So this morning I'm zipping through G+ just before going out on a repair call, & there before me is a brand new character sheet that's been released into the wild from hairy ape arm pit of the Ape Victorious Rpg From Goblinoid Games! So let me use this retro commercial to sketch out the entire premise of the up coming table top rpg.
There are some really obvious choices that Goblinoid Games has made from the release of the character sheet. The game is going to take on the various ape races & human mutants to make them as simple and as easy as possible to use. According to the website;"Apes Victorious is a roleplaying game in which you take the role of an astronaut from the 1970's who finds himself marooned on a future Earth ruled by intelligent apes. Players may also take the role of an ape, a degenerated human, or a psi-active underdweller. Fight to survive in this post-apocalyptic future ruled by four species of apes. Or play apes who hunt humans for sport. For a different kind of campaign, play highly intelligent but insane underdwellers who have advanced technology and powerful psi powers."
I have a feeling given whose involved that your going to see an entire range of PC types from that Chimpanzees are the smart scientists/doctors of the society, Gorillas will be the military brutes, and Orangutans are the politicians/religious figures of the game and your players are going to be center stage. That stage is going to be straight into the Labryth Lord basic and Advanced, the wastelands of Mutant Future, and upon the bridge of the Stars Ships and Spacemen second edition game systems. Why? Because the game is going to have conversion tables, and notes for those in house Goblinoid Game systems.
The no art version is going to get released some time next week & I don't think that Daniel Proctor is going to do a Kickstarter at all. But there's more to it then that, this is going to open the door for all kinds of additions, add on's, and supplemental material for Apes Victorious because the game is going to be released under a creative commons license similar to Labyrinth Lord. But there's more to Apes Victorious then simply another add on system to existing OSR games. This is going to be a complete setting emulating many of the conventions, settings, and adventure locations found in a certain apetastic films. Two Twentieth Century Fox properties that immediately spring to mind are the latter film Beneath The Planet of the Apes and the 1974 Planet of the Apes television show. Both of which have marked differences between the first Planet of the Apes film. They make for a much friendlier post apocalytic setting then the first Planet of the Apes film. Indeed the later television show has the added benefit of incorporating an alternative timeline then the films themselves after the complete destruction of the Planet of the Apes film's Earth. Beneath the Planet of the Apes is an alternative timeline world then the regular films. Beneath The Planet of the Apes introduces the mutant underdwellers, the weird aspects of the Forbidden Zone, planet cracking nuclear bombs, and many other staples of post apocalyptic films.
The 1974 television series is much more friendly for campaign play and takes place ten years after the first movie. Mankind is now living on reservations & ruled over by prefects and officials, the ape council has standing orders to capture any human astronauts. Another FTL space craft crash lands and two of the three astronauts survive only to be hunted by a gorilla general. So there you have a complete setting right out of Nineteen Seventy Four. This was a much more stable world setting with lots of adventure locations including ruins, ape cities, scattered human villages, and lots of ape and human characters for use as NPC's.
Because of the nature of the Planet of The Apes Television series and the Saturday morning cartoon that followed a year later I've seen campaigns that used both properties to create very inventive adventure campaign series in old school games.
I'm really looking forward to Apes Victorious, the system sounds simple and intuitive, the ideas are perfect vechiles and additions to plug into Mutant Future or any old school post apocalptyic or science fictional game such as Star Ships & Space Men second edition.
The Apes Victorious game is going to contain a ton of useful bits and pieces to add to any of Goblinoid Games or old school rpg.
The
book is going to contain:
- A complete game
- A post-nuclear apocalyptic setting in which apes have become the dominant species
- Six player classes
- Animals and creatures of the post-nuclear future
- Campaign advice
- A complete introductory adventure
- Conversion notes for compatible games including Labyrinth Lord, Mutant Future, and Starships & Spacemen 2e
