Quick Review Of The Expanse TV Series Episode One & Some Old School Science Fiction Campaign Thoughts

I have to say that the Expanse was surprisingly good and offered a look into a nicely done solar system colony show that actually had a few surprises in store for this jaded sci fi fan. The show has been on my radar for over a week or two solid and tonight I got a chance to really dive into the show.

According to Wiki; The Expanse is an American space opera / mystery science fiction drama television series on Syfy, based on the series of novels by James S. A. Corey. Set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System, it follows police detective Miller (Thomas Jane), ship's officer Jim Holden (Steven Strait), and his crew as they unravel a conspiracy that threatens peace across the System and the survival of humanity.
The acting wasn't bad at all, the set up for the television premiere has been playing on Youtube for a week or so. The thing I really liked was the limits on the science fiction technological aspects of the show.

The action was pretty well done and the show didn't talk down to its audience at all, the plot is sort of like the old TSR Buck Rogers in the Twenty Fifth Century rpg minus the funky gene spliced colony races. Instead we get a four way cold war between the Belters, an independent Mars, A UN controlled Earth, and a wide inter system conspiracy.
The break down of the plot isn't bad from Wiki and paints the series in a series of quick swaths but gets the job done;"Two hundred years in the future, in a fully colonized Solar System, police detective Miller, born in the asteroid belt, is given the assignment to find a missing young woman, Julie Mao. Joining his task is James Holden, formerly first officer of an ice freighter who is involved in an incident caused by the tense relationship between Earth, Mars and the Belt. Far from their struggles in space, Chrisjen Avasarala, a United Nations executive, works to prevent war between Earth and Mars. Soon the three find out that the missing woman is connected to a vast conspiracy that threatens all humanity."   Tonight's premiere basically gives the set up for the rest of the series plus some bits & pieces to the back drop of the internal relations between the various factions in the show.

In many respects this show reminded me of Babylon Five or the newer Battle Star Galactica but not as grim. The show wasn't afraid to chew on its own science fiction roots while nodding to some of the newer science fiction bits of more recent shows. Can I see rooting around and using this show as fodder for a science fiction table top rpg campaign? You bet I can! In fact I can totally see this show being used as fodder for a Stars Without Number style game. The science fiction is built for exactly the sort of a game either Stars Without Numbers was made for or even Star Frontiers. The ships are wonderfully put together, the characters are evocative of just this sort of a gaming campaign. Many of the space crafts, situations, and characters look like they walked right off the set of central casting from just these types of games. The incursion of magnetic boots, lack of gravity and other little touches were very nice to see. This type of campaign reminded me of X plorers and Hulks & Horrors. Both retro clone engines could easily handle the details of an Expanse style of old school campaign.

Tonight's show made a nice contrast to the full blow Star Wars hoopla that's been going non stop for three solid weeks non stop. I'm a star wars fanatic and even I'm getting a bit overwhelmed lately. So The Expanse gave my brain a much needed space boast in a completely different direction. I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the Expanse tonight with friends!

Marvel's Dare Devil Television Show On Showtime Trailer And Commentary

Well, well, it actually looks like they've given the Dark Devil property to some folks who know what and how to do the Neo Noir aspect of the character up in a big way. This does bode well in my book if the trailer lives up to the potential of the show. Fingers crossed

Dare Devil has a storied and interesting history behind the scenes as well, according to wiki:

Daredevil is a fictional character, a superhero that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett, with an unspecified amount of input from Jack Kirby,[1] and first appeared in Daredevil #1 (April 1964).
While Daredevil had been home to the work of comic-book artists such as Everett, Kirby, Wally WoodJohn Romita, Sr., and Gene Colan, among others, Frank Miller's influential tenure on the title in the early 1980s cemented the character as a popular and influential part of the Marvel Universe. Daredevil has since appeared in many various forms of media including several animated series, video games and merchandise, and the 2003 feature-length filmDaredevil, where he was portrayed by Ben AffleckCharlie Cox will play Daredevil in Marvel's upcoming Daredevillive-action television series set to premier April 2015.

A ton more on this character over HERE
Is this going to be the definitive take on the classic comic book Marvel character or another flash in the pan series? Only time will tell with this one. There's a ton going on in this trailer including the inclusion right out the gate of the Kingpin. So the series already stacking and hedging its bet. So we here at Sword and Stitchery will watch and wait. It sure is going to be an interesting ride that's for sure down in Hell's Kitchen.

Dark Reaches - 'Into The Back of Beyond' Hartford Beta Max Black Edition Stars Without Numbers Actual Play Mission Part III

After dealing with Mi Go, and having their ship jump light years to a ruined & very primitive Earth. The PC's arrived in a world locked in a cycle of savagery and super science. They found the origin point of the time space gate was centered above some ancient insulation. There were signs and heat signatures that within the last seventy two hours there had been incredible activity at this location in the wastelands.
Details to the last game right over HERE

File:Wonder of the Painted-Desert.jpg

The party sent in probes from their ship into the area to investigate, catalog, and perhaps find out what the hell was going on. They managed to locate the vault doors to the military complex.
After a series of harrowing rolls to bypass the controls, the party managed to open the facility door. The interior of the place opened a second 'false front' and the party found themselves in a weird military style hanger filled with strange aircraft and huge stacks of alien and relic technology.
There was massive evidence of a series of melees and dust ups here.

Fully armed the party moved in and saw loaders a ton of shell casings as well as carbon scoring on the boxes and artifacts. They found that one level of of the facility had been flooded with deadly radiation but they found a secret passage that lead to a hidden hallway.

File:Flickr - Official U.S. Navy Imagery - Shell casings from a .50 caliber machine gun collect on the deck..jpg

Power was running, lights were on, and the facility had been powered from some external power source. There was more evidence of combat and plenty of shell casings on the floor. The party heard noises above them and encountered four mutant Suit Chewers.
The mutant monsters dropped from the ceiling onto the party attracted by the party's probes and maintenance bots that followed in the wake of the party, it took the party a long time to deal with them.

Chrysochroa sp..jpg
The party made it past the suit chewers and into a deeper part of the underground base. Here more sights of a struggle and some sort of staging area.
There was very little resistance here at all. The party was a bit spooked as they were expecting mutant monsters round every corner. A few more mutant roaches and some skeletons were all that was found.

More mazes of underground tunnels and a van greeted the party cautiously they checked out everything and other then a mutant roach encounter everything seemed rather oddly quiet.
Cautiously the PC's made their way down the halls finally coming into a massive warehouse space.

Stacked floor to ceiling with shipping containers and baring old Earth military markings. These containers contained ancient relics, alien artifacts, and at the center of the room the final 'treasure'.
Photo by Danny Cornelissen - http://www.portpictures.nl
The final prize stood in the center of the massive warehouse space. The Moondial which had created the first time space gate activated by the other party of adventurers in the Thundarr game last week. The dungeon was free of monsters because it had been cleaned out by the other players last week. There were all kinds of dangerous relics and artifacts lying around and not to mention the Moondial. So after some lengthy discussion the party of SWN adventurers decided to take the treasure and shut down the moon dial. The time space gate artifact was too dangerous to fall into the hands of a group of primitives such as the Thundarr party. There will be massive repercussions for this especially after the SWN party closed down the gate! Thus limiting the options of the other adventures after dealing with the base's primitive A.I. system. The other party of adventurers will be returning to the vault and expecting their treasure and artifacts to be present only to have it stolen out from under them by some technological terrorist upstarts.
To be continued next week...

The Great Martian War Television Mini Series For Your Old School Campaign

If you've been on Facebook or Twitter, Reddit, etc. This footage has been floating around the internet of the Great Martian War. Some fantastic footage of Martian war machines in a special for the History Channel. According to the History channel website of the upcoming series :
On its 100th anniversary, The Great Martian War tells the story of the catastrophic events and unimaginable horrors of 1913-17, when Humankind was pitted against a savage Alien invasion.

The mini series is actually supported right over HERE
With powerful and detailed First World War parallels, The Great Martian War fuses sci-fi fantasy with specialist factual history to explore the real-world tragedies and unique horror of World War One.

Needless to say that this is some fantastic stuff to inspire an Old School campaign right from the get go. We're given a timeline, Martian forces, background, complete battlefronts, etc. all done in the style of an alternative history from the front. Pretty much everything you could want as a set up including troop types.
This is a four year war with some very nasty bits thrown in here and there parelling HG Well's fears which were well founded of the growing threat of WWI.
According to the producers the look of the special had some very definitive influences and were driven by some solid desires to capture a homage to HG Well's War of the Worlds but with their own spin on the themes and ideals set down in the Wells story :

What better way to frame a convincing allegory about WWI than to build it within a story world and against an enemy that would have been familiar to the men and women who fought the 14-18 war? War of the Worlds was a famous story to the WWI generation and how else would the people of 1913 have sought to label an Alien Invasion than to have pointed the finger of suspicion at the mysterious Red Planet.
This desire to create a war between worlds that feels like one the people of 1913 would have recognized extends to the look of the film and fake archive. Our Alien machines and the Alien technologies that are thrown against mankind in our documentary are heavy, steam shrouded, earth bound, mechanistic and grinding, just like the huge industrial weapons of WWI. It was important that the look of those Alien machines echoed contemporary Edwardian visions of what an Alien invasion would look like, anything else would have sat very unconvincingly among the archive of WWI.
Rather than approaching our sci-fi elements from the perspective of the here-and-now, it felt right to take inspiration from the great writers of the period, the true pioneers of the genre like H.G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs and, a little later, H.P. Lovecraft. Their perception of life beyond planet Earth and extra-terrestrial visitations from outer space was our jump-off point, and the Red Planet is of course an iconic part of that. Of course, whether the Aliens did in fact originate from Mars, or were mistakenly christened Martians by the people of 1913 eager to give a name to the enemy, is one of the things we find out in the film.
Needless to say I'm a bit excited to see the finished product. And then set down a review of it. The online support for the project is impressive and reminds me of some of the production values for a video game property rather then a History channel mini series. Here for example is a break down of some of the Martian forces which look damn impressive to me. This seems to really capture the spirit of the above comments by the producers and keep the material constant through out what they've set down in the production:

There are three types of Martian machine, each of which is given a name by the Allied soldiers at the Martian Front:
Herons
These are the largest of the three. They are up to 300 ft high, slow moving but in the early stages of the war, invulnerable to human weapons. They are armed with an energy shield, a devastating energy cannon, and surrounded by clouds of poisonous gasses that mirror the atmosphere of their pilots’ home world. What is inside each Heron is unknown at first, but it’s clear that they can lay waste to the great cities of Europe in a matter of days, and also that they act as the hub for battalions of smaller tripod war-machines, that the troops have christened 'Spiders'.

Heron great martian war

Spiders
These are the fast moving attack dogs of the Martian Invasion. 20ft high they wield a tentacle like weapon and are merciless close-quarters killing machines. The 'Spiders' appear to be acting under the command of their Heron masters, but as our story unfolds a number of key events point to a very different dynamic.  For contained within the Spider machines is an important secret that will prove pivotal to the course of the war and the future path humanity takes.

Spider great martian war

Lice
These are the third type of machine, and they quickly spread a deep, penetrating terror among the men on the Martian Front. Moving only at night and in vast warming herds, these small, ground-hugging crawlers appear to be harvesting the countless dead bodies left out on the battlefield at the end of each day’s fighting. Like the Spiders, the Lice are absolutely pivotal to the entire Alien strategy - but the exact purpose of their nightly harvest out on No Man’s Land is a gnawing mystery whose eventual unravelling will have devastating effects on the common soldier and expose terrible flaws in the Allied Generals’ leadership.

lice great martian war
As the mini series delves deeper into the backdrop of the Great Martian War there are mysteries within mysteries.
We find strange and weird super science powering the Martian war machines, odd metals with dangerous properties -
As well as the three types of Alien machines, the Allies also encounter a mysterious substance, which they name ‘Victisite’. It’s a highly responsive liquid metal that powers all the Alien machines and weapons. When the Allies take possession of this alluring, seemingly intuitive wonder-material they quickly realise it could turn the tide of war in their favour and place Victisite at the heart of their own burgeoning fleet of war-machines… without stopping to consider just how different a ‘breed’ of metal Victicite might be, compared to anything ever encountered on Earth.

There are weird twisted differences from HG Well's book and such as Germany asking for help against the Martians rather then their position in WWI. Wiped out to a man this marks one of many alternative history points seen through out the mini series.
This is a really well done example of alternative pseudo history given form.

These parallels lie right at the heart of the show and there are far too many in number to mention them all but it was very important to us that every single element of our fiction, whether major incident or minor detail, should be borne out of the real events of World War One i.e. The United States, unaffected by an Alien landing in the heart of Europe, remains neutral for much of the war, men volunteer in their thousands to serve at the Martian Front, women throw themselves into the construction of munitions… We have parallels to the Christmas truce and the Angel of Mons, the sinking of the Lusitania and the bloody battles of the Somme and Verdun, and have a twisted version of the Spanish Flu feature at the climax of the global conflict.
Throughout we try to ground our outcomes to these major events in the Martian War in the true history of WWI.

So every moment of our war, from the Aliens’ arrival in 1913 to the war’s shocking conclusion in 1917, has a real-world 1914-18 parallel. And it’s also true of our story’s themes: the nature of the Alien enemy, the terrible strategy they use against us, the reasons they came to Earth in the first place, and the threat that their invasion still poses 100 years later. All these things grew out of what we felt were central truths about the nature of WWI.

Right so using 'The Mars The Great War' mini series as part of your old school campaigns really isn't that hard at all. There are several games on the market currently that will allow you to place your PC's right into the action.

All Quiet On The Martian Front is a perfect 15 mm game that has some fantastic mini's with just the right sort of flavor for this genre.
Find out more on All Quiet On The Martian Front HERE

The PC's in this sort of campaign would be adventurers and mercenaries mostly likely in the employ the Allies as things become quite desperate an the Martians kick the crap out of Earth's forces on almost all fronts. Dungeons here might well be anything from the abandon cities of Europe to some weird alien war machine base or some strange ruins with vast Martian secrets waiting to be discovered.
There's really a ton that can be mined from this mini series and I personally enjoyed the hell out of the mini series.

The wastelands and no man's land of Mars The Great War would be a truly terrifying place for PC's to be adventuring in. A real fight for survival against the spiders and lice through the battle fields of Europe. There is plenty of room here to use another Well's creation here to get even more milage out of this. By pairing The Great Martian War up with the Time Machine you can get a mash up time traveling campaign where the PC's find themselves right in the middle of an alternative Martian history where the world is brought right to its knees and the PC's are there at this pivotal moment in history.
All in All I think that The Great Martian War is a decent homage with some really cool ideas to mine for your old school campaign.

1d10 UFO Random Unexpected Finds Table For Your Old School Post Apocalyptic Campaigns

Even as the winds blow across the post apocalyptic wastelands, there are strange and unexpected visitors to the shores of small planet. Some of these are aliens from other worlds and still others are from beyond the bounds of small Earth. Here are a selection of strange and weird artifacts left behind after the lights from the Wastes have faded.

Every three minutes the piece of weird debris like material pulses and releases a pulse of unknown energy. This energy can heal for 1d4 points of damage or mutate any three hit point life form. There is a sonic key that can control the effect but only a super science device will allow it to be found.
  2. 5. A weird three centimeter long machine with multiple toggle switches across its surface. This device has several modes but will do 1d8 points of damage to victim with a radioactive ray of incredible scope that has a 20 meter range. Any tampering with this device will cause it to spew 1d10 points of damage to anything or anyone within line of effect. There are the remains of several weird metallic like branches at the top of the cup part of the device. It has what seems like unlimited charges. But in fact has 1d30 charges when found.
  7. A strange beautiful kaleidoscope like fabric device that has in fact the same effect as green slime when spread across organic flesh and material. The fabric will cover a six meter area and break down over 80 kilograms of material per 1d6 rounds. Garbage, refuse, branches, etc. is broken down on a molecular level and reduced to carbon powder. The thing makes a purring sound as it goes about its work.
  8. An ancient barrel chested robotic horror left behind because of a broken wire. This thing will snap to life if its fixed with a wisdom or technology roll. The thing still has alien programming will carry out a weird programmed agenda. It will gather junk, bits of plastic and more fashioning a transmitter with any radio it can get a hold of to transmit to its master. The robotiod is the equivalent of a light engineering or technician robot. It may 20% chance to convert any other robot nearby into another model like itself. Both will continue their programming and send for their masters.
  9. A small silver black cube that actually contains an ancient and powerful alien wizard whose goal is build an android body to continue its reign of terror on Earth from which it was exiled centuries before.
