…or its weird connection to George Orwell’s 1984 ever explained.
George-Orwell-1984
Granted, it would have been easier just to start over—and maybe do away with that whole exiles-from-a-totalitarian-world origin—but I felt those underpinnings were integral to making the Justice Machine unique among countless other super-hero teams…not to mention making them so fondly remembered after 30-plus years.
However, I did want to make some changes—first and foremost with the Justice Machine’s costumes. Always in the past, the members of the Machine wore individualized outfits but this time around I wanted more a uniform look.
3JM
To that end, I wanted them to wear a unifying insignia, a scales of justice within a gear wheel, first designed by Darryl Banks and refined by Melissa Martin-Ellis. The insignia is functional, serving a variety of purposes.
JMINSIGNIA BLK
Artist Roberto Castro came up with several renditions of new uniforms for the team, but I preferred the final designs by Preston Asevedo, although he had gone in the direction of individualized costumes first as well. When the new design was finalized, Preston and color artist Deirdre DeLay-Pierpoint stayed as close to the original color schemes of the characters as possible.
REVJM_Character_Colorrevise2
While the visuals were being  worked on, I crafted the basic storyline, knowing all along the prologue would pick up a year after the last issue of the Millennium series.  From there, we would move forward to create a new continuity without violating anything that had come before—including the five issues published by Noble so long ago.
Object of Power introduces a retooled Justice Machine and basically returns the team to square one.
So, where does The Justice Machine go from there?
Anywhere, actually…but when and where is something I can’t predict.

The Mega Dungeons Of Total Recall - An Old School Campaign Idea For Your Science Fantasy Game

File:Total recall.jpg

The other night I was watching Total Recall the 1990 blockbuster with Arnold & it struck me that there's a perfectly good Mega Dungeon stuck right into the middle of the film!

Who knows what other secrets the mine contains?
The pyramid mine is a multi level mine on the surface of Mars where the rare fuel tribinum is mined!

Mars of Total Recall has an atmosphere & is in the middle of being exploited for its natural resources.

The place is mostly a space colony settled around the Pyramid Mine with mutants, hookers, miners, & a very repressive government

Its a far cry from the world of  Barsoom but is it?

This is a Mars much closer to Robinson Crusoe on Mars actually!

This an ancient Mars where all of the life has disappeared & only the ancient relics remain to be found.
The mutants,VenusVille, etc elements all come much later! This is a used up Mars & its been thoroughly explored.

It always seemed to me that this guy knew there was ancient relics down in his mine!

Perhaps Hauser knew that they were there long before they began to exploit all that Trinbinum in the mine.
How?  Planetary administrator Vilos Cohaagen  has knowledge about the relics in the Pyramid mine but not what it or they are or do. Who did the real exploration?

Commander Christopher 'Kit' Draper had already been there & discovered the methods by which man might survive on Mars!

First, he burns some coal-like rocks for warmth and accidentally discovers that heating them gives off oxygen. This allows him to refill his air tank and move around in the thin atmosphere.
Robinson Crusoe of Mars

This is what's left of Mars in the 1964 movie. Yet under the planet Mars are millions of miles of tunnels
Then we've got shots like this one.  Could those be some of the remains of Green Thark villages?

There might be more just a few buried secrets down in that plant
This might simply be the start of something more!
The mine might connect to far more then that one giant atmosphere plant. There could be hundreds of tunnels lined with antechambers. The alien remains of kings, traps, etc.

If we speculate that 'Friday' from Robinson Crusoe is a red man then perhaps the Sarnmak took the remains of the Barsoomians lock, stock, & barrel off world. They might be using them only as slave labor to mine the remains of the  turbinium ore  on the surface when & where they can!

These guys certainly fit the general pattern for Wells Sarnmak aliens. These ships operate in threes & they're ruthlessly exploiting their slave labor force

Then there's that turbinium ore that powers the reactor. The psionic mutants that get those echoes about the reactor might be the remains of the telepathy that the Barsoomians used on a daily basis.  What about Vilos Cohaagen, the ruthless director of the Mars Colony and friend of Hauser who stops at nothing in the mining of turbinium ore which places innocent people at risk. His strangle hold on the planet is nothing short of spectacular
He knows it all. Every dirty little secret about the plan, the people, he knows where the bodies are buried.
How?
The answer is that for years the various corporations have been exploiting the knowledge of the various expeditions to the planet in the past
 The
novel Total Recall  had a subplot wherein the aliens planted a fail safe device within their Mars technology, so that if it were misused or destroyed, the local star would go nova and therefore prevent the species from entering the galactic community. It coincided with a comment earlier in the novel that astronomers were noticing an abnormal number of recent supernovae, giving an indication that the aliens seeded their tech as part of a galactic experiment in technological maturity

There are few other films which use the idea of a fossilized Mars being exploited by mankind only to have the past bite them in the ass.
Ghosts of Mars
Comes To mind

Another Mars that almost goes extinct at the hands of ancient original inhabitants

The Legacy Of VenusVille Or Ten Ways To Use Total Recall In Your OSR Game

  1. Before Hauser ever existed perhaps there was  an expedition down into some of the unexplored galleries of the mine. What if your party was that team? Could they have been memory wiped & placed on Earth as well?
  2. Could the  turbinium ore have been used by a Cthulhu Mythos race as well as the Martians say The Great Race? Perhaps there might be other reactors on other planets that use this stuff?
  3. Wad there a reason for the creation of the mutants that it wasn't simple chance? Are the mutant populations being groomed for something greater? Could they be the next Martians or is there a more sinister purpose? Could your party find out?
  4. Venusville has lots of hidden alleys & secrets who or what might be lurking in there?
  5. If   Vilos Cohaagen, the ruthless director of the Mars Colony is dead what other corporations might be willing to take his place? Could he actually be alive on Earth & planning a coup? Could your party find out?
  6. Could certain sensitive folks have racial astral memories of the Martains implanted within their RNA? Could your players be some of those folks & only a trip to Recall will help retrieve them?
  7. A trip deep into the Pyramid Mine reveals a Shaggoth! What other secrets are down in the lower galleries?
  8. Turbinium Ore is found on other planets within the solar system or beyond! What is the connection to the Pyramid mine! Can your players find out & live to exploit the knowledge?
  9. Keuto Lives! The memories, knowledge, etc of the mutant revolutionary were passed onto another mutant but who or what was it? Could the characters find out?
  10. The reactor was only the start of it! Hundreds of incidents of alien technology erupts across the face of the planet. Can your party find out why? Can they live to tell the tale let alone remember it?

    The Relics Of Conquest

Ghosts of Mars offers some unique ideas here as well. The alien species that we see might actually fit right into a Total Recall style of game. Imagine what happens when 2 separate species wake up at the same time? Could these two be ancient enemies fighting through the eons each time a new set of settlers come to Mars? Could the party sent to investigate be placed at the center of a 12 million year old war?
Could someone possessed be given over to the tender mercies of a recall chair device tumble through the ages to remember answers to the present war?

                The Recall Connection

Recall itself offers a DM endless possibilities for adventure hooks from a total brain screw job on a player's character to using the company as a front for a mind flayer style operation. The possibilities are endless when you go recall!*

Thursday Night Flash - Goulart & Kane's Star Hawks & His Other Original Creation

Space 1970 is perhaps one of the coolest blogs out there. Every day he's put out content that blows away anything out there when it comes to our collective science fiction media from the era when Luke swung in the Death Star & they weren't brother & sister. So today he's covered Goulart & Kane's Star Hawks. A news paper strip that ran in the 70s that most people have never heard of. Its really a crime because the series was one of the more incredible space opera pieces that came out. Read about it Here
Gil Kane was perhaps one of the great giants to walk this Earth as far as comics goes.He was responsible for the modern look of both Green Lantern, The Atom, & many others. I can't even begin to cover what this man did. Read about him Gil_Kane
I want to talk about his greatest creation Black Mark! The first true American Graphic Novel.
Black Mark is a cracking good Sword & Scorcery piece that delivers everything it promises. Beautiful artwork, fantastic story, & the kind of  world that every Dungeon Master wants to create! Very cool with lots of action, adventure, & romance!
Here's some samples of the art work:
