OSR Sword & Sorcery Random Encounters - d100 Wilderness Random Encounter Table tailored specifically for a Sword & Sorcery campaign using Castles & Crusades.

Here is a d100 Wilderness Random Encounter Table tailored specifically for a Sword & Sorcery campaign using Castles & Crusades. This blog post picks right up from

OSR Sword & Sorcery Adventure Fodder - d100 Treasure Table tailored for the Tower of the Serpent Horde, fully compatible with Castles & Crusades (and most classic OSR systems)

In true Sword & Sorcery fashion, the world is ancient, dangerous, and uncaring. Magic is rare, subtle, or corrupting; civilizations are decadent or crumbling; and the wild is filled with desperate humans, forgotten abominations, and ruins best left undisturbed.

How to Run These Encounters in Castles & Crusades

  1. Siege Engine Checks: Use the Challenge Level (CL) noted above added to the base Challenge Class (CC 12 or 18) depending on whether the affected Attribute is a Prime for the character.

  2. Atmosphere First: Sword & Sorcery thrives on tension. Describe the environment—the reek of decay, the unnatural silence before an ambush, or the oppressive heat—before revealing the monster or threat.

  3. Morale: Humans and beasts rarely fight to the death unless driven by madness or dark magic. Have mercenaries, bandits, and wild animals test morale when their leader falls or half their number is defeated.
