Saviors Of The Ninth Moon For Stars Without Numbers & Your Old School Space Opera

Saviors9thMoon
More Information Right Over HERE

History

The Saviors Of The Ninth Moon are a group of galactic trouble shooters and mercenaries who are all that remains of  The Ninth Moon Legion. There were over a billion of these cloned warriors who invaded the Sirius Clovus Major star systems, only a million survivors fought their way out past the horrors of  The Sirius Engagement . The Legion was disgraced, dishonored, and disbanded or so the Old Galactic Empire believed.
The reality was far different. The Legion was a political scapegoat that was used as convenient excuse to hang the losses of Sirius. The Empire saved face among its interstellar political allies and ridding itself of the troublesome Legion. Or so it thought.
Thirty years after the events of Siruis, the survivors of The Ninth Moon Legion formed a dedicated rag tag group of soldiers who sell their skills to the highest bidder.
The Ninth became the stuff of legends after saving the governor the ninth moon of Sirius, the very man who condemned him to the
the Old Galactic Empire.
Today the yellow and red uniforms of the Saviors Of The Ninth Moon, are seen among the trouble spots and hot zones of far flung frontiers of the space
ways.

Tactics, Equipment, And Methods

The Saviors Of The Ninth Moon use a wide variety of equipment and tactics salvaged and built upon by their days serving the Old Galactic Empire. They often use a mix of tech three and four favoring close fitting Armored under suits and Combat field uniforms with stealth and camouflage abilities so that the colours of the Ninth moon can be displayed at a moment's notice.
The Ninth often use hit and run tactics as well as small black OPs techniques that they've excelled at over the years away from the Old Galactic Empire. They often use turncoat agents who go deep under cover to infiltrate exo cults, weird religions and tense galactic hot spots

They're shields are able to deflect an array of energy weapons and they are made with tech three or four materials as available. The Ninth favors chain saws, mono gladius short swords, and mono monomolecular  knives.
The Ninth also favor a strange type of green blue laser pistol as a standard issue weapon. All soldiers are expected to know and be able to manufacture items from local materials if possible for deep cover operations.
They count at least three minor psychic mystery cults among their ranks who joined them after several attempts by the Old Galactic Empire to exterminate them.

The Saviors of the Ninth Moon work through a series of double blind cells and merchants who sell their serves to the highest bidders and work for the betterment of the mercenaries. The Saviors still have many admirers among the Old Galactic Empire who owe them a long series of running favors. Their ultimate goal is mysteries and ultimately unknown at this point but they do have agents combing the fringes of the galactic frontier searching for level three and four technology. But their ultimate aims remain shrouded in the fog of warfare and blood.

Ten Ancient Wisdom And Secret Sects For Your Old School Space Opera

File:Skullfront.png
  1. The Argotur -  A brotherhood of intergalactic adventurers and thieves who oppose the rich and elite. This group has ties to every major human and post human world. They pay 40% mark up on certain alien artifacts and have ties to the most powerful of banking cartels. There have been charges of demonic/forbidden god worshiping. The charges are only rumors. They may help certain PCs out or act as patrons but will only accept those of tenth level or higher into their ranks
  2. Bangorg or Preservers of The Devine Geometer - This secet is interested in maintaining the universal balance of good or evil. They help both sides and cause more chaos then anything else. The Bangorg are identified by their signet rings. They act on both sides of the law and deal with evil on their terms. A very mysterious group of adventurers and spacers if there ever was one.
  3. Etuli- The Three Philosphers  - This group encourages intellectual growth wherever it needs to nurtured. They create apprentices  overseers, and elders of the ages. The sect works from within governments to create and further its own agenda. No one is quite sure what type of "intellectual growth" that it might be creating. They have been a patron to adventurers for centuries
  4. Gororngi- "The Tree of the Illuminated" - This sect creates and nurtures colonies across the cosmos enabling its colonists to dream of a better tomorrow. Those dreams are recorded on "psy holographic interface" and sold for thousands of credits. The colonists are slowly trained in the ways of the psychic should they show the temperament and sent out into the cosmos. They nurture the "Tree of Knowledge among mankind and post mankind.
  5. Kobanarona- The Pruners - This sect deals with the roots of evil found among the "Tree of Life" . Its members are all adventurers who have tired of not having a cause to believe in and travel the stars setting things right again. The "pruners" are also a traveler's society helping travelers and pilgrims among the stars. They have a banking system and guild second to none among the stars.
  6. Uglath- An order of worshipers of stars who have mutated themselves with rare herbs which react to stellar energy. These mutants are able to heal, create energy, and are considered by many to be demigods. There have been several scandels associated with this sect. They support certain groups of adventurers who further there agenda.
  7. Uingbeturill- "The Heads of Fertility" -This sect spreads life giving nanites to its members in order to help "heal" the cosmos of the imperfects of non-life. Killing one of its members has been known to spread the "Uingbeturill" a cloud of nanite death across the face of a planet.  These sect is both reviled and held in esteem by certain galactic forces. They hire adventurers to help them find certain types of alien artifacts.
  8. Unangw - The Fallen Chemists - These monsters travel the galactic space ways spreading plagues, mutation, and horror in their wake in order to advance mankind along a path of glorious destruction and final evolutionary perfection. They kill millions in order achieve their goal. They have the "death and disembody" mark within seventy worlds.
  9. Vaurith - The Wanderlust - A travelers society that will help anyone they find with food, water, and all the essentials as long as the "saved" swears to give up procreation in all its forms and gives in to genetic castration on the mocular level.  Found in every galactic shelter they can find. They hand out pamphlets and holograms.
  10. Welrorntha- "Those who Worship The Serpent"  A group of like minded adventurers who roam the universe creating a path of supreme power wherever they go. They are the patrons of civilization  and power. This group has been known to help smaller groups in need with patronage and knowledge. Their price is eternal promises of power and membership. This sect has been involved in several galactic upheavals and scandals  They pay very well for certain alien artifacts however. They have also been the money behind several failed expeditions into the outer voids.

The Church of Central Intelligence- A Religious Organization For Your Old School Post Apocalypse Rpg

The Church of Central Intelligence

This strange cryptic religion has spread among many people in the post apocalyptic landscape to replace many conventional organized religions. This electronic based religion was brought by the "Eloi Movement"from the outer world colonies. It centers around the use of the "i Church"  module. This module creates a series of states of well being with in the user. They work as a charm spell creating a sense of brotherhood & well being. This state restores 1d3 hit points of damage per session. It gives the user a limited form of esp as per the spell.
There are those who think that this state is a gate way into a cult passing itself off as an official religion. The church sells the "i-church" module as both a cybernetic implant & mobile device. The device can be used separately from the services of the Eloi temples. They induce states of deep relaxation, concentration, & in most cases altered states of consciousness.
Eloi clerics of the church will often carry an Alpha Church module with them. These allow the cleric to reach deep zones of inner peace as part of the path to gathering their spells.
The central dogma of the church involves the use of the sacrament of "Superior Evolution". A cleric of the 6th level or better obtains the mental mutation "Evolve Form" - This mental mutation advances the target allow certain genetic genetic traits while retarding or removing others. On each round after a successful mental attack the target will have one genetic mutation added. This attack may only be attempted once per encounter either or not it succeeds. It may not be used again for another week. There will only be one priest present per temple. Repeated treatments are used.
In this case the priest will add the traits that Eloi value most. They are described as being smaller than modern humans, having shoulder-length curly hair, chins that ran to a point, large eyes, small ears, and small mouths with bright red thin lips. They are of sub-human intelligence, though apparently intelligent enough to speak, and they have a primitive language.
Eloi that are created in this manner use the following traits from Mutant Future -

Eloi

Hit Dice: 1d4 per point of CON.
Mutations: Atrophied Cerebellum, Bizarre Appearance (nymph-like features), Weak Will.
This is a weak PC, so a player would have to play carefully or treat as a challenge.

Eloi Hunter

(as Pure Humans, plus Bizarre Appearance mutation)
This race could be a good way to introduce new players to Mutant Future.
Further information on these type of Eloi can be found Here
There is absolutely no truth that the Church of Central Intelligence has sold those who have penetrated the inner mysteries of this religion into slavery & less then savory things off world. Many who have observed the goals of this religion state that those of the Eloi are technically adept but don't understand  technology; they regress and unlearn millennia of culture, thought and reason, until they are satisfied with the pleasure of merely existing. That these beings are merely the creations of those in charge to govern, rule, & for far more sinister reasons. There are those among the priests of the Central Intelligence who warn of the vanity of those of the Outer Colonies. That they are accessing powers & rites that are forbidden. They speak of the Morlock incident to those of the inner circles of the Central council.
The Church of the Central Intelligence has had a cold war going with members of The Temple of
the "Earth Current". The temple calls the Church of Central Intelligence bizarre, inhuman, decadent, a menace to all right thinking humans, & that they have congress with demons from beyond the pale. There have been temple burnings in New York, Long Island, & Connecticut.

The "i-church"*  modules sell for 130. gold pieces each. The implants sell for over 200.00 & need a qualified cleric to implant them.

* Not responsible for side effects from "i-church" modules including loss of sanity, spell casting abilities, mental mutations or any psychic possession that may result from continued use after 1d6 months. Please consult a qualified wizard if you experience any of the above side effects

The House of Fenwick's Purveyors of Fine Artifacts & Forbidden Objects

File:El Cerrito, San Miguel County, New Mexico. A complete farm unit - a storage shed with a tight roof, . . . - NARA - 521159.tif
Half way between several Heavens, an alternatively modern  Hell or two, & around the corner from a deserted Limbo is The House of Fenwicks. Fenwick's are the purveyors of fine artifacts, antiques, & forbidden objects. Operating since the beginning of time or the 12th century of yesteryear, Fenwicks are the very best at acquiring, gathering, & selling artifacts of an arcane nature. These incredible merchants reside on a mini plane ready to do business at the drop a hat.
File:Antiques village.jpg

They employ only the very best adventurers, scientists, merchants, & traders to act as their agents. They move throughout the planes buying, selling, stealing, & setting up shop so that others might have the tools of the adventuring trade they need.
File:Self storage units.jpg
Fenwick's has a unique set of mini planar storage units that house thousands of units in a single dimension. These millions of units are put into operation once a god, devil, lich, or other threat is taken down. They are the ones to call to move in & take possession of the loot.

Random Evalution table 1d10
  1. I'm so sorry but the market will not bare this artifact its simply out of fashion right now 40% mark down from the value.
  2. Fantastic we are looking for those 15% up sell from market value.
  3. Those are dangerous & unstable we can't use those.
  4. That item is exactly the sort of thing I've got a client for I'll give you 400 gold pieces for it.
  5. The cost of doing business has gone up. We'll give you 10% less for that.
  6. This is a fake, I'll not pay a penny over 100 gold pieces
  7. This isn't a real one, & besides its only has 3 charges left
  8. Are you sure that you want to sell that? I can get you a good price at 10% of the list
  9. That's a real one for sure 20% of market value
  10. The god, demon is sure to come after you. Here's 50 gold pieces & we'll take care of your funeral arrangement
File:Antiques.JPG
Fenwick's moves through out the planes & yet who or what runs the organization is a mystery. There are those who have broken into their dimensional ware houses only to be found buried under the pop cultural debris of a thousand worlds. They've been drained dry & their eye sockets empty!
There is a 40% that they may have a given item & that they are willing to sell it! More often then not favors & errands are expected for items instead. These favors can be called in weeks, months, even years later!

A random encounter listing for objects in Fenwicks 1d10

  3. Prism of  A God's Light - This piece of glass shows things & objects as they really are. Illusions & the like are disbelieved with a +1 on all rolls but it really does show how things are fascinating really. A successful saving throw might make you look away but why not another peak?
  4. Statue of Bast - This statue animates at night & will act as a pet & companion but wants to be fed a spell every night. The cat must report to the goddess but what does in report?

Hamithandulo- God of Spacers, Pirates & Hyperspace

File:Gate of Teki Mandir, Gwalior Fort.jpg
A shrine to Hamithandulo- God of  Spacers, Pirates & Hyperspace in the capital  of the Human Empire on Earth

Alignment -Chaotic
This god is known as the spacer's god. Ancient god brought to the humans on the winds of space. Hamithandulo is a terrible god who tempts spacers with the illicit life of a pirate & whose haunted chants can be heard in many a hull of a space craft. Blood & the lightning of the stars are his symbols.
The sound of an airlock clinking into place before a boarding action calls to him, weapons locking into place are his fingers tapping on his throne, & the lamentations of  husbands & wives have been lost to the void of space are his laughter.
This is a double sided god for his is also the hand that moves across the charts of spacers & guides them in the void. His are the super science that shows the quick mind the folds of space.
In many space stations, cantinas, pirate dens is a small shrine & the officials themselves of the Human Empire even offer their own small prayers to this home spun god!
The vengeance of this god is terrible indeed. The victim of a curse is at first struck by little bits of bad luck as things go wrong. Air hoses develop cracks, space suits & leathers have pieces in odd places developing flaws. If the spacer doesn't redress his taboo with this god then the final vengeance is the burning, boiling, & baking of space itself visited on the victim. This is done in a most public place!
The book of Hamithandulo is often seen right next to the most common charts of space. For it contains routes sacred to the god where the faithful make pilgrimages to his most holy stars. He asks for but a single piece of a treasure from each hail done in his name. If this is granted then his favor may include getting a crew lost with rare opportunities for ill gotten gain. Such are his blessings & how he tests star ship captains in his service.

Retrospective For The Second Stringers - The Galaxy Trio

Much of the cartoons back in the 80s were reruns of classic 60s cartoons dressed up & repacked for cable. Among those was this guy. Bird Man & The Galaxy Trio. Lets forget about Birdman for a moment & concentrate on the Trio. The Trio were the perfect example of a small plot that a dungeon master could use for a space going campaign.. Hear me out here. Seriously this is a great concept for three reasons.
  1. They've got a space ship which means cross over without tears. Need some npcs to pull out  the pc's bacon from the fire. Their right there. Space ships allow the dungeon master infinite opportunities. Hell Star Frontiers didn't even have space ship rules until the advanced game.
The transporter ermm Displacer allows the party to save on costs without tears. The displacer is perfect for allowing the dungeon master to have say over its potential. Don't want it go through solid rock or lead. Then it can't.
  2. Super Heroes INnnnn Sppaacce. Each of the trio were super heroes whose powers worked very well together. Super Heroes in space are always golden look at Space Ghost but that's another blog entry. The powers of the trio were always second stringers, these were the guys who cleaned up the lesser interstellar criminals.
  3. Greater background - These folks were interstellar law enforcement they had the Chief: A man referred to only as "Chief" is a recurring character in Galaxy Trio. He fulfills a similar role to that of Falcon 7 in Birdman. Whose the chief in a game like this? Well you are Mr, Dungeon Master. Need information conveyed quickly, easily, & without tears here's your puppet to do it with.

The plot & background of the Trio :

Galaxy Trio

The Galaxy Trio is a group of three extraterrestrial superheroes, Vapor Man, Meteor Man, and Gravity Girl, who patrol space in their cruiserCondor One maintaining order and fighting evildoers in the name of the Galactic Patrol law enforcement agency. The ship was equipped with a "displacer" very similar to the transporter device on Star Trek,[citation needed] which was a contemporary show.
  • Vapor Man (voiced by Don Messick) - He has the ability to transform part or all of his body into gaseous form (a power shared by at least some residents of his home planet of Vaporus), enabling him to fly, escape from physical bonds, and squeeze through very small spaces, as well as producing various forms of "vapor" (such as "freeze vapor") from his hands.
  • Meteor Man (voiced by Ted Cassidy) - A native of the planet Meteorus. Meteor Man is distinguished by his ability to increase or decrease the size of any part of his body. He gains superhuman strength in any limb that he chooses to enlarge.
  • Gravity Girl (voiced by Virginia Eiler) - She has the ability to bend the laws of gravity to her will, allowing her to fly and lift very heavy objects with her mind. The daughter of the king of the planet Gravitas, she left her luxurious home and life of privilege at an early age to fight crime with the Galactic Patrol and was subsequently assigned to the Galaxy Trio team, with whom she has served ever since.

[edit]Minor characters

  • Chief: A man referred to only as "Chief" is a recurring character in Galaxy Trio. He fulfills a similar role to that of Falcon 7 in Birdman.

Updating The Galaxy Trio For The OSR

The trio's concept for the OSR is one of the most easily accomplished!

Its not enough to say that these types of characters were born on planet XYZ & this is why they have special powers! With a game like Human Space Empires its easy to imagine them being bio clones. Human beings adapted to conditions found on various planets instead.
Yeah I know that this was used in the Buck Rogers Rpg but hey its older then that!

Both James Blish & Fredrick Pohl have done series to reflect man adapted for space & planetary conditions. For the cool powers however Human Space Empires, Marvel Super Heroes, or Stars Without Numbers has everything you need to run this type of a campaign.
If you'd really want an odd campaign then adapt something like Fredick Pohl's Man Plus where mankind is adapting himself to the stars Here
Personally retro is the way to go with only having to increase the power levels for something like Human Space or Stars Without Number

The Holographic & VR Phantasmagoria : Its only an illusion

File:Scène de fantasmagorie XVIIIe siècle.jpg

They travel the universe bring with them images so real that some think they are! They're right also among the hustlers,  grifters, & conmen that rule these shows are the true artists. Planar men of vision & knowledge  from every intergalactic civilization who use ancient alien devices to create these illusions. Yet there are those who use their knowledge to create planar gates for entities from beyond!
In fact, many of the phantasmagoria showmen are a combination of scientists and magicians, many of them stressing that the effects that they produced, no matter how eerily convincing, were in fact the result of ingenious equipment and no small measure of skill, rather than any supernatural explanation.
There are societies of these scientists who teach the skills & craft to bring these images & illusions to life. To quote one of them:
I am only satisfied if my spectators, shivering and shuddering, raise their hands or cover their eyes out of fear of ghosts and devils dashing towards them.

Many of these brotherhoods of scientists & astronauts use a combination of holographic projection, super science powers, & strange spells at sites of supernatural occurrances  The problem being that often these proceedings call up the very entities they are thought to be depicting. The brethren often have to put down the very entities that they create.
To heighten the effect of these shows special effects in the form of strange gas & weird lightening effects are often used & in more then one instance has caused them to have riots & stampedes of the audiences who to entertain.
File:MaraAssault.jpg

The Brethren of the Phantasmagoria have begun to classify & use methods for safe entertainment of many civilized folk of the Human Empire. Others from the fringe have criticized  the entire movement of one of dullness & routine.
These traveling entertainers & projectionists liken themselves to the
Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol
They are the complete opposite & many of the masses see them as the true artists. There have been incidents of both real & simulated blood shed between the too.Often live actors are used to create both a play & a spectacle at the same time to add to the reality of the production!
File:Grand Guignol poster.jpg

Many times the projectionists will canvas the Outer & Fringe worlds for primitive illusionists & the like for those who use the purer forms of the art. Those recruited can expect to earn their passage though. Often many of these groups travel between worlds to see newer creatures & monsters  to capture their images for their jaded audiences!  Life & limb are indeed sometimes in danger during these ventures!

Those who are caught by the illusions of the projectionists are -1 for all illusions & might even be harmed. See the illusionist class of your favorite retro clone for more details !
