Back In '81 Raiders Of The Lost Ark Was Released!

For Matinee Monday I  wanted to cover the 30 year release of  Raiders of  The Lost Ark! I saw this film with a bunch of friends at a local theater & it did my head in back in '81.  Released on June 12, 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark became the top-grossing film of 1981.The plot in case you don't know it is: .1.  Raiders of the Lost Ark (also known as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) is a 1981 American action-adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by George Lucas, and starring Harrison Ford. It is the first (chronologically the second) film in the Indiana Jonesfranchise. It pits Indiana Jones (Ford) against the Nazis, who search for the Ark of the Covenant, because Adolf Hitler believes it will make their army invincible.
Nuff Said
It remains one of the highest-grossing films ever made.[2] It was nominated for eight Academy Awards in 1982, including Best Picture, and won four (Best Art DirectionBest Film Editing,Best Sound MixingBest Visual Effects) as well as winning a fifth Special Achievement Academy Award in Sound Editing.

Characters from the Indy movies:

Indy & The OSR

Do I really need to say anything about the cultural impact of this movie? If your not stealing elements of this movie for your game or campaign is there a point to doing a pulp or rpg campaign at all?  Ok I'm going to avoid using Coc  & most of the easily thought of table top resources out there.

Dr. Jones attempts to navigate an OSR trap. Will he succeed?

How To Make An Indiana Jones Adventure Without Ripping  Off Raiders !

  1. Use The Lester Dent Pulp Paper Master Fiction Plot!

  2. Use any of the following for inspiration for an Npc patron or character
    1. Heinrich_Schliemann
      1. Roy_Chapman_Andrews
    1. The character type has a lot in common with the Rogue (or Thief in older editions) class in D&D. Sneaks around, detects traps, figures out how to use magic items, etc.Have a party made up of  adventurer archaeologists just use the thief class
  3.  Remember that the locations are as much a character as the npcs. There should a bunch of  exotic set pieces. These places can be destroyed & no one will be the wiser.
  4. Raid this site  Dirty 30s  for everything you might need from equipment to weapons
  5. The pulps are your friend use them http://thepulp.net/
  6. A bit of research on the Adventurer Archaeologist here AdventurerArchaeologist
  7. Don't forget that the main bad guys should have "the Nazi" somewhere in the background for a science fiction game there's these these Space_Nazis or for a real life game Fictional_Nazis
  8. Use one of these object from legend as the goal of the adventure Fictional_objects
  9. Lots & lots of action! Above all let the characters think that their going to die at every turn
A quick side note  the Adventurer Archaeologist works in a post apocalypse or interstellar  setting as well as fantasy where the trappings of science fiction allow the character to really shine!
  10. Use this table for traps in a science fiction setting Science fiction traps!
A great current setting that might help as well is the Trey's The City

Finally there is this man's channel! He's used some "forgotten" films to make what he calls premakes. Sort of what ifs of films had been made before they were! They're awesome in my humble opinion. Go check out his youtube channel for more inspirations! He worked pretty damn hard on them. I have no connection  to him accept to admire his work http://www.youtube.com/user/whoiseyevan#p/c/1F5BA3F019C6FC48
Now why I'm I covering Raiders on a Monday because I saw it as party of a Matinee!
