Old School FASA Star Trek Rpg Resources For Use With Stars Without Number

"Black Fleet"

"And though I had slain a thousand foes less one,
The thousandth knife found my liver;
The thousandth enemy said to me,
'Now you shall die,
Now none shall know.'
And the fool, looking down, believed this,
Not seeing, above his shoulders, the naked stars,
Each one remembering.
"

There are times when a SWN DM needs to fill in the gaps in his games. I've been watching my buddy Bill over at Green Skeleton Gaming guild talking about  Thundercloud Galaxy  books. He's come up with some exciting stuff  you can read about it right over Here

For myself there are two possible resources I love to use repeatedly. Star Trek especially Fasa Trek is tied in my mind with everything OSR about early 70s & 80s science fiction film wise.
Why prey tell is Fasa Trek my Trek drug of choose? Because its easy to convert, very fast, & the ships make excellent dungeons in space.
The thing is that there is a metric ton of alternative Trek stuff out there. For example a good solid chunk of resources can be found over at Xon Gaming. Right over Here

The FASA Trek Canon is weird & keeps players guessing! Read the wiki entry :

FASA Trek vs. "canon" Trek

FASA designed their Star Trek game universe nearly five years before Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) (1987-1994) was first broadcast. The game's designers built their "game universe" when there was no official canon, and they borrowed heavily from ideas in the Star Trek original series, the Star Trek animated series, fan fiction, and the works of the late Star Trek novelist John M. Ford.
Game elements which either were never introduced into what later became canon Star Trek, or which differ significantly from how canon Star Trek presents them

There weird loop hole ships that appear no where else enabling a DM to insert their own "phantom ships"
For example this little beauty

Using Star Trek with SWN enables a DM to create instant brand recognition with new players! The Stars Without Numbers game allows the player to almost throw any race as PC with little muss or fuss as well

For more of these beauties visit the Morena_Shipyards

There are so many eras that you can retro fit your own time line & given the amount of fan fiction out there, plus official & unofficial stuff a  DM could loot, pillage, & still come back for more.
But how does one know what to loot or pillage?
Go right over To find all of the FASA titles & what they were.

The Triangle was the very heart of scum & villainy. A DM could learn a lot from reading through about this sector of space. This place is a magnetic with all of the major of the races of Star Trek in evidence.

The Combat Simulator was perhaps one of the best pieces of gaming design for ship to ship combat & you can find that right Here
The differences between official Trek & Fasa canon can be found summarized quite well in the wiki article Here

Finally one of the best resources for early Trek is this one! The hard work & dedication for this site is incredible!

  1. We played the heck out of the starship combat simulator. It was a great game and the ship manuals were so much fun to read and use. I think that the game still holds up well compared to games today.

Plus the production values were high. Thick cardboard stock and nice full color art for the ship pieces made the game all the more fun. I still use the ship pieces for other games today, such as Battlestations by Gorilla Games (a fantastic game in its own right).

I did not care for the game mechanics for the RPG, but the sourcebooks for it were excellent. That was frequently my feeling about FASA; good war games, great settings and sourcebooks, not so good RPG mechanics. A good mantra was get the FASA sourcebooks and use them with GURPS :)

  2. There's a lot of games today that really don't get their own due & this is certainly one of them. It does hold up.
The production values were one of the reasons why the game has remained such a cool piece of OSR gaming for so long.
Battle Stations has the look & feel of the really great old school games. It plays straight out the gate as smooth as oiled silk.
I think of the FASA Star Trek game as a Chinese menu approach to rpging. Something from column A & something from column B to create a perfect meal. The sourcebooks were where it was at for the game itself. The whole cloth didn't match the rest of the apartment for the game. Thanks for the cool & very insightful comment Tom & we've got more coming up on the Talon system. More on original stuff folks I promise!
