OSR Review & Commentary - Subsector Sourcebook: Mazu By John Watts For The Clement Sector Rpg & Cepheus Engine Rpg

Subsector Sourcebook: Mazu is a setting expansion published by Independence Games for their sci-fi 2D6 / Cepheus Engine space opera universe (Earth Sector / Clement Sector).

Overview & Setting Context

  • Subsector Placement: Subsector F of Earth Sector. It borders Gansu ("The Chinese Gate"), frontier subsectors along the quadrant's edge, and the core Earth Subsector itself.

  • Etymology & Theme: Named after Mazu, the Chinese sea goddess and protector of sailors and ocean travelers. The sourcebook highlights how this mythic background translates into a haven for long-range traders, explorers, and colonial fleets making the transit between the inner systems and outer frontiers.

Key Factions & Planetary Lore

While intended as the starting point for a planned Chinese expansion, historical and geopolitical shifts left Mazu populated by an eclectic mix of international presence:

  • United States Colonies: Mazu houses the majority of American colonies within Earth Sector.

  • Multinational Enclaves: Significant colonial presence established by India, Argentina, Japan, Australia, and Nigeria.

  • The "Lone Chinese Colony": Features a single, strategic Chinese colonial base—originally meant to be the vanguard of a broader subsector initiative before political shifts halted further expansion.

What's Inside the Sourcebook

Like other books in the Earth Sector subsector series, Subsector Sourcebook: Mazu is designed primarily as a sandbox resource for Referees running 2D6 / Cepheus Engine campaigns.

  • System & World Maps: Full physical breakdown, planetary maps, and astrography for every world in Hex Quadrant 1 / Subsector F.

  • System Data & UWP Profiles: Complete Universal World Profiles (UWPs) detailing tech levels, starports, hydrographics, atmosphere, and gravity.

  • Socio-Political Profiles: Breakdown of local government structures, legal codes, law levels, demographic makeup, and regional cultures across the international colonies.

  • Refining Plot Hooks: Encounter guides, local trade route logistics, and political friction points between multinational sovereign bases.

Product Availability

  • System: Cepheus Engine / 2D6 Space Opera

  • Publisher: Independence Games

  • Formats: Available in PDF, Softcover, and Hardcover via DriveThruRPG and the Independence Games store (also sold bundled in the Earth Sector Quadrant 1 Bundle).

The Mazu, Gansu, and Adroanzi subsectors form the northern frontier of Earth Sector (Quadrant 1). While all three border deep space or Earth Sector’s interior, they present three vastly different geopolitical landscape models.

Key Comparisons

1. Political Alignment & Governance

  • Mazu (Multi-National Patchwork): Governed directly by competing national outposts from Earth. It is dominated politically by the United States, alongside strong bases from middle-power nations (India, Argentina, Nigeria, Japan, Australia).

  • Gansu (Superpower Gateway): Known as the "Chinese Gate," Gansu is dominated by China's eight strategic systems, balanced against nine independent worlds and established European colonies (UK and Italy). Political tension revolves around controlling trade flowing into outer space.

  • Adroanzi (Unified Anti-Earth Bloc): Unlike Mazu or Gansu, Adroanzi features zero Earth-nation colonies. Instead, its scattered mining worlds united into a single polity—the Antiochian Union—specifically to resist control, taxation, and intervention from Earth's national governments.

2. Astrography & Strategic Value

  • Mazu: Serves as a transit sector and buffer region. Bordering Gansu, Earth Subsector, and the wild frontier subsectors, Mazu acts as a oceanic highway for explorers and long-haul traders.

  • Gansu: Functions as a choke point and trade engine. Its astrographical choke points allow the Chinese navy and trade corporations to funnel traffic, extract customs tariffs, and project power.

  • Adroanzi: Positioned as the far edge of the frontier. It acts as the gateway into adjacent uncharted sectors (Fjarron, Sacrament, and Ophelia Sectors). Its worlds are resource-scarce and widely separated.

3. Social Dynamics & Demographics

  • Mazu: High cultural variety. A ship jumping between Mazu systems will hop between an American frontier boomtown, an Australian outpost, and an isolated Chinese naval station.

  • Gansu: High diplomatic friction. Gansu's worlds deal with intense superpower rivalry between Chinese administrative centers and independent human worlds clinging to their sovereignty.

  • Adroanzi: Unique demographic makeup. It is the only subsector in Earth Sector where the population is majority Uplifted animals and genetically modified Altrants. Most inhabitants were originally miners, dropouts, or refugees fleeing Earth-sponsored species discrimination.

Final Opinion & overview Subsector Sourcebook: Mazu is a very important and well written source book for the Earth sector. Because it gives a huge new piece of the Earth sector puzzle. John Watts does an excellent job of filling in the campaign material for the Earth sector. This book puts everything in the Chinese Earth sector campaign and setting. This is the book you as the DM is going to want to fill in the current Earth sector. Grab Subsector Sourcebook: Mazu to take on the inner Earth spacer's lives.

OSR Review & Commentary - Clement Sector Careers: The Engineer By Michael Johnson For The Clement Sector Rpg & Cepheus Engine Rpg

Clement Sector Careers: The Engineer is a specialized character supplement by Independence Games designed for the Cepheus Engine RPG.

Unlike standard sci-fi character creation options where an "Engineer" implies a starship mechanic wrenching on hyperdrives in an engine room, this supplement shifts the focus entirely to the architects, innovators, and designers who construct the 24th century.

The Core Distinction: The Designer vs. The Mechanic

In the standard Cepheus Engine core rules, engineering covers mid-flight maintenance and structural patches. The Engineer expands this into a full professional life-path focused on high-level R&D, structural design, and large-scale industrial creation. These are the visionaries responsible for orbital habitats, planet-side megastructures, jump-capable ship blueprints, terraforming grids, and cutting-edge biotech.

Key Structural Features

  • 8 Specialized Disciplines: Rather than a generic single-track career, characters choose from eight distinct specializations reflecting the demands of the subsectors (e.g., Aerospace/Starship Design, Civil/Structural Engineering, Cybernetics/Biomedical, Macro-Engineering).

  • Dedicated Skill Expansion: Introduces specialized skills and sub-skills tailored to technical theory, blueprint design, materials science, and project management.

  • Custom Life-Path Events & Mishaps: Features dedicated 2D6 tables reflecting corporate sabotage, failed prototype tests, catastrophic structural collapses, design patent disputes, and breakthrough Nobel-tier achievements.

  • Setting Integration: Integrates directly into the Clement Sector lore—giving PCs background hooks tied to major megacorporations, planetary development boards, and the isolation caused by the collapsed Subspace Conduit.

Adventuring Utility

An Engineer PC isn't built to stand in a gunfight, but they bring massive tactical and logistical value to a traveler group:

  1. System Diagnostics: Identifying structural flaws in enemy facilities, ship hulls, or planetary domes before combat starts.

  2. Field Repairs & Modifications: Overclocking tech, retrofitting gear using local materials, and diagnosing unknown alien or lost-tech artifacts.

  3. Salvage Valuation: Accurately assessing the true value and design integrity of derelict ships and facilities.

Specialization Skill Sets

Characters choose one of eight specializations upon entering the career, shaping their skill progression across four four-year terms:

  • Aerospace / Starship Design: Aircraft, Grav, Pilot, Ship Design, Systems Operation, Drive Mechanics. Focuses on hull geometry, jump drive integration, and atmospheric flight dynamics.

  • Civil / Environmental: Civil Engineering, Survival, Heavy Machinery, Terraforming, Hydrology, Structural Analysis. Focuses on planetary settlements, dome ecosystems, and harsh-world infrastructure.

  • Macro-Engineering: Orbital Construction, Heavy Machinery, Zero-G, Structural Analysis, Project Management, Mass Drivers. Focuses on megastructures, orbital yards, and space station architecture.

  • Cybernetics & Biomedical: Cybernetics, Medical, Life Support, Genetics, Robotics, Bio-Materials. Focuses on neural interfaces, life-support loops, and prosthetics.

  • Computer & AI Systems: Computers, Hacking, Electronics, Sensor Systems, AI Architecture, Cryptography. Focuses on deep-space comm networks, jump-calculators, and automated defense grids.

  • Industrial & Manufacturing: Manufacturing, Logistics, Materials Science, Quality Control, Prospecting, Robotics. Focuses on assembly lines, automated foundries, and raw material processing.

  • Weapons & Defense: Gunnery, Explosives, Ballistics, Armor Design, Energy Systems, Tactical Electronics. Focuses on naval ordnance, planetary defense batteries, and custom small arms.

  • Power & Propulsion: Power Systems, Nuclear Physics, Jump Physics, Sub-Light Drives, Shielding, Fuel Logistics. Focuses on reactor efficiency, fuel scoops, and dangerous drive overclocks.

Sample Character: Marcus Vance

Final Opinion & overview for Clement Sector Careers: The Engineer is a solid addition to the Clement Sector rpg range of books. The supplement not only rounds out one of the most detailed careers within the Clement Sector & Cepheus Engine rpgs. The engineer is a very valuable and essential part of a star ship or colony crew. The book gives some very well thought out and well written part of a group of spacers. Grab this book and add another key part of a party of adventurers and spacers.

Review & Commentary on The Loki-class Q-Ship By Michael Johnson For The Clement Sector Rpg

" A ghost in the fleet!'

"Based on the Thorpe-class Merchant, the Loki-class Q-Ship is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Designed to look like a harmless merchant and placed by the Boone Space Defense Force in locations where pirate activity is high, the Loki tempts the pirates to it and then strikes with no mercy."

"Perfect for use by those involved in fighting pirates or just as a ship for characters to use in their campaigns, the 800-tonne Loki is ideal for adventures."

"Crafted by Independence Games Spaceship Guru Michael Johnson with art by fan favorite artist Ian Stead, this book gives you all the essential details to make the Loki a central part of any Clement Sector campaign and could easily be used in other science fiction settings as well."

God, I love the new The Loki-class Q-Ship By Michael Johnson! Seriously this little ship is a perfect pirate hunter and adventurer's star ship. This ship is a serious pirate hunter of the highest order! And it's stated right from the get go;"A Q-ship is a type of warship designed to act as a decoy, disguised as an unarmed merchant vessel but secretly armed with powerful weaponry. The concept was first developed during the First World War by the Royal Navy, when German U-boats (Unterseeboots) posed a major threat to Allied shipping in the English Channel and the far larger Atlantic Ocean. Thought to be so named due to their links with Queenstown harbor (located in County Cork in Ireland) Q-ships masqueraded as easy prey, luring submarines to surface and attack with their deck guns at which point the seemingly harmless vessel would reveal its hidden armaments, often concealed behind false structures or collapsible panels, and engage the attacker. This tactic aimed to exploit the U-boats reliance on conserving torpedoes by using surface attacks against lightly defended merchantmen."
The Loki class Q star ship looks like  Thorpe-class Merchant, but under the hood it's anything but! This hunter packs a punch or two! The weapons and attitude of this ship is exactly what the Frontier of the Clement sector needs!

This is a great adventurer's ship with a crew of forty eight and the pdf of The Loki-class Q-Ship lays everything out for integrating this little demon & pirate hunter right into the Frontier of the Clement sector. The Boone Space Defense Force knows what it's doing with this ship deploying it in areas with lots and lots pirate activity. Michael Johnson's writing is on point in this little forty eight page supplement for the Clement Sector setting. It was Ian Stead's artwork that drew me into the Clement Sector rpg & for The Loki-class Q-Ship By Michael Johnson it's on point.

The Loki-class Q-Ship By Michael Johnson is for me an essential star ship for the Clement Sector rpg. This is a perfectly aligned pirate hunter and adventurer's star ship because it allows the PC's to bloody the nose's of pirates and marauder's star craft. This includes some of the variations of the Loki Q which can and will find their ways into local systems and adventurer's hands.
This puts the fire power of the Loki class into the hands of those on the Frontier who need them.

The trade lanes of the frontier of the Clement system needs the Loki Q class for anti marauder and pirate activities in spades. The whole of the Loki Q supplement is a great supplement for the Clement sector rpg on many fronts. Grab this one!

OSR Review & Commentary On The Grand Duke of Kyiv Destroyer series For The Clement Sector Rpg

"The Grand Duke of Kyiv Destroyer series is a group of four ships using the same hull type with different armaments and roles. Built for speed and aggression, these four vessels are meant to defend the Kyiv system against what the Grand Duke feels is imminent Cascadian expansion."
The Grand Duke of Kyiv Destroyer series For The Clement Sector Rpg is awesome and a defense/attack spaceship that excels at it's role. There are four different configurations for the
Kyiv Destroyer. This star ship sends a message of 'don't mess with this system'. Why?!

The Grand Duke of Kyiv Destroyer series is a mobile fortress that serves as a planetary defense and attack mobile system perfect for the Space Western setting of Clement Sector. This means that as a base for PC's the starship carries the weight of it's role within the Clement Sector. These craft are not to be taken lightly! Seriously with the weapons and over arching configurations the roles of these craft can ruin the day of many a would be tyrant. " Written and designed by Independence Games Starship Guru Michael Johnson (with fiction by the author) and art by fan-favorite artist Ian Stead" are right on point within the Grand Duke of Kyiv Destroyer series. This makes the Grand Duke of Kyiv Destoryer easy to get into.

The Grand Duke of Kyiv Destroyer series For The Clement Sector Rpg is a great flag ship starcraft. This ship sets the mark for the Clement sector & the alignment of the star craft make a statement for protection, aggression, and danger. The writing & artwork are on point. Grab this one because it fits the Earth sector & Clement sector campaign setting.

Review & Commentary On The Type E Pursuit Ship By Michael Johnson For The Clement Sector Rpg or 2d6 Cepheus Engine rpg

 "Hot pursuit!

"The Type E Pursuit Ship is designed to pursue enemy or pirate vessels within the Cascadia system, within potential Cascadian colony systems, or even through the Zimm Point to continue the pursuit.  The Cascadia Naval Service use them as patrol vessels and as an escorts for Cascadia Colonization Authority (CCA) scout ships."

'Always seen in their triple formation, the Type E is a formidable enemy for small naval vessels, pirates, and possibly your characters!"

The Type E Pursuit Ship is a warship and anti pirate ship with little in the way of tactics & variation. Or so it would seem, while this vessel has a role as an  pursue enemy or pirate star ships there's a lot more going on here. The Type E is a ship type with a valiant history and deep roles within the Cascadia system & colonies. These ships are a part of the Cascadian identity.
Ian Stead and the artists here give a excellent series of pieces of artwork which show off the roles and profile that these ships have. This is highlighted by the excellent writing of Michael Johnson showcasing the role of colony escort and patrol ship. Crews of 22 man these incredible starships out in the blackness and void of space. And while not a main line ship the

Type E Pursuit Ship is a nasty customer to come up against. These ships can pursue a ship with powerful drive systems & dive right after the Zim point.

The Type E Pursuit Ship is the perfect ship for anti piracy actions within the huge unexplored regions of  interstellar space. Because these space craft are crewed by whole cloth crews that can operate entirely on their own. The Type E are the cavalry for the colonies under their patrol. These are perfect  star ships to add to your Clement sector rpg campaign.

Review & Commentary The Freedom-class Merchant Vessel Written by Independence Games starship guru, Michael Johnson For The Clement Sector Rpg

"The Freedom-class Merchant Vessel is a starship from the days before grav drives and grav plates changed everything. A 400-tonne ship built in 2204 and squarely marketed to those enterprising enough to brave the frontier and head out to the new colonies in Earth Sector and Clement Sector, the ship was state of the art in its time. Now, over a hundred years later, the ship could be considered a bit of a dinosaur yet many continue to swear by this stalwart, especially the waldlaufers in Ariel Sector who value nothing more than their independence and their Freedoms."

"Written by Independence Games starship guru, Michael Johnson, inside this book you'll find a detailed breakdown of the Freedom-class, including its history, specifications, deck plans, and multiple variants”plus financing options, cargo configurations, and planetary landing procedures. Alongside these essential details, dive into A Visit to Miss Kitty's, a short story by John Watts that gives insight into the life of a waldlaufer making his way in a dangerous universe."

The Freedom-class Merchant Vessel  written by Independence Games starship guru, Michael Johnson is one of those trader starships is perfect for the adventuring party within Clement sector. Why?! Because star ships such as the Freedom class Merchant vessels are the heart and soul of the colonies in the Clement sector rpg campaign setting.
There are a couple of other details about this starship that make it perfect for an adventurer's star craft. One is the fact that this ship has a low crew compliment, lots of great details & this ship can take a high value and low value cargoes.  The Freedom class is
400-tonne ship built in 2204 and squarely marketed to those enterprising enough to brave the frontier. This means that the Freedom is perfect for an experienced group of adventurers and traders. Since the Clement sector is an Old West analogy the Freedom is the perfect bridge gap between the 'Black' and the deep  colonies of the Clement sectors.
The Freedom-class Merchant Vessel is well written and the artists do a fantastic job of bringing the Freedom to life. The layout for this book is well done, the font is easy on the eyes, and this book is up to Independence Games usual standards.

The Freedom-class Merchant Vessel  is a fantastic starship for adventurers because is creates an opportunity for adventure and trade among the stars of the Clement sector. As a side hustle for adventurers the Freedom merchant class presents a classic star craft in the tradition of 2d6 classic Science Fiction rpg. The year is 2342.  Adventure awaits in the crew quarters of the Freedom class merchant vessel..

OSR Review & Commentary On Independence Games Contessa Class Fast Trader By Michael Johnson For The Clement Sector rpg

Out in the midst of the frontier of the Clement sector, there are times when you need a dual roled star ship and that starship is the Contessa class Fast Trader.
This is an award winning Anderson & Felix class ship 600 ton  starship that competes with Borne's Thorpe class vessels.
The Contessa Class Fast Trader is a mean ship able to take full advantage of the latest offerings in technology and design. The Provision class is a sqaudron support class vessel that accompanies a fleet as a logistics support vechicle. While the Einsatz class is a forward deployment ship with two platoons of Hub Fedration or Cammando marines along with equipment, vechicles, etcs that can be deployed at a moment's notice.  This is an adventurer's vessel though make no mistake about that.

The Contessa class Fast Trader  fufills these roles and more because in this book's fifty three pages we get the complete history, roles, variants, and solid plans or diagrams of these vessels. This is a well written supplement with Michael Johnson getting into the meat of this vessel. The layout, fonts, artwork and more in this book are very well done. They fit the temper and rigor of the Clement sector. The Contessa class Fast Trader  is a vessel that fills a number of roles within the Clement sector and the frontier. The adventurers may not want to encounter those vessels however! They have teeth and can destroy even an experienced set of Clement sector spacers..  I really like the artwork that Ian Stead (Cover ,p.2,4,13-16,26,27,38-40); Michael Johnson (p.9,12,19-24,30-35,44-49);&  Bradley Warnes (p.11,38) brings to the table with the Contessa.

The Contessa Class  Fast Trader is a bold and dangerous trade vessel that can open up lots of opportunity for experienced spacers. This is a vessel that will take adventurers into a whole other level of trade and spacer style company trade houses. And this is because the vessel is a whole cloth starcraft that will work hard for the party. This is one of the roles that this vessel fills in spades. Get the  Contessa class Fast Trader  if your looking for a hard working and
